Pacquiao vs. Margarito, UFC 122 and WEC 52 Recap, UFC 123 Predictions on The Fight Fix

Host Dustin Green breaks down the week in combat sports by looking back at results from UFC 122, WEC 52 and the boxing mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.

We then take a look at UFC 123. Yours truly stops by to make predictions for the main and co-main events. I'm confident that Lyoto Machida will make Quinton Jackson miss, but I'm less confident about my pick of B.J. Penn over Matt Hughes. As I say in the video, Penn should never lose to Hughes. He waxed Hughes the first time they fought and was en route to doing that again in the rematch before the injury/fatigue set in. I'm not exactly confident with his preparation this time out nor with his mental state. There's no debating the place where Hughes is mentally heading into this bout is superior to wherever Penn is. But on paper, Penn should never lose to Hughes. It simply should not happen. Penn is too well-rounded and has offensive opportunities in too many dimensions of the game.

But, of course, this is MMA, so Hughes stopping a Penn who simply didn't show up to fight wouldn't be much of a surprise either.

Well

Gross going to ESPN is a huge step up for them and for MMA coverage more generally. I’m happy to see him in that position.

As for me, I’m happy for every opportunity that comes my way.

The longer the beard, the more perceived wisdom.

Good show and I agree with the picks. The only way I see Machida losing is if he goes out there with the same aggressive game plan he had for Shogun\Machida II and I still think he could win that way. Penn\Hughes is a harder pick. It depends on which BJ shows up. I’ve got Bj for the win, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Hughes grinds him down.

It's official. Les Miles DOES NOT have a deal with the devil. He beat him Nov. 6th, 24-21.

Yeah

I just don’t know about Penn. Like I said, he “shouldn’t” lose to Hughes, but that’s just the operative word. He has such a huge capacity to blow it.

Maybe if it was a 5 rounder I’d give it to Hughes. If BJ does starts to fade, I expect it in third. There is no way Hughes is taking the first two.

Great appearence Luke

You’re being an excellent ambassador for the site!

The Penn Hughes fight is the one that I’m really hyped up for, just too see where both fighters are mentally. There has been a lot of talk about Rampage’s mental readiness, but what about Machida? His first definitive “loss” might have had an impact on how he fights, but we’ll see. I’m still puttin the house on Machida :P

I would love to hear a solid argument for Rampage. I can not see how he will pull off a victory.

Hughes vs Penn III

First off, THIS is good time to have a third matchup between these two. Unlike Zuffa’s desire to punch us in the face with a third matchup between Mir and Lesnar. I think that matchup might be the first 4 time matchup in UFC History. Smh. “Unbelievable!”

As far as Hughes and BJ, I agree with Luke that Penn “should” win this fight, but the momentum (and seemingly “confidence”) is riding with Hughes.

I just don’t think Penn wants to adapt his fighting style to handle would be wrestlers and grapplers that want to do the same things that Edgar has done in his two matches against him. His recently made comments about his size disadvantage is unlike the old BJ Penn and possibly could be from his stubbornness to improve his game in oher areas.

Lyota wants NONE of Rampage up close.

Unless, Machida has seriously been working on his brawling/striking-close-quarters, it would be VERY unwise for him to close in and try to clinch or strike with Rampage Jackson as that plays to his strength.

I see Machida looking for his opportunity to strike and grapple by moving around and finding the best angle to do so. Rampage, to date, does not show that he moves effectively and finds the best angle to strike his opponent.

I see Machida galloping around the ring looking for his best opportunity to close in and strike and get a take down, but SURELY not going toe to toe in the center of the ring for a takedown.

Good showing Luke.

I agree with what you said about BJ Penn having more skills to beat Hughes than Hughes has to beat him but I’ve gotta pick Hughes over Penn. It’s a cliche for a reason, In this sport you’re only as good as your last fight and based on last fights I’ve gotta pick Hughes. Hughes is finally having some fun in the octagon again. His win over Almedia was extremely impressive. Bj on the other hand had a pretty bad showing his last time out and it made me think he’s lost his will to fight, not to mention his trainers are terrible. I see Hughes being able to take Penn down and hold him down for 3 rounds. It’s not pretty but it’s a good win on Hughes’ final run at the title.

For the Machida/Rampage fight I agree 100%. Machida is going to frustrate Page on the feet and take him apart. Machida by 2nd round ko. This sadly coming from a Rampage fan.

BJ Penn probably shouldn’t ever lose to Matt Hughes, but I really think he will Saturday. He seems to have just stopped caring about fighting. I think Hughes grinds out a UD victory via takedowns and top position.

Good show, Luke

But what did you mean when you said Fifty-Fifty Grip? An overhook and underhook?

I showed a C-grip

But I meant one underhook locked up.

Gotcha

I was going to say, I’ve never heard a C grip called that. S-grip, Wigan grip, Butcher’s grip, Fatman grip, Monkey grip and Finger grip, though.
