Agreed. This will be a good fight, BUT
Should be Condit and Finch instead. The item that pops out to me is whose Jake’s last loss is too.
I was thinking the same thing.

damn they really hate fitch
what a step down. i mean, ellenberger is decidedly middle of the pack right?
he just beat Howard & Pyle
and imo won a decision against Condit – who is now every bandwagoner’s favorite WW. All three guys that Ellenberger has faced are no jokes.

I’ll be surprised if he KO’s Fitch.
Hey UFC4 go fuck yourself, how about that? Fucking punk, I was just asking for the source that says lesnar gets 5 mill a fight, it’s obvious one does not exist. Bunch of gabronis on a site pulling figures out of your ass.

Some of us always liked Condit
He got rocked brutally by Ellenberger (twice if I recall), recovered perfectly and came back to get the W.
And the Kampmann fight should have been a draw—IS technically a draw, according to FightMetric.
Ellenbberger is a tough, scary fighter, but this is a step down for Fitch.
Thank you
I got into MMA by watching WEC reruns late at night, Condit (and Chase Beebe) was the first fighter I ever really remembered and started rooting for, I damn near lost my mind when he KOed Hardy!
Not too much of a step down.
if it wasn’t for the questionable decision given to Condit, he’d be 3-0 in the UFC and he’s just as experienced as Fitch, although Fitch has faced the tougher competition.
Its a step down in name value at least
They keep giving Fitch these non marquee matchups. That’s why his record has so many wins in it, but so few title fights.

Agree with you
…but it’s also due to his camp & the fact that he just does not finish fights.

I would say that's entirely why he doesn't get the marquee fights

100%
anyone who fought and finished the names in fitch’s record would have had a title shot 3 times over
THis should be a decent fight though
Ellenberger’s wrestling is pretty solid, he’s gonna end up on his ass but I bet he actually stuffs a few.
Drink to remember, drink to forget.
Yeah, He needs to work his wrestling in the lead up to this fight.
Does he have enough to stay off his back? I don’t know, but if Pierce can steal a round, I suppose Jake could make it interesting.
Does anyone recall which round?
I only saw the fight once, but instinctually thought it was the 2nd…but someone I know is sure it was the first…just curious
CPG
Well Jake wanted Shields to prove how he could beat up a "boring lay and pray'er",
so now he’ll have to prove it against an arguably tougher equivalent. And it’s not like Ellenberger put on an exciting fight himself against Howard.
I thought it was pretty impressive his ground and pound was sick

Killer card

Great match-up.
If Fitch wants to win a grinding decision at least make him work for it. Ellenberger is extremely dangerous in the first couple rounds and theoretically has the power to rock Fitch standing and the takedown defense to keep him there a la Pierce. This card is shaping up to be a fun night of fights.
When a ball goes into a net, it only means something because we decide it means something. When somebody punches somebody in the face it always means something.
let's go Jake!
his transitions and dynamism reminds me of GSP.
I said it before, I’ll say it again…Ellenberger will finish what Pierce has started…

Ellenberger does have the explosive type of takedowns while Fitch has the type of grinding takedowns where he puts his opponent against the cage and really works for the takedown. It would be cool to see Ellenberger take Fitch down, but the more likely scenario is a typical fifteen minute Fitch type of fight. I don’t think that this is the worst stylistic type of fight for Ellenberger compared to Fitch’s last opponents, but then again, there is a good chance that we will see the typical Fitch performance.
Advice to Ellenberger against Fitch: Stay away from the cage, force scrambles from the bottom, do not close guard on the bottom and hope for the ref to stand you up because that won’t happen, move laterally as much as possible in the standup, Fitch is a slow starter so don’t let him get comfortable and be on him right at the beginning of the fight. If there is anything else that I am missing, feel free to point it out.

Except I can almost guarantee Ellenberger won't be as fresh in the third as Pierce was.
Ellenberger has got to finish early or he’s going to get laid on.

Fitch is 1 Chris lytle type fight from being on the undercard. What I mean is, the ufc has a habit of putting an “exciting” fight in that third spot of the ppv. With the inclusion of the wec, any way he gets bumped?

And I guess that Ellenbergers win over Pyle looks more impressive after Mike whooped Hathaway’s ass. But does that make this a contenters bout?

Im calling it!
Ellenberger takes the split decision!
I can back this
I see Fitch trying to pin Ellenberger against the fence. While Ellenberger mixes in a few punches in there.
I see at least two rounds like this with Ellenberger stealing at least one round. Fitch seems to get uncomfortable when he can’t easily take someone down.

this card is goddamn amazing.
this fight should be in typical fitch fasion tho, but the rest of the card should be super exciting:)
Wow. This is a huge "F U" right in Fitch's face from the UFC
Think about this: he was promised a title shot if he beat Alves. He won, and instead of a title shot, he gets Jake Ellenburger, a guy who’s not even in the top 10 (no disrespect to Ellenburger.)

Fitch also doesn’t want to fight Kos for the belt. That affects the UFC’s booking of fights when their #2 welterweight is selective over who he’ll fight. They could go ahead and announce him next against winner of GSP/Kos…but if Kos pulls off the unthinkable, then they have to turn around and find a new challenger anyway. They could book a high-profile bout like Condit/Fitch…but if Fitch and Koscheck win their fights, then the UFC is deprived of a title contender.
Perfectly said
I feel bad for Fitch. Dug his own grave in a way but to go from a titleshot to Jake Ellenberger…damn.

Poor Jon.
He wins and he’s supposed to. He loses and he falls to the back of the line. How many #1 contender’s bouts does Fitch need to win consecutively?
If Jake wins, Condit still has a (bullshit) win over him. Condit/Fitch makes way, way more sense to me.

I’d rather see that fight too, but the idea is likely to keep the top contenders (Condit and Fitch) on separate tracks to the belt, as matching them up would eliminate one from contention for the foreseeable future.
If Fitch wins against Ellenberger, he can fight for the belt. If Condit wins his next (I’m thinking Lytle or the Penn-Hughes winner) then he can fight for the belt. Depending on their respective performances, the UFC has options. That’s what they did with having Shields-Kampmann and Fitch-Alves within a short time span.
Fitch's road to the title goes like this
1. Beat Ellenberger
2. #1 contenders match with Condit
3. #1 contenders match with Kampmann
4. #1 contenders match with Shields
5. #1 contenders match with Thiago Alves
6. Retire.
Oh well, dude. You pissed off Dana and company by saying you’d never fight your teammate.

For five reasons, imo.
He’s homegrown, he’s a personality, he’s finished fights in the past, he’s a former champion and he doesn’t have a top contender in his weightclass who he refuses to fight.
except for Bones Jones, but point taken

Rashad has his title shot and Jones isn’t at the top yet.

chuck and wandy wont go past the 1st either
im saying fitch tries to stand though, he needs a ko to get a title shot and ellenbergers wrestling is good enough that if fitch does his usual strategy he’ll win by unanimous decision which puts him back at square one

Fitch needed another fight as Shields is now fighting for the belt. With the exception of Condit, the rest of the top contenders coming off of wins are all booked up for the foreseeable future. The UFC didn’t want to match Condit up with Fitch for fear of losing one of their top contenders.
For anyone saying this is a slap in the face to Fitch, this is still a main card spot on what looks to be the most stacked card of the year, that is also taking place on one of the UFC’s most high-profile weekend’s of the year.
Ellenberger is a tough-as-hell opponent who will bring the fight to Fitch, period. Fitch needed an opponent and Ellenberger deserved a step-up after his two recent stoppage victories over top guys.
This is.....not what I expected.
Pretty terrible match making IMO. Too much of a jump for Ellenberger and a major drop in competition for Fitch. Something else is going on. Maybe the UFC doesn’t want Fitch knocking off any more possibly contenders, or maybe they are just finishing out his contract, or maybe Dana is making things to personal. Who knows.
poor fitch the UFC really doesnt like him, so much for the winner of Alves vs Fitch II getting a title shot
The statements that the Alves/Fitch winner was getting a title shot were seemingly just a selling point for that fight and not realistic. If Alves won, did anyone really think the UFC was going to give him an immediate title match after he just lost to GSP in his previous fight? And after the UFC booked Shields-Kampmann, did anyone really think the UFC was going to give Fitch the next shot if Shields won? The only way the winner of that got a title shot would’ve been if Fitch won and Shields lost.
A lot of times Dana says it like it is. Every now and then he spews promoter-speak, but most of the time it’s readily apparent that he’s bullshitting. I think this is one of those times and as hardcore fans we have to recognize that as part of the business, and not chastise the shit out of the guy.
wait
if Fitch fights Ellenberger, who does Condit get to fight that isn’t a step down :(
Cage Potato puts this shit in perspective:
I wonder if the UFC will continue to throw him guys outside of the top 10 until he manages to finish one of them. Since Ellenberger is a skilled wrestler who’s only been stopped once in 28 fights (a 2007 submission loss to Delson Heleno), it’s unlikely that this will be the fight that breaks Fitch’s streak.
Basically
The UFC is going to wait until Fitch matches the longest UFC win streak again, or the longest for a WW, or the longest for a non-title holder…then they will at least be able to use that in the marketing of the Fitch-GSP rematch.
CPG
j chrizzy just throw askren in there
then all three can hug it out
You must defeat me to stand a chance.
This should be a good fight. Ellenberger is damn tough.
