So this past weekend, MMAPayout* decided to rank all the MMA media websites based on criteria that they decided on. Frankly, I don't like their rankings and think they stink. Look at who they have at number one, Sherdog. Sherdog? Sherdog? Sherdog? The same Sherdog that can't get in the UFC? They're number 1? I mean, back in 2005 when MMA media was kind of weak, Sherdog was pretty good. But since PRIDE closed and they couldn't get in the UFC anymore, they've made their name covering failed promotions and Japanese organizations.
They had a chance recently to get in the UFC but messed that up. I mean, I just can't see how they can be the number one ranked site outside of the UFC. If you want to be the best, you've got to cover the best. Look at a site like MMAFighting, sure they are newer than most, but look at how they dominate the coverage. Not to mention how big a draw their videos are. That Ariel Helwani is gold on the mic. He's gotten a lot of my friends into MMA. He's good for the sport. MMAFighting may have a couple holes in their game, but they are clearly better than Sherdog.
The worst part of Sherdog are the forums. All you ever hear is "Sherdog is Article-for-Article the number one site" and "Sherdog is the best". I mean they have every reason in the world why Sherdog is number 1. If they are so good, why aren't they in the UFC covering it, the forums always cry about what Dana did and how Dana wouldn't allow them to do what they wanted to do.. The forums live off what Sherdog did YEARS ago. I mean sure they were easily the best website a few years ago, but rankings reflect the present. What has Sherdog done for me lately? Maybe if they stop hiding out in lower organizations and get into the UFC and cover it then I can rank them Number 1.
