Floyd Mayweather Jr. Facing Yet Another Criminal Accusation

LAS VEGAS - APRIL 28: CEO of Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe (L) talks with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. during the final news conference for Mayweather's bout against Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino April 28, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It seems like Manny Pacquiao can do no wrong as of late in becoming a huge international star and impressing every time he steps into a ring. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Floyd Mayweather Jr. It was bad enough that Floyd went on a racist tirade about Pacquiao, but he now has legal trouble piling up seemingly by the day.

Now the Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that Quincey Williams, a former associate of Mayweather, has told police that he was recently ran off the road by Floyd. Williams was also the victim of a shooting in 2009 by Ocie Harris. Harris, was Mayweather's bodyguard and Williams has maintained that Mayweather threatened his life earlier that day.

Mayweather was accused of misdemeanor battery when he got into an altercation with a security guard earlier this month, that investigation is ongoing. He is also currently out on bail for felony charges in connection with a domestic violence case. There have been other domestic violence charges against Mayweather which have been dropped but he was convicted of two misdemeanor domestic violence charges in 2003 and was convicted in 2005 of beating two women for seemingly no reason at Luxor in Las Vegas.

While it needs to be made clear that many of these cases are still under investigation, Mayweather is starting to work his way comfortably into that "do you really want to see him getting big paydays?" category that we talked about so much with Antonio Margarito.

Update: Due to the LVRJ's love of suing blogs for quoting their material we will not be directly quoting them nor providing a direct link to their story. We believe in fair use and legal precedent plus the norms of the internet and do not concede that its anything but fairuse to link and quote.

Oh my god! What does this mean for the sport of boxing? What are the casual boxing fans going to think? There is legitimate concern of a cumulative effect when the most well known personalities in boxing are making these unnecessary mistakes in public!

by Jahbulon on Nov 24, 2010 10:23 AM EST reply actions

First of all, I’ve said it over and over but in boxing the boxers are the brand. In the UFC the promotion is the brand. Floyd hurts his own brand…that’s a big difference.

On a side note, if you’re going to go from post to post being a dick about content we’ve posted, I will ban you. Consider this your warning.

Floyd hurts his own brand…

I agree with you, but I think he still does solid PPV numbers.

Regardless of what he does shy of rape and murder Floyd won’t get a tiger woods level backlash. It seems like fight sports get a pass.

There’s a cultural element at play with guys like Mayweather, Margarito, etc.

Don't want to put words in your mouth Brent

But I’ll speak for myself as a black man. When it comes to our pro athletes/celebrities, African Americans will support to the bitter end. Now I couldn’t tell you how large of a portion of Floyd’s PPV buyers are black but I would be willing to guess its a pretty good chunk. Therefore, if amidst all this controversy Mayweather decides to book a fight, I am pretty sure it won’t stop his African American fanbase from supporting him.

Oddly, rape doesn’t seem to stop really big boxing draws either. Tyson/McNeeley did 1.55 million buys in a totally different PPV era.

by VirtualBalboa on Nov 24, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

that's the thing w/PPV

fans pay to either watch you win, or they pay to watch you lose….either way they’re gonna run and buy the PPV event. it’s a win/win for the fighter in regards to $$

by BeeTrain on Nov 24, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

I would never buy a boxing match to watch a guy lose.

If I hate a guy, I will not pay him.

You are right though. The masses will still buy.

Thing also about boxing is that it's built upon icons

Although their are some names that “legendary in MMA”, they are not legendary to Sports history.

Mayweather—like him or hate him— is of that nature and will continue to be a draw even if he did do something “Kobe Bryant in Denver” level.

Tyson is a cultural icon.

His name is still bigger than Pretty boy Floyd. Some times the idea that no publicity is bad publicity is truer than you would think.

Tyson didnt rape that chick.

Tyson got convicted for being the scariest mother F-er alive,Not rape.
Look into that case, its fishy as hell.

I don't think that's VirtualBalboa's point though...

… the fact that the allegations were out there and news coverage over the incident was on EVERY outlet, Tyson was still able to draw a significant pay-per-view draw.

Boxing is one of those sports (as truck mentioned) that you can do almost about anything and still “make a HUGE paycheck” in the end.

Hitting chicks is unforgivable.
