WEC 51 ratings up more than 50 percent

MMA Junkie reports that ratings for WEC 51 were up 54 percent from WEC 50. Last Thursday’s show out of Broomfield, Colorado garnered 486,000 viewers. The event featuring Jose Aldo versus Manny Gamburyan received a 0.49 household rating.

Not much to add beyond that (see http://mmapayout.com/2010/10/wec-51-ratings/ for additional commentary).  Just saw these reports on other sites through the week and surprised not to see it mentioned on BE yet so thought I'd share.

That response does not go against the overuse of the word ‘meme’ meme though.

LOL

Less than half of what the IFL was drawing in a bad week in 2007. This is treading water at best.

Go Josay!

I'd say it was a combination of Varner/Cerrone II and Jose Aldo

WEC always pulls in better ratings for shows that feature rematches of really good fights and I’m sure Jose got a few news fans after dismantling Faber. Plus Manny was coming off a nice upset win and Garcia and Jung were coming off of the “fight of the decade”.

The WEC reallys needs Cruz to lose the bantamweight title so they headline cards with bantamweight title fights. They don’t have enough titles to put it as the co-main event or enough draws to prop it up with a more interesting undercard all the time. Faber would be the best option but Torres(should he win the obvious superfight with Faber) or even Jorgenson(especially with a win over Faber or Torres) would be an improvement.

Dunno if this is good or bad. Glad the WEC is doing well so it sticks round but the better it does the less chance of seeing Aldo in the UFC which sucks.

Mir, Aldo , Axe Murderer , Bones, Nightmare

If i got tied to a chair in a room with nothing but a TV and was forced to watch one thing for the rest of my life, it would be the WEC.

Combination of factors

1) On a Thursday, not a Saturday. Thurs is a big TV watching night, Sat, not so much.
2) Started at the tail end of Bellator’s broadcast, so fans attention wasn’t divided between two events. In fact, it was probably a good build up.

Dude what the hell are you talking about? The ratings are up. If anything it would have done better on Saturday because there wouldn’t have had tv shows to compete against. And no one watches Bellator because FSN doesn’t show it anywhere. Learn how to read.

um.

You’re the one that needs some reading comprehension, hoss, not I. I agreed with the premise, and stated two reasons why. Thursday IS a bigger TV watching night, which is part of the reason ratings were up. They were NOT competing vs another MMA contest, and in fact, followed the ending of another small promotion generally meant they could get good buzz off of that.

Work with me here, son.

That makes no sense. I guarantee you more people would wanna watch the office and Sunny than the WEC. Saturday nights are alright for fightin. Not weekdays because people watch other shit, moron.

ok first of all

flagged for just being a donkey for no apparent reason. You can have a conversation without opening it with “learn to read” when you completely misread what I was saying and then following that up with random name calling. You should try it some time.

Secondly, you should go learn something about TV viewing habits. There’s tons of reading material out there. Google a few things before you start talking about subjects you’ve clearly never done any research about. I’ll repeat some shit i JUST SAID and elaborate on it because you’ve clearly never thought about it. People, especially younger people, do not watch TV on Saturday nights. They are out drinking, partying, hanging out. For a big UFC PPV those plans are often the same, but the casual fan will just as often choose to skip a WEC card on VS to spend a nice fall evening out with buddies at the college football game/bar/frat/date with the girlfriend who isn’t into MMA, etc. Young working professionals often like to have a social life and only get 2 days a week to do it in. Unless they are a die-hard, they will not give up the best opportunity of the week to sit in front of a TV at home.

Thursday night is much less of a party night, especially for the post-college but still under 35 working crowd that makes up a big portion of this demographic. It is a stay-at-home night and watch TV. There’s a decent chance they don’t even know about the card unless they come across it flipping channels and go “oh shit lemme watch this”. Remember, this isn’t the UFC.

That is probably a big reason why this particular card got some extra eyes.

YES!

Michael Robinson leads the Seahawks in completion percentage, yards-per-attempt, and QB rating.

Jose

I know that WEC was the Faber promotion, but Jose Aldo is so good and has such a high finishing rate that he could really put up some solid ratings. Of course if Aldo could be the same sort of fighter at 155 he could really do wonders for ratings in the UFC.

Aldo is so good and has such a high finishing rate

The guys that he hasn’t been able to finish should get some kind of special prize just because of that.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

Untill he pulls an Anderson Silva and just starts letting fights go to decision for no apparent reason

Silva has only had like 1 legitimate decision win (and 2 where he gave up after 3 rounds) in his career.

What is with that?

I’m used to coming to BE and seeing ratings for MMA events on certain channels. Most of the time it is to point out falling ratings but I would assume on a slow week we would see the numbers posted. Is BE showing a bias towards the negative?

by Crazynutts on Oct 10, 2010 1:50 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure why people are impressed the numbers are still

pathetic for how stacked this card was.

Read a good article over at InsideFights about it:
http://insidefights.com/2010/10/06/wec-51-viewing-figures-are-a-disgrace-not-a-triumph/

It’s like people are using the Bellator spin… “ratings are up __%!!” but the ratings are still pretty bad.
