Shane Carwin's Back Surgery Successful

Photo

For those asking @ShaneCarwin is having "Formintomy" on his C5, 6 & 7. Dr Chad Prusmack who is one of the best in the Country.

@ShaneCarwin is out of surgery and in the recovery room. No complications during surgery.

Surgery went well, it took just under 4 hours to complete. The nerve damage was worse than the MRI showed but they cleaned it up.

Due to his size he is still technically out. He was able to communicate that he has no numbness and pain. Very successful...

[UPDATE] - Shane Carwin on Shelf for 8-12 Weeks After Surgery Addresses Multiple Injuries according to MMA Fighting:
Given the 8-12 week no-contact timeframe and a traditional 6-8 week training camp, it seems likely that Carwin won't be back fighting in a UFC Octagon anytime before spring 2011. But the best news Carwin received is that his fight career should resume with no restrictions once he is fully rehabilitated.

People are overreacting. I think he did the right thing by taking care of this now, even if I’m disappointed about the fights I will miss.

by Confucius on Nov 3, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think people are worried about the fact that he turns 36 in January, a year layoff at this point in his career is a tough one. He started late so he may still have some mileage left in the tank but he’s two and a half years older than Brock and people were worried about his age too.

by who me on Nov 3, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

my opinion: this will be his last real run at the title. fighting 2 (maybe 3 in a good year) x’s a year doesn’t leave him much room for error. that’s why i think he underwent the surgery now as opposed to dealing w/the pain and foregoing the surgery. time will tell if it was a good move or not. i still think though that he’s the most legit threat to Cain’s belt

by BeeTrain on Nov 3, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Who knows he may go to 40 but a year off for an older guy just get people worrying. I think in the end this may turn out to be the best move for him, I just hope he comes back lighter and faster in the end. If he could do that he would be a killer in the division.

Get well Mr Carwin, and I for one will certainly look forward to watching you perform in the future, and maybe you can even get another crack at Lesnar along the way.

So does this mean Cain is eating a roadkill burger and drinking a Coors Light about now?

Hate to say it,

but it’s a good thing for his career that he needed surgery. Otherwise, he’d catch all kinds of hell after it was revealed that he pulled out of a high-profile fight for no particular reason.

by Andy Davis on Nov 3, 2010 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

what the hell are you talking about? his back was the reason he pulled out, the issue of having/ not having the surgery was why he was catching flack for it. Seems like it was a good idea to get the surgery, given the nerve damage being worse than they thought

by Skoobs on Nov 3, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I completely agree it's a good thing he got the surgery.

I might be wrong, but thought I remembered that he pulled out before he knew if he needed surgery and before getting an exact diagnosis. Imagine if he’d pulled out…and then found out everything was fine. As it stands, he made the right choice (obviously).

completely different

tito’s was much more invasive (fusion). Carwin’s surgery is more likened to an arthroscopic surgery (obviously more dangerous being on the spine). A fusion puts you out of commission (no training/fighting) for 9-12 months, if you’re even able to fight/train again. Carwin should be ready to start training again by May (not a doctor, just based on my experience w/these types of surgeries – i am a claims manager).

by BeeTrain on Nov 3, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yep this is a very different level of surgery than a spinal fusion but any time you work on the spine there are risk. It’s good that he came out of it ok.

very interesting. thanks for the insight.

I'm not sure about Tito's...

but I do remember seeing what Nate Q.. had infused into his spine.. like a piece of lego block.. right after his win over Pete Sell part 2. Man.. that was pretty amazing.. to come back from the procedure he had.. I wish the same for Carwin.

Heal fast, Shane

But not too fast, I don’t think they fixed up your lactic acidosis while they had you open.

This could be great for Carwin.

He could drop some muscle, have better movement, and better wrestling.

All the things he needs in one little surgery.

Back surgery is a very risky proposition. The odds are stacked against coming back as good or better. Whether it is your speed, mobility, power or whatever else it may be something if not more than one thing is bound to suffer

It’s hard to truly call a surgery a success until you’ve fully recovered.

Did he get a lung transplant too?

Just curious.
