Fabricio Werdum Wants to Fight Outside of Strikeforce Before Facing Fedor Emelianenko or Alistair Overeem

Will Strikeforce allow Fabricio Werdum to take a fight overseas before he faces Fedor Emelianenko or Alistair Overeem?

Fabricio Werdum had surgery on his arm shortly after his monumental upset over long time heavyweight kingpin, Fedor Emelianenko. Two months removed from that, and Werdum says he has fully recovered and plans to fight again very soon. That next fight may not be for Strikeforce though, as the #4 ranked heavyweight told Sherdog that he plans to have an overseas fight first:

"I used this trip to make a couple of good contacts in Abu Dhabi and Japan. Strikeforce want me to return in March against Fedor [Emelianenko] or [Alistair] Overeem, but I'm looking forward to having a fight before that one. I don’t have an exclusive contract with Strikeforce, only for the U.S., and I got a nice proposal in Abu Dhabi and another one in Japan... My arm is 100 percent now and I feel that by February, I'll be ready to fight in Abu Dhabi or Japan."

What has the several time jiujitsu world champ been up to during his time off? Well he has been touring the world teaching this new guard system that will make MMA fighters avoid getting punched in the face. More on that after the jump.

Star-divide

"Since I couldn't start training in the month after the surgery, I found that giving seminars was a great way to start my recovery little by little. I couldn’t make a better choice. My main concern during all those seminars was showing a new guard system for MMA that I developed. Today, most jiu-jitsu guys, while on the bottom, just close the guard and receive hard punishment. With the experience I've got in MMA plus the jiu-jitsu knowledge I've got from top guys like Sylvio Behring, Marcio Corleta, Mario Reis, Otavio 'Ratinho' [Couto] and Renato 'Babalu' [Sobral], I developed a new guard system that makes it really hard for someone on top to hit me."

"It's really impressive, I can tell you that I don’t take one single punch to my face using that system,"

I think this will hinge on how Overeem does in the GP, if he fights NYE and how much time he takes off after + injuries etc.

Fedor should already be fighting Josh Barnett to determine the number 1 contender.

Fedor has one fight left on his contract. How is he supposed to fight for a #1 contender spot when, right now, he only has one fight left?

by memitim on Nov 15, 2010 2:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Overeem vs. Werdum for the title as intended all along, then either Fedor vs. Barnett for top contender or simply put Fedor in the top contender spot if an extension or similar hasn’t been reached.

the dichotomy of exclusive v non exclusive contracts sucks. We get Coker who can not get a handle on his fighters. This is also exactly why Frank Shamrock's vision is flawed...

…a fighter’s best interests are usually not in-line with a fan’s best interests. When you let the fighters have too much control over the match ups they will begin to duck the best challenges in an effort to preserve their record. This was one of the greatest flaws in the boxing business model that has not been addressed in years. Like it or not, it’s the promotion that usually has their interests in-line with a fan’s best interests and that is to see good fights. Fighter’s by nature, are interested more in self-preservation.

Exactly

there is almost no chance he manages to pull one off against either Overeem or Fedor. Neither a fight from 5 years ago when Overeem was in the 220s nor his win over Fedor last tie give me any confidence he could beat them now…

Can’t say I blame Werdum, might as well make hay while the sun is shining in terms of his earning ability. Doing this also likely increases the amount M-1 will have to concede to get him back in with Fedor.

If the fighter he beat in his one big win can demand a TV deal and an even bigger contract, why wouldn’t he want more. Personally, I think its stupid that any of them are renegotiating, but if the loser demands the world, the winner better at least get his own private island.

If it is that, as I said, not new in the slightest

Erik Paulson has been teaching that for years (and one of Werdum’s admitted influences, Renato Sobral, has been at Paulson’s gym for a significant length of time). I’m not saying Paulson invented it, just used and has been using it for ages as other coaches probably have for MMA.

Werdum taking a fight somewhere else is bad, because if he has a fight somewhere else, he doesn’t have a fight in strikeforce.

by Phildo on Nov 15, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

He never HAD to fight in Strikeforce. Do you really think Greener pastures have all of a sudden popped up all over the world. Werdum has repeatedly stated that he will be back. Assuming otherwise is asinine.

by truck on Nov 15, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

it doesn’t matter that he will eventually been back.

Strikeforce’s HW division has been on hold for 6 months waiting for him to recover from surgery. Him taking a fight somewhere else before strikeforce pushes that back even further, that isn’t good for them. You don’t have to worry about any of the negative outcomes that other people have mentioned, they are all waiting for him. This delays his return, which is bad.

by Phildo on Nov 15, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Fighting outside of SF before fighting either Fedor or Overeem IS putting off a Strikeforce fight.

by Hardcase on Nov 15, 2010 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

Problem is, what if M-1drags things out a little more and that March fight turns into a May fight? Fabricio doesn’t have to wait around any more. He might take a March fight somewhere else and say to hell with waiting for Fedor.

by Steve4192 on Nov 15, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Fabricio doesn’t have to wait around any more.

He never did. It isn’t as though he made an amendment to his contract. He is just exercising his right to fight elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with that and it is a smart play on his part.

by truck on Nov 15, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree completely.

I have no problem with what Werdum is doing at all. But it does not bode well for Strikeforce. Up until now, he has been willing to work on their terms and willing to wait for them to offer him fights. With this move he has made it clear that if they aren’t going to make things happen, he will make them happen somewhere else. That is good for Werdum and a bad omen for Strikeforce.

It is basically the same thing that Overeem did when he told them he was tired of waiting and that he was going to spend the rest of the year concentrating on K-1. Strikeforce is not keeping these guys happy and they are starting to make plans outside of the promotion. I expect to see more guys taking this route as they grow more frustrated with Strikeforce’s ability to make fights happen.

by Steve4192 on Nov 15, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

It could also be merely a ploy in an attempt to force Strikeforce’s and M-1’s hand, with M-1 all too well aware that Werdum losing to anyone besides Fedor weakens Fedor’s negotiating position.

I think Overeem’s desire to fight K-1 when Strikeforce couldn’t put together the promised title fight (against the winner of the #1 contender match Werdum – Fedor) due to Werner’s injury is at least partly a result of K-1 being a far more prestigious title in his home country.

It’s kind of hard to defend your title when the promoter doesn’t offer you any fights, or for that matter, a contract. Overeem won the title in 2007 on the last fight of his contract. Strikeforce didn’t offer him a new contract until two years later.

It is a more than a little disingenuous to include those two years.

by Steve4192 on Nov 15, 2010 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

It would be disingenuous if he had shown any desire to fight here since the beginning of 2009. Now he is saying he won’t fight in Strikeforce till May of next year. After a while, enough is enough.

by memitim on Nov 15, 2010 3:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Its not up to him to pester Strikeforce to try to sign him/resign him/make matches involving him. He has plenty of other options, if SF doesn’t want to set up a fight, then so be it…

You are kidding yourself if you don’t think this is a warning shot at Strikeforce. Werdum has basically told Strikeforce ‘give me what I want or I will pursue other opportunities’.

So much fail in these posts. Yes the Russians are a PITA but that is about the only thing people have right here. Coker has the right of first refusal in Overeems contract. That means if he had a fight for him he could not have done K1 this year. Fedor was in negotiations and Werdum was injured. He had just destroyed Rogers, Barnett wasn’t signed yet. All the people bitching about him not fighting would have bitched twice as loud if he had fought Big Foot or Arlovski

So Coker let him do K1 while Werdum healed and he worked on negotiations with Fedor. Being reasonable is one of the reasons why SF has some of the fighters they do.

Fancy Pants has been sidelined ever since he ran his mouth about wanting out of Strikeforce. What do we see last week. Fancy Pants admitting that he fucked up and it was his fault. He is fighting at the end of January and so is JZ. Seems likely they will be fighting each other. If he gets by JZ he will likely get a fight with Thompson. Keep in mind how much time Thompson spends hurt these days. Why would he want to burn a fight on a guy from the challengers cards when he is in line for another title shot?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that SF is doing an amazing job and I love what they’re doing what their HW div. The fact is that their HW division is better than the UFC’s at the moment but until they put some effing fights on, people are going to be upset.

as to the reem bigfoot fight

it’s not relevent, it’s just an odd fight to have on the books. is it the only HW fight on the books right now?

Absolutely not. I already stated I have no problem with Werdum looking out for #1. I’m just pointing out that this a marked difference from how he has handled these delays in the past and that it does not bode well for Strikeforce.

If Fabricio wanted a fight before March, Strikeforce should have made that happen rather than telling him to wait for Fedor/Overeem. Werdum knows that those guys are are extremely difficult to pin down and that ‘wait until March’ can quickly turn into ‘wait until June’ and then ‘wait until August’. Now Strikeforce has yet another HW who has decided to go mercenary on their hands.

scuse me he should avenge the Arlovski loss

my head stopped working for a sec. they should still scrap the bigfoot fight, but it’s conterproductive to the arguement at hand.

Doesn't bother me

Look, Werdum earned a shot against Overeem for the title. Overeem is busy with K-1, and has said he probably won’t be back for SF until the spring. Werdum needs to get the rust off and keep busy, he is a fighter and makes his money that way doesn’t he? I can’t blame him here.
