Paul Daley: 'I’d Like to Fight Noons After I Knock Out Scott Smith'
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker had previously told MMAWeekly Radio that internal talks were to put the winner of Daley vs. Smith in with Brazilian slugger Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos with the eventual victor becoming the new No. 1 contender in the welterweight division.Decemeber 4th, live on Showtime from St. Louis, Missouri:
"Without being disrespectful Cyborg or to Mr. Coker, I don’t think a fight with Cyborg is something that I’m looking for at the moment to be honest with you."
"I’d rather fight KJ Noons or Nick Diaz straight away or a Tyron Woodley, who’s really not a bigger name, but I respect him and think that a fight with him will not only be a challenge for me, but will also be an exciting fight and a fight Strikeforce can promote," Daley commented.
Santos hasn’t competed since a June TKO win over Marius Zaromskis, but has been mentioned as a possible title contender since dropping down to welterweight. K.J. Noons has been taking time off since his fight with Diaz and there has been no word if the pro boxer and MMA fighter will make a return to lightweight or stay at welterweight in the near future.

True
I remember Kos spending months in intensive care in a medically induced coma after Daley had that free shot on him after the fight and he caved Kos’ face in. Then there were the titanium plates Kos had to get in his face, the months of rehab as he relearned how to speak and eat.
Poor Kos. He’s lucky to be alive after absorbing that face caving punching power of Daley.

I’m not sure I understand Daley’s reasoning for this. If he beats Smith, then he fights Cyborg for the the number 1 contender. Why fight Noons? And does he really think if he beats Smith he gets an immediate title shot? Why?
Why call a lightweight out? (I hope Noons stays at LW, he’s much better there).
Well, this is Strikeforce. Maybe he knows something we don’t.

High profile over the belt? I guess the fighters also know that the Strikeforce belt doesn’t mean much.

The title just keeps him there.
Maybe 2 KO wins over some names that the casual watchers know he might get back in on the UFC’s good sides.

Title should have read Strikeforce Matchmaker Paul Daley
Seriously Strikeforce needs to get a fucking grip on their fighters and stop letting them dictate who fights who all the time. It’s bad for business and counter productive when fighters always pick and choose while SF takes a backseat and gets screwed.

Let's not get things out of context here
This was an interview with Daley and he gave some candid answers, but that does not mean he’s actually making the matches. He is simply explaining who he would like to fight, but that doesn’t mean that he is the matchmaker and has some sort of leverage to handpick his own opponents. Many MMA fans jump to this conclusion with Ed Soares as well when he gives an answer to a question, and MMA fans think he’s making the matchups when all he’s doing is answering a specific question.
Check out MMA For You at http://www.youtube.com/user/Gobusiness123 for MMA reviews, predictions, and analysis.
I might believe that more if Jake Shields hadn’t been offered Souza twice and ducked him both times. If Gilbert wasn’t telling every one that will listen who he will and will not fight. If Babalu hadn’t turned down the title shot so as not to fight Mo. Etc, etc.
Coker needs to start getting on the record when he tries to make a fight and the fighter won’t take it. That would help cut down on fighters cherry picking their fights so they can try to go to the UFC with perfect records.
I’m not sure I understand Daley’s reasoning for this. If he beats Smith, then he fights Cyborg for the the number 1 contender. Why fight Noons? And does he really think if he beats Smith he gets an immediate title shot? Why?
It’ s the UFC attitude. Once you are in the UFC and listen to the hype all day long you start to think that you don’t even have to train to beat some one out of the UFC. It is just a given. Daley almost lost his first fight because he didn’t take it seriously, Jardine did loose his first fight out, Hendo lost his first fight out etc, etc. For Daley it’s worse though because he thinks he just has to have two fights and then Dana will open his arms.
Coker has a good plan and if I was him I would tell Daley that if he beats Smith he is fighting Evangalista. If he doesn’t like it he can pack his shit and go back to the MFC.
Would be gr8 to see Smith knock Daley’s head into the second row seating.
So does this mean Cain is eating a roadkill burger and drinking a Coors Light about now?
When pigs fly
If Smith wants to win, he better rediscover his ground game in a hurry. He’s not out-boxing Paul Daley.

Daley needs to be a fighter
and stfu and fight whoever they put in front of him. Real mma artists don’t pick and choose opponents. Train some ground stuff already.
Koshcheck controlled him with such ease it’s laughable.
I think I am starting to root for Smith actually..
..!..
So he requests Woodley who would be a horrible matchup for him, over Cyborg, who is tailor-made for Daley’s KO power, and somehow that makes him less of a fighter?
Don’t believe everything Dana says. Fighters ask for specific fights all the time. Daley’s not ducking anyone, he’s just trying to put himself in big fights, which is totally reasonable, given the fact that he’s the second-highest ranked WW in the entire promotion.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Daley's trying to put himself in a fight
against someone who has NO ground game.
Paul Daley is one dimensional…just like Dan Hardy and Michael Bisping…
Paul Daley was given the most favorable matchups by Dana…with the exception of Kos.
What has Woodley ever done to prove he's got a ground game?
A few submission wins and a spot on the US wrestling team? Not impressed.
Who do you think Daley is ducking?
Santos sure as hell doesn’t have a ground game. All the guys he mentioned are more dangerous to him than Cyborg Santos and his bad knees.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

I was being sarcastic
Woodley’s got 4 true submissions wins in 8 fights. He was also ranked by the US Olympic wrestling team.
Totally agree, he’s a much much bigger threat than Cyborg.
I need to get my sarcasm meter checked

my point was not that he was ducking
it was that he should just fight whoever the organization that pays him wants him to fight, and stop biting all the hands that try to feed him.
PS: that green thumb can go right ’ere

Michael Bisping is one dimensional…way to look ignorant. That’s exactly the opposite, he is good enough at everything, but excellent at really nothing, well rounded.

As others have said, Mike Bisping certainly didn’t look one dimensional on his back against Kang. He also has some of the most under rated GnP in the division. He might not have one punch knock out power but if he gets on top of you he wont stop throwing punches until the ref steps in.
Dan Hardy certainly didn’t look one dimensional against GSP. He was dominated, yes. But if Hardy had no ground game he’d have been submitted in the first round, the moment he was taken down. Not get back to his feet on numerous occasions, survive numerous submission attempts and take one of the best wrestlers in MMA to a 5 round decision.
Daley i can’t really argue with, he needs to improve everywhere bar his stand-up. But it looks as if you’re just lumping Bisping and Hardy in there with him in an attempt to show you don’t like British fighters, pretty silly.
Goldberg: "He's got him in some kind of strange choke I've never seen before!"
Rogan: "That's a rear naked choke."
If you look at Hardy's record
its hard to make an argument that he’s not one dimensional.
It takes much less knowledge and skill to defend than it does to attack on the ground. Hardy hasn’t submitted anyone in years, and rarely attempts a take down. Of the 4 sub wins he does have, 2 came from punches and 1 was an injury. He also has 3 sub losses.
Oh I don’t doubt that his stand up is his strongest point. Most fighters out the UK will happily admit their Wrestling/ground is the weakest part of their game, but that’s why Hardy has moved to the U.S in an attempt to change that.
As for the fight with GSP, admittedly it was at times GSP’s slight tweaking of technique that didn’t allow him to complete the sub, however in his post fight interview with Rogan GSP gave Hardy credit saying he certainly didn’t expect Hardy to be as good on the ground as he was.
Goldberg: "He's got him in some kind of strange choke I've never seen before!"
Rogan: "That's a rear naked choke."
GSP is a gentleman :P
He always says great things about his opponent.
I don’t think Hardy is terrible on the ground, compared to an average fighter. Its just that the competition level is so high in the UFC and his striking is so much better.
Its like me saying I’m bilingual, sure I can speak enough Spanish to communicate, but I’d much rather be speaking English.
Absolutly, he’s certainly not within the elite on the ground, nowhere near it to be honest. He needs vast improvement but thats what he’s looking to do.
I suppose we’re in agreement though as like you say, his stand up is far better than his ground.
I was more just responding to the OP that claimed he was one dimensional. I wouldn’t say he was, one aspect of his game is just far superior to the other.
Goldberg: "He's got him in some kind of strange choke I've never seen before!"
Rogan: "That's a rear naked choke."
He kinda did say KJ Noons first...
Thats a small LW at best…
Noons at any weight
is a better, more dangerous, more dynamic fighter than Cyborg Santos, who is a one-note guy on the downside of his career. Noons last fought at WW and, outside of Daley and Diaz, is the biggest name WW that Strikeforce has on its roster.
Noons boxing is slick as hell, and could give Daley fits, especially if he works the jab like previous opponents have been able to do with success.
If you see anything in that interview other than Daley looking for a big, exciting fight, you’re looking too hard.

^^^ I agree
Im going to smith on this fight as well, i have never cared much for daley, any fighter who complains about who he is fighting next is annoying. Take the fights that are given, win them get paid, if you win in good enough fashion you will get your “high profile” fights, your job is to fight, not complain.
I will take you down like a SWEET MUFFIN!!
i wish you could anti-rec on here. daley fought on impact fc for god’s sake against a nobody, do you really think he is worried he just wants money fights like the rest of strikeforce. he didn’t go to strikeforce to fight scrubs, he came to fight the best.

Exactly
When Daley is fighting well, he doesn’t dominate guys by controlling position. He dominates them by putting his fist through them. I like Cung Le, but Scott Smith is in for a whole different level of striking power with Daley.

I think Cung's kicks are about as hard as they come.
That particular day, Scott Smith was not going down. Almost anyone with a pulse would have went to sleep.
His punches are pretty powerful too. Although, I agree, Daley’s hooks are definitely more powerful than the straight punches Le throws.
The Comeback Kid
scores another 3rd round KO over Daley while getting dominated for the first two rounds…
I would probably lose my mind.
Definitely rooting for Smith. He’s a good sized welterweight with some pop in his hands. His major problem has always been his striking defense, which Daley will probably make him pay for. That said, I’d really like to see Daley fight Cyborg. That fight would be a serious barn burner.

Travis Lutter is not the Michael Jordan of BJJ
Maybe Daley's thinking outside the box
Every other fighter who’s called out a well-matched opponent has gotten a pointless or lopsided match up.
Maybe Daley’s asking for a pointless, lopsided match up to trick Coker into setting up a compelling fight.
Maybe he wants to lose to Woodley
so that he can get a title shot

Daley has been underwhelming in every fight since he joined SF.
He got lucky to win his last one, and couldn’t KO a LW in a WW matchup.
Don’t expect too much else this time around.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
George Carlin
Masvidal exposed him
Jorge has some top shelf boxing, but his wrestling is terrible. The fact that he(a LW) got Daley down with ease is not a good sign.
All one of them?
I don’t remember the timing precisely, but I believe Daley has had two fights since he left the UFC, both of which were wins and one of which was a stoppage. I don’t think he looked great against Masvidal, but he’s got a whole career of entertaining fights and highlight reel KOs to use as benchmarks.
