Damn this is a sweet card so far!

They need to put these high profile fights on the nye card if gray and Edgar are headlining silva and belfort can have a decent co-main event and a good fight card and still sell it vs a card that most people think should b free on spike with the lw title headlined

by malito3og3 on Oct 5, 2010 3:48 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Good co main but it won’t sell with Edgar and gray headlining they need a huge stacked card or lower the ppv price

Ima huge frankie fan and going to buy the ppv regardless but they need a good stacked card to start the yr and Edgar and gray isn’t top quality that everyone wants to buy unless it’s a good card

by malito3og3 on Oct 5, 2010 4:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That was kinda hard to read. Anyway, I think this fight IS top quality, the best wrestler and the best boxer at 155, and they are both extremely well rounded, one is undefeated and the other lost only to the man he is facing, and it’s for the title. That’s top quality. Too bad people hate both fighters even though I don’t know why they hate Edgar yet.

Buy the card for yourself and enjoy. Do you need a card to sell a million buys to justify your own enjoyment?

I dont feel like frankie ever tries to hurt anyone.

If i wanted to watch someone jab their way to a title I would buy Pretty Boy Floyd PPVs . I like to actually see a “fight”, thats why I started watching the UFC , Pride and so on. I like the old school rules/ pride and dream rules. But i am just a blood thirsty savage so take it for what its worth.
With the lay & pray , bad judging , and the cruz and frankie type of point fighting it definitely isn’t “As real as it gets”.

I just think gray and Frankie should do more to finish. I actually liked Grays fight against Kenny. I also love the way Shields fights. Great take downs and constantly sub hunting = one happy me :-).I dont think he has been in a boring fight in years (Okami maybe?) its the intent to finish I feel they are missing. frankie ,Sonnen and gray play it too safe for my liking.

Clearly a combined record of 23-1 is not top quality MMA.

I get the complaints about 119, that wasn’t a great PPV card even on paper. But this is a UFC title fight. Not interim title, not some new thing being created out of nothingness, it’s a goddamn UFC lightweight title defense. How is that not an adequate headliner? Because Frankie “I have more wins and fewer losses than BJ Penn at lightweight and oh yeah I just beat the shit out of BJ Penn at lightweight twice in a row” Edgar isn’t BJ Penn?

And yes, that’s Edgar’s new nickname. Buffer has to say the whole thing.

MMA fans suck

There I said it.

Not all of them but a very large portion, if not the majority of MMA fans suck at being fans. Their quick to shit on everything, they talk like the fights shouldn’t even take place they’re so sure of the accepted pecking order, they openly shit all over fighters, coaches, writers, promoters, promotions with little to no regard for rational, reasonable arguments, they tear down the record of every fighters, claiming everyone has fought no one.

Frankie Edgar versus Gray Maynard is a great and rare fight in the small world of MMA: A clear cut undisputed champion facing a clear cut number one contender. There’s one loss between the two of them and it’s the champion losing to the challenger. They are both incredibly talented high level, high skill fighters.

I hate to pull the “real MMA fan” card, but if you’re a true fan of this sport, you’re excited for this fight.

dude i was a fan during UFC 1

I was a fan during Pride.
and I am a fan now.
If you like fighters to decide they are fighting for a decision before they ever step in the cage that’s your business. I think its lame and against the principals The UFC was established on.
I don’t rag on you for liking people that seem to be incapable of finishing a fight.
So don’t break my balls about not liking how they “play the game of mma” instead of fucking fight.

Aww muffin

Are your feelings hurt? How many of those things I accused bad fans of doing are you guilty of?

If MMA is a sport, then the objective is to have the best face the best. Edgar/Maynard is just that.

The F in UFC doesn’t stand for finishing. If you think that’s the only mark of a good fight than perhaps this isn’t for you, because as the sport grows and the talent gap shrinks, there will be fewer finishes at the highest levels. There’s plenty of ally fights that end with one guy laying on the ground unconscious, maybe that’s more your speed.

and before i retort i would just like to thank you for calling me Muffin. My grammy calls me that .It was a nice gesture. Thank you. lol
So we can both agree the “f” doesn’t stand for finishing. It does however stand for fighting. Its not the UDC either. I don’t have a problem with decisions as long there is a strong repeated effort to finish. I feel like both gray and frankie (and Sonnen for that matter he bragged that he was gonna fight Anderson for 25 mins)are lacking in their effort to finish. Nog vs. Couture , Sherk vs. Dunham(he got robbed) and cro cop vs fedor were all great fights ending in decision. The difference in those vs say gray’s matches, gray doesnt try to finish enough.

rec'd for handling the smugness well.

I think some fans of this sport can be insecure about its roots and how that makes them look. yeah, Gray and Frankie are #1 and #2 in the promotion right now, and they’re great athletes, and even great fighters within the context of the ruleset here. but that doesn’t mean you’re not a fan of martial arts, combat sports, or this particular sport just because you actually want to see the guys fight with a sense of urgency.

most fighting styles we see in the octagon are not taught with the notion that bells and judges in some fashion are going to ultimately determine the victor. understanding that and approaching the sport with that viewpoint doesn’t make one a savage or fake fan, not any more than an appreciation for point fighting, control over damage, and an abundance of patience in the cage will make you an educated or real fan (nor will it present the sport as more acceptable to the mainstream).

Those make better sense ranking wise and considering that Franklin and Forest probably won’t make another title run.

BUT

The current line up makes sense by rewarding two company men with a “real” shot at creating a legitimate title shot with one more win after that match up.

Hell could do the winners of Franklin/Griffen, Bader/Jones, or Rampage/Machida for the next title shot.

Shogun was coming off an injury, sure Forrest beat him but I bet it would be a different fight today. Rampage isn’t as mentally tough as Franklin either. Franklin won’t get discouraged if things don’t go his way and won’t rely on a knock out left hook. I think Franklin is more suited for winning decisions than Rampage is and that is the type of fight Forrest always has.

If Lyoto got to keep his title and give a rematch then Rampage damn sure did, Griffin landed some damaging leg kicks but it wasn’t like he ran away with that fight and I had razor thin decision for Quinton being that he was the champ and he wasn’t “beaten”.

all true

but there are a lot of buts to it -

he arguably lost against Rampage (according to many armchair judges, so we know what that’s worth)

he beat Rua when the poor bastard was suffering one of the worst cases of ring rust in history.

consequently, he’s probably overvalued in the rankings.

His last win, splitting a decision against the notoriously washed up Tito Ortiz is not what anyone would call legendary.

All that said, he’s a smart guy and may yet learn some new things for his bag of tricks.

New champion trying to avenge his only loss vs. undefeated guy that just beat Kenny Florian = meh. I just can’t wrap my head around that.

Well then why are we having the fight?

You’ve got it figured out. Send Frankie an email and that way he can mail the belt out to Gray and we can avoid the whole thing right?

You don’t want to watch two of the best fighters in the world fight, that’s your problem, I personally look forward to it.

There are LOTS of matchups I want to see in the UFC.

Edgar vs. Maynard is at the bottom of the list though.

by Polyhedron on Oct 5, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It's meh exclusively because of Maynard

Edgar vs. Florian would’ve been great.

It is a shame. Almost tragic that we're stuck with a rematch.

I think I’m rooting for Edgar 100%. Maynard as a champ is horrifying.

It's a rematch of Frankie's only loss!

Who’s a more compelling opponent for the champ than the only man to ever beat him in a fight?

I can't think of a better-deserved title shot at LW, but I can't say I'm overly excited - their first fight bored me.

That being said, I’m totally going watch it, and look forward to seeing if Edgar can avenge his loss.

Maybe if Maynard beats Edgar then we can get Edgar vs. Florian.

They have fighting styles that are not particularly exciting

They’re both very good at what they do, it’s just that not a lot of people want to watch what they do.

Yeah but there were elite teams in the NFC that year

No one stands out this season. Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NY Jets, Texans, even the Patriots right now than either the NFC East or West.

Only the Falcons, Packers, and I guess the Saints are worth a damn in this conference…and I’m a Seahawks fan so I’m used to poor divisional play, never mind conference.

this will be a great card.

Already excited about it, hope Rich pulls a win, this is a good start to test if he truly belongs with the glamour division of the UFC.

I think the fight is out of Forrest, he isn’t hungry enough to compete in the LHW division anymore.

There is no other division like the light heavyweight division in the UFC, its the best hands down.

Nice!

A winnable fight for both guys, I’ll be looking forward to it.

Rich Franklin wins this one.

Griffen has been out too long and he just isn’t as well rounded as Franklin is. I see Franklin picking him apart and winning an entertaining decision.

sick fight on a sick card

i think griffin pulls it off, hes bigger and stronger and i actually think hes gonna knock him out

Elvis Sinosic I believe.

But I am a little concerned about Franklin’s striking defense. He is getting easier and easier to hit.

I’m personally a very big fan of Forrest. This is a great great fight, with both guys being well rounded in almost all aspects of the game. That being said both of these guys aren’t known for their overwhelming power, and even though Franklin put Liddell away, I don’t see the same outcome in this fight. I’ll go with Forrest by a split decision. Tough fight, but I have to root for Forrest. But then again I’m biased.

DON'T JINX IT!

West coast sucks a dick. 2Pac had nothing on Big and Easy E and Magic Johnson got HIV cause West Coast broads are dirty as hell. I wish I was from New Jersey because the shitty bagels and pizza I have out here are making my butthole bleed.

Just double checking

but the order so far for LHW is- Rua vs. Evans (most likely late February/March/early April) with the Rampage/Machida winner getting the next shot?

With 127 being in February, the timing would be right for the winners of Bader/Jones and Franklin/Forrest to square off for the next title shot after the winner Rampage/Machida, but that is planning it out pretty far ahead.

by Balrog on Oct 5, 2010 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

They usually don't give title shots to guys coming with 1-1 records in their last two wins

It has happened, but AFAIK only when the champ has cleaned out the division. I think that the winner of Jones-Bader gets the title shot.

by Magaca on Oct 5, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I was just checking if there had been any unofficial/official word about this from the UFC, I’ll probably write a fanpost about my thoughts on the title scene for LHW later.

by Balrog on Oct 6, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

These two are very similar fighters. Both use kicks effectively, and both throw combinations instead of just single punches regularly. This fight will probably not hit the floor, but both have extremely underrated BJJ skills. Also, they are both UFC fan favorites. Griffin has the size and reach advantage though. I have wanted to see this fight for a while, and I am glad that they are finally putting on PPV.

True

Everyone seems to have forgotten that the guy puts on seriously awesome fights. I mean who cares if he got embarrassed by Silva, this is gonna be a great fight whoever wins. I’m a big Forrest fan, but I never really care about the outcome of his fights, he just always brings it.
