Scott Coker Talks Upcoming Fights: Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki 2
• Coker suggested Robbie Lawler could get a title shot against middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza if Lawler defeats Matt Lindland on Dec. 4. However, if Lindland wins, a rematch against Souza doesn’t sound likely: "I think if Robbie wins, I think that would be a great fight. Let’s just see what happens on December 4. Jacare, I know he wants to fight, get back in the cage. We’ll have him probably in the first quarter of [2011]. He definitely will be fighting."-- Check out the full interview with Scott Coker on Sherdog's The Savage Dog Show. (audio)
• Coker would like to promote Josh Thomson against Tatsuya Kawajiri in the U.S.
• Coker was impressed with Shinya Aoki’s win over Kawajiri. He said Aoki looked much more comfortable in a ring than he did in the cage against Gilbert Melendez. He’s working on a rematch between Melendez and Aoki that would take place in a ring on New Year’s Eve in Japan.
• Coker would like to match Brett Rogers against Lavar Johnson.

It is really just depending on Werdum getting better. There is a rematch between Fedor and Werdum, but I feel that Werdum deserves to fight Overeem for the Title. I personally think Fedor should fight Antonio Silva should he beat Valentijn Overeem, or Fedor could fight Josh Barnett. I would like to see Fedor avenge his loss, but that would leave Overeem not fighting MMA for a while unless Overeem fights someone else in Strikeforce, but Overeem said that he won’t fight anyone besides Werdum and Fedor.

cuz the first was sooooooo exciting!
"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

Because Dream lent Aoki to fight Gil during Strikeforce’s last doomed CBS show.
So as a show of good faith for their co-promotion agreement, they are lending him back for a rematch for their NYE show

Part this, and part the belief that perhaps fighting in a ring will give Aoki more of an advantage than he had last time.
I’m still not interested, though obviously I’ll watch it. lol

Aoki has won his last three…
Win Yokthai Sithoar Submission (Keylock) Deep – 50 Impact 10/24/2010 1 1:00
Win Marcus Aurelio Decision (Unanimous) Dream – Dream 16 9/25/2010 2 5:00
Win Tatsuya Kawajiri Submission (Achilles Lock) Dream – Dream 15 7/10/2010 1 1:53
I can make a better case for Cain vs. Lesnar 2 than
Aoki vs. Melendez 2.

Winning 3 in a row (especially with one being against Sithoar who had never had a MMA match) still doesn’t scream rematch with the guy who completely dominated him. Not a guy who beat him, a guy who dominated him from start to finish.

Am I the only one that actually wants to see Aoki/Melendez 2?
That New Year’s show in Japan is gonna need some star power. They be strugglin’.
The way Rebney has handled the Alvarez/Melendez thing has really rubbed me wrong and I don’t want to see Melendez/Thompson 3. So yeah, I ay go ahead and return that favor.
am I the only one interested in seeing
Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leitas 2?

It would either be a quick KO or a sloppy gasfest, and I'd bet good money on the latter.

I'm not sure which I'd put my money on, but yes.
As for Thomson-Kawajiri, it really does make me wonder about what exactly Strikeforce is doing here. I would relate it to my comments about Melendez-Aoki 2, but that seems to have disappeared.

I guess they're attempting to build the Melendez/Thomson rubber match?
Either that or Strikeforce is hoping that someone derails Thomson so they can justify putting someone different in front of Melendez, although I’d say a match with Kawajiri would be even less compelling than a Thomson rubber match. The Aoki fight is for all intents and purposes a placeholder match for Melendez.

I would assume they're at least somewhat comfortable with any of the possible outcomes..
So I definitely think that either end would have to be considered. The matchmaking idea seems pretty straightforward.
I guess the other stuff that I’m personally curious about – an assessment of DREAM’s viability down the road, particularly from the perspective of an American organization working alongside them – is somewhat external to these potential matches.

The Lavar Johnson vs. Brett Rogers fight sounds great.
Instant fireworks
Coker was impressed with Shinya Aoki’s win over Kawajiri. He said Aoki looked much more comfortable in a ring than he did in the cage against Gilbert Melendez. He’s working on a rematch between Melendez and Aoki that would take place in a ring on New Year’s Eve in Japan.
Looking forward to that!! That card and Edgar / Maynard the same weekend… Mmmm…. If I am not in the hospital, I will be in MMA heaven!!!
Also, I don’t think there really isn’t a ton for Coker / Strikeforce to lose if Gil were to lose oversees. Really is is just a select few of the hardcore fan nut jobs like the BE night crew that will be watching and even if he loses, we aren’t about to stop watching Gil. The casual fans won’t even know what happened.
Aoki/Melendez 2 in Japan sounds like a great fight
I think Aoki will win this fight. The ring and the Japanese rules will have greater impact on this fight than most people expect.
aokie/melendez 2 is so uninteresting i could not even desrcibe it. especially when there are better fights out there for gilbert like eddie alvarez, kj noons, jz or even thomson part 3 since he los tthe first one and the rematch was a classic.
so many good matchups possible for strikeforce if they ever get their shit together.
1) This wouldn’t be a Strikeforce fight, it would be overseas.
2) Strikeforce can’t continually borrow Dream fighters with out sending theirs oversees.
Exactly. Plus they’ve been saying for months that Gilbert would have to go to Japan and fight Aoki so I wonder why people are acting surprise. And I, for one, am curious to see it if the ring, pants, and rules make any sort of difference this time.
I wonder if he even wears the pants.
He hasn’t worn the pants since the loss to Gil and is intent on proving he doesn’t need them.
It’s not surprise for me, it’s more just my thinking he would have a few more impressive wins under his belt before the rematch. Not that Kawajiri and Aurelio aren’t impressive, just that I figured it would be further down the road where they might sell it as more competitive than the last.

I am interested in seeing the difference the ring and the rules make more that anything else.
I don’t really see either fighter evolving a ton past where they are now.
I agree with all of that.
I just expected them to wait a bit longer so they could actually hype the fight a bit. I guess since it would be happening in Japan they won’t have to hype it much since it is Aoki competiting and trying to avenge a loss, but still.
At least the talk of Thompson / Kawajiri is fun.
by Empty Thoughts on Nov 1, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay wait...
Aoki is better than Noons or Thompson, he beat Eddie and JZ.
So how are those all better fights? Aoki is clearly a better fighter when he is in Japan.

Im surprised at the amount of hate for Aoki/Melendez 2
When these guys first met, Aoki was ranked #2 in the world, and some lists have Gil in that spot currently. Since their first fight Aoki has run off 3 straight and earned his rematch. This is the biggest fight of his career IMO, representing Japanese MMA as its biggest star on the biggest night of fights in Japan this year at a time when the whole scene could really use a star to rally around. Shinya said the first time around that a loss would make Japan “a colony of the US” in terms of MMA. For this fight, the rematch in his backyard, I think that’s actually true.
This is a huge fight people. Its also win/win for SF and Coker’ unlike the Melendez/Alvarez co promoted fight.

YES
Thomson-Kawajiri definitely interests me. Makes a solid match to determine the #1 contender. I see Crusher getting the W. Kawajiri was robbed in his fight with Gil so a rematch would be nice.
With all the talk about how Coker has absolutely nothing to gain from dealing with Bellator, his lightweight champs next two fights are going to be rematches. That Alvarez fight, especially if Melendez wins, would be huge for him.

Not bad but...
I don’t see anything that say’s Aoki can win other than if goes to a decision and the judges gift him a win.
I definitely want to see Kawajiri against Thomson.
Their styles make for an exciting matchup and it’d be good to see Kawajiri avenge JZ who, according to most folks, was robbed against Thomson.

Great ideas here, I hope they can put them together. I especially like Lavar vs Rogers. The earth might shake with the punches that’ll be thrown in that one.
