Herschel Walker Injured, Out of Strikeforce Dec. 4th

via strikeforce.com

Via Strikeforce press release:
Herschel Walker sustained a deep cut under his left eye that required multiple stitches while training Monday at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., and will not be able to fight on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

"I feel terrible about this,’’ said Walker, who was cut from a knee strike while training with AKA teammate and two-time United States Olympic wrestling team member Daniel Cormier. "I know things like this happen in all sports, but I had trained very hard and was excited to be returning to the cage again. I hope to fight again as soon as the cut heals.’’

An announcement about a possible replacement fight for the telecast will be made in the coming days.
Dec 4th, live Showtime from St. Louis, Missouri:
Dan Henderson vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral
TBA vs. Scott Carson
Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith
Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland
Antonio Silva vs. Valentijn Overeem

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Sobral coverage

What weight division is Herschel in?

I know this is kind of mean, and I never want to see someone injured, but this card is actually a lot better without Herschel Walker on it. I understand why he’s booked and all that, but as a fan of the sport, a relevant MMA fight replacing it on the card is cool with me.

I'm kinda bummed...

….I have Showtime free for the next 3 months, and I wanted to see him fight at least once, for novelties sake.

I’m sure Todd Duffee is available to step in and murder Scott Carson.

yea, but this is going to hurt because Walker is one of their best fighters for getting sports media attention outside of the mma world.

by Phildo on Nov 24, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

The 1st time was good for that

I don’t think it has the same effect the 2nd time around.

He has already been on Sports Radio in NY to talk about this fight. If SF is able to get another fighter on there to talk about the fight, it won’t be anywhere near as effective as getting Walker on again.

The curse of the eye poke is upon Strikeforce.

Put Barnett in as a replacement and let’s see what he has these days.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Herschel recovered in time for a Jan 29th card with Fedor vs Bigfoot and Mayhem vs Diaz.

I think they are trying to put something together for CBS to pick up. And for fitefan below, Strikeforce and M-1 are supposedly negotiating to get Fedor to fight on the end of January card and the fighter they’ve asked for tune up fight is Bigfoot. They probably expect Bigfoot to blow through Overeem and be ready in 8 weeks for that match.

by John Nash on Nov 24, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Got a source for that? If true then that means Fedor has signed the extension. That could then mean the HW tournament is a go.

by fitefan on Nov 24, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

A few days ago on Josh Gross’s Twitter. He’s betting on Fedor in January for Strikeforce but it’s still no guarantee.

by John Nash on Nov 24, 2010 8:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Have to feel bad for Hendo if that’s the case.

He just lost the biggest draw on this card on Showtime, after waiting around for another CBS card to get put together, and now he’s taking a fight at a time that is going to make it hard for his schedule to match up with the next CBS card.

by Phildo on Nov 24, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe Hendo makes the card if – and it’s still only an if – they schedule that card for February. Still I don’t see them booking Calvacante/Hendo on CBS. I’m wondering if they can get Gina Carano a cakewalk to support her films release? Now that’d be a big card.

Crazy how this works...

The MMA world shit a brick when Aldo’s fight got cancelled, mass media couldn’t care less.
Walker can’t fight and mass media won’t even show up at the event now. MMA world… Meh.

As far as MMA goes, Walker is there to appeal to casual fans. I don’t see a problem with the response.

if Carson still ends up fighting on this card

I’ll eat my balls.

Ok, maybe that was metaphorical. but you know what i mean.
then again, Memitim maybe right and they may bring in a bruiser from their ever orbiting (never meeting) heavy weight roster for a quick workout…

TBA v. Scott Carson

LOL. Like Carson’s staying on that card.

Might get the untelevised slot as a tune up fight. But I agree, no way does he stay on the televised part. Unless Batista is good to go.

by fitefan on Nov 24, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

That would be damn harsh on TBA. He waited for ages for his big fight with Lashley, but it never materialised, he should definitely be on the televised card to make up for it

I do respect that Walker is training with a legitimate camp with some very good fighters (it doesn’t get much better than training with Daniel Cormier, and I think that he trains with Cain Velasquez as well). As far as the fight is concerned, it was a gimme fight for Walker and a total novelty fight. I am a fan of Walker just on how he carries himself in front of the media, and how positive he is towards MMA, so I personally would like to see him fight on a later Strikeforce card.

Everyone is talking about the possible fights that they could do instead

but I bet they just move the Finney fight up from the undercard. I hope for Woodley (asked to on the card) or Gracie/Kyle or Spirtwofl/Marius though.
