Shinya Aoki Talks the UFC, Favourite Fighters and More

Promoted to the Front Page by Kid Nate.

In September 2010 I visited Japan. There, I met Dan Herbertson and Dean Marchand. Together we visited some of our favourite MMA stars to talk with them and shoot video.

This is Shinya Aoki, Dream lightweight champion.

We spoke of a lot of things, some of which are no longer relevant due to the time that has passed since the interview. Aoki himself was also a little hesitant, as he is known to be with a lot of western media. However, once the interview was 'over', he seemed to really loosen up and we had a good discussion about Japanese and American MMA, how much he loves the UFC, who is favourite fighters are and his opinion on 'wrestle-boxers'.

I hope Western fans will enjoy seeing another side of Aoki. Once we began talking about MMA, it was clear that he was very passionate and knowledgeable on the subject.

Aoki

is one of my favorite fighters.
good post.

Very good

Completely agree with most of what he said about US MMA and it’s fighters, nice interview.

Awesome interview.

Really interesting hearing his take on the lightweight division. If he was American he would have included himself in his top 4. Very humble.

Big Aoki fan here, but humble he is not.

He has two personalities. The one he shows to the media, and his actual personality. We’ll never know…

I tend to believe it’s the one we saw flipping off the world after breaking Hirota’s arm.

Aoki

Rocks. Period. I’d support him in a BJ/AOKI fight. I don’t even care.

an independent observation…
interesting his talk about fights where one player holds down another being boring… He definitely played the Aurelio fight pretty safe!

He did, but as I recall he did deal some damage from top position. Though I’d love to see him go for some spectacular submissions, it was far from lay and pray.

Then Melendez, Alvarez, and Edgar in no particular order.

Gray Maynard! He's a...good wrestler.

Aoki is awesome, and I agree with his top four. You’d have to add Maynard in there too, just because the current rules favor him so much.

i have an unrelated question.

Why do foreigners get a yellow card just for being part of Dream competitions?

by Rocejize on Oct 8, 2010 2:57 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

because of Japan’s latent racism / xenephobia.
oh wait, you already knew that?

Yeah...

I’ve noticed that too. Wonder if the failure to pay fighters falls along similar lines?

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

Japan x USA

Japanese MMA mentality is way much better than the americans ! I mean trying to finish the fight via KO/Submission is what scores more points with the judges and with the fans and also with yourself ( if you are a true FIGHTER, AND NOT SOME BORING WRESTLER ) !

But in USA being a boring wrestler is what wins a fight, trying not to be submited and not taking damage is what they look at as a winer, and that makes no sense at all !

by Demordio on Oct 9, 2010 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

One word: helplessness. It’s a scary fucking thing. In MMA it takes place when you’re striking with AS and when you’re getting mugged by a wrestler. There’s no “I got caught, he got lucky, butterfly effect”. If you’d knew the claustrofobic feeling when someone holds you and you can’t do shit about it, you’d rather get KO’d or submitted. It’s a war motherfuckers, every move is permissible, if you can’t stop it, you’re a sucker.

"...I don't want to save the World, I don't even want to save me. We're so boring that we don't event want to save ourselves...There's nothing left to say, we're so fucking boring. Let it die I say. Let there be a new beginning...It's awful. Goodnight"

This is the side of the argument I will always land on

I like finishes as much as anyone, and I do think wrestlers could do more to finish fights, but the bottom line for me will always be that it is the losing fighter’s responsibility to turn the fight around. If top control is beating you, do something about it.
