UFC 125: Brian Stann Talks Chris Leben - 'I Wanted to Prove I'm Tougher'

"And there's only one way to do that and that's fight him. So we called Joe Silva and told him this is the match-up we want. He called Chris (Leben) and like a true fighter that Chris is, he accepted. He doesn't want to sit around and wait for somebody, I know Wanderlei Silva got hurt, so (Leben) accepted. I expect to go in there and get 'Fight of the Night' for this."

January 1st, live on pay-per-view from Las Vegas, Nevada:

Brian "All American" Stann (9-3)
Win Mike Massenzio - Submission (Triangle Choke) UFC Versus 2
Loss Phil Davis - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 109
Win Rodney Wallace - Decision (Unanimous) TUF 10 Finale
Chris "The Crippler" Leben (25-6)
Win Yoshihiro Akiyama - Submission (Triangle Choke) UFC 116
Win Aaron Simpson - TKO (Punches) TUF 11 Finale
Win Jay Silva - Decision (Unanimous) UFC FN 20

I thought Chris was tied up with the suspected DUI. Is he still fighting?

That appears to be the case.

Isn’t Stann partners with Rashad? “like a true fighter that Chris is, he accepted. He doesn’t want to sit around and wait for somebody”

truth.

Rashad has fought Chuck, Forrest, Lyoto, T. Silva, and Rampage in succession. People need to stop acting like he’s scared. He’s doing the smart thing for his career, by waiting for a title shot.

"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

Leben by KO

Stann should bring his M-4 to the cage if he wants to put the Cat-Smasher out.

Hey I want leben to win

but i find it odd that harris is gone for being mentally crapped out in the 3rd round but Leben is a legal mess (more than once) yet still fights on. WAR HAWAII.

Leben don't mess around in the cage.

That’s where it counts most. Most folks probably don’t even know about the DUI, but they remember how bad that third round was.

But..

..if Stann can win, he’s locked in for the long term.

Better to aim high and risk failure than trundle along at the undercard level until his time runs out.

Both guys are going to bring the fury in this one.

Excitement

Brian ’I’ll get punched in the face for you’ Stann is just looking for the FOTN bonus and nothing else. If anything, a wise business decision facing roster cuts. If I knew anything about him other than that he is a marine I might like him more. Marine is not a personality, I respect what you do more that you know but he’s the only Marine I know who never stops talking about it.

he danced the 2nd time he fought the robot, what’s his name, steve cantwell, if he danced from him to eke out a decision, there’s no way i see him trying to bang with leben and his tolerance for punches. stann will chance his plan real quick once leben starts landing.

Brian Stann Talks Chris Leben -'I Wanted to Prove I'm Tougher'

Well let me save you some time Brian. You’re not tougher , you don’t hit as hard, and you can’t obsorb half as much damage and stay awake. ….. oh yeah and chris’s tattoos are way cooler.

………. and Brian…… you’re welcome.

Riddle me this...

..should fighters at Stann’s level not try to get fights against guys higher up than them?

Because, for mine, that’s what they’re supposed to be doing. Kind of hard to climb otherwise.

Koscheck eats it.

by Ozzz on Nov 27, 2010 11:59 AM EST reply actions

In the current state of the UFC...

I’d say no. Take on Dongi Yang, Kyle Noke, or Rafael Natal. These are fights that will help you work your way up to fighters like Leben and Belcher. Because losing to Leben won’t get you permanent status on the Main Cards. Stann will stick around for a while because the brand needs him for Military cards and publicity though. So he doesn’t really have to worry about his job. But this is a very HIGH risk chance he’s taking as far has his status as a fighter is concerned.

I see it the other way.

Yes, Leben is a tough fighter, but he’s been beaten by undercarders before. Let’s not forget Kalib Starnes put Leben out, as did Jake Rosholt and Jason MacDonald.

While Leben’s full on zombie march approach to fighting often works, his list of victories isn’t as huge as his reputation for fun fights, and his gameplan sometimes just sets him up for a fall.

My guess is Stann thinks he can get Leben on his back and keep him there, even if he can’t put him out of his misery and, stylistically, Stann’s a better shot here than he would be against a Demian Maia or Crazy Tim Credeur.

Koscheck eats it.
