Well it's kinda weird situation
Mma fans hate him cuz they know what happened back in the time when he was representing korea in judo competitions but since non mma fans don’t know about any of background story they rly like akiyama

Didn’t greasing vs a universally liked fighter like sakuraba hurt his popularity too? And one greasegate video I saw alleges that his glove may have been tampered with too, as it didn’t have the logo/seal as all the other gloves did.

He had similar rumors in judo competitions too. People accused him for wearing extremely slippery gis. And greasing himself in the fight against sakuraba got him a new nickname: choo girem. Which means akiyama the grease.
