Paulo Thiago: Kill or Be Killed via Tatame

"I messed up (in my fight with Diego Sanchez). I was winning the first round, up until the half of the second round, but he was able to take me down and I got tired. I messed up during the weight cutting, losing weight right on the last minute. It was not a good result, but because it was Fight of the Night I’ll be getting another chance" (laughs).

"I’m waiting to see who I’ll fight next, I think this will be my last chance. Now it’s either kill or be killed. If I win I stay, if I lose I’m out".

This guy is such a fucking badass

I hope he pulls through, he’s usually in entertaining fights.

wholeheartedly agree.

Love Paulo Thiago. Humble badass who KILLS CRIMINALS FOR A LIVING.

WAR BOPE.

There’s a great brazillian film called “BOPE: Special Forces”. It’s brutal to watch, but a great way to see what these guys go through, both in training and missions. Makes me look worthless by comparison.

the sequel came out btw

not sure if they’re showing on the US, probably not, but if you liked the first one try getting the sequel through Amazon when it comes out on dvd, it’s was good too.

I just realized we're not talking about the same movie

is the one you’re talking about a documentary? Nevermind :p

You were thinking about Tropa de Elite ?

Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.

yeah

but that wasn’t a documentary, there has been many documentaries made regarding BOPE, but Trop de Elite had international ratings, that’s why I got confused.

It went straight to DVD. I hope the second one opens in theaters

yeah, I'm not surprised

it’s very hard for a foreign film to make it into the US theater market, I think the only Brazilian film that did that was City of God, and that was only in a few selected theaters still.

Paulo Thiago isn’t a member of the real BOPE, he’s a “BOPE” officer in Brasilia, the capital. The real BOPE is in Rio and it was started in Rio because of the favela crime problem; Brasilia/Sao Paulo don’t have the same problem or need for the type of BOPE that Rio has.

The cities around Brasília are very poor and dangerous

But your right, it’s not the same job as being a BOPE police officer in Rio.

by Henrique on Nov 26, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

uh?

Have you ever been to Brasilia?

Brasilia does have a Batalhão de Operações Especiais (BOPE). Is it the same one as the one portrayed in TDE? No, but it’s still BOPE.

My BJJ instructor is the close combat trainer/course instructor for Rio’s BOPE… if he hears people bring up Brasilias BOPE all we hear for the next 30 minutes are curse words and repeated use of the word “pussies”.

Not saying the other cities special police forces aren’t well trained, but from what I understand it’s two completely different levels of crazy badasses.

Doesn’t look familiar. Brasilia’s version deff isn’t bad but they’re not on the level of Rio’s They don’t drill CQB as frequently nor as aggressively, their policies are different and Iron Sights FTL, all around the Federal District’s BOPE isn’t on the same level. Paulo is still cool though.

That’s weird as hell, considering that Brasilia BOPE sounds akin to “capital city police SWAT.”

I have to wonder if they’ll give him someone easy like the winner of Guymon vs DeMarques Johnson, or someone like Ellenberger. They could give him Hathaway seeing that both are coming from a loss. Seeing the list, Paulo Thiago has fought a majority of the top UFC Welterweights out there, and he was competitive in all those fights win or lose.

how many easy fights are there at WW

Don’t get me wrong, the man came in with and undefeated record and went straight to the main card.

But I doubt that these losses have made him a worse fighter, if anything if he does get cut all he will do is destroy other fighters in the farm leagues until he gets called back.

He may never be champ but P. Thiago will be a perennial top 10 WW for the next couple years which is saying a lot.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

by The Blackula on Nov 26, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

the funny part is, i think none of those fights is an easy fight

even though they have less name brand, those are all great fighters. Gives you a real sense of how stacked WW is.

by Body Triangle on Nov 26, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

Ellenberger and Hathaway would not be easy for sure. I should not have used the word “easy,” but I meant that as far as rankings and where certain fighters on the Welterweight ladder. Fighters like Guymon, DeMarques Johnson, and even James Wilks are on the low-to-mid-tier of the Welterweight ladder. Obviously, there are no easy fights in the UFC Welterweight Division.

Funny thing is that after reading Thiago’s list of opponents above, I was thinking that if he loses his next fight then we’re looking at another Jardine, albeit more badass. Nice post.

I hope they give Thiago an easy fight next. I don’t want him to be in a position where the UFC has to cut him for the sake of being consistent.

by Mint on Nov 26, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Another Jardine?

Except without all the brutal KO losses.

by gao on Nov 26, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Thiago wasn’t looking as bad as Jardine in his last couple of fights IMO. Plus: when has the UFC ever cared about consistency? :)

To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.

good call

that’s a logical matchup at this point.
the only argument against it would perhaps be that Ellenberger is on a win streak and Thiago is not. But i don’t think it matters, because i think most fans realize they’re on the same level.

I find it fascinating...

… how fighter’s paths can diverge. Back when Paulo KO’d Koscheck, it sure didn’t look like Kos was headed to a title shot while Paulo was headed towards a loser-leaves-town match.

What a difference a few fights can make. Witness Forrest and Shogun. Or Sonnen and Okami.

by pancakehead on Nov 26, 2010 2:25 PM EST reply actions

This is why it makes sense for the UFC

to cut some guys after only one loss, and not cut others even if they lose three in a row.

Here are the three people Kos has beat to earn his title shot:

Frank Trigg
Anthony Johnson
Paul Daley

Meanwhile, Paulo Thiago has fought Fitch, Volkman, Swick, Kampmann, and Diego Sanchez. If Kos had fought those five, I wonder if he’d have had exactly the same record as Thiago, 2-3?
