Strikeforce Champ Gilbert Melendez Continues To Push for Eddie Alvarez Bout
Given the on-going dust up between Bellator's Bjorn Rebney and Strikeforce boss Scott Coker about cross-promotional fights and who texted whom, it's easy to forget the role played by Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez.
Melendez went on HDNet's Inside MMA in June and said he'd like to fight Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez. At that point, Bellator had been campaigning for the bout via press release for a month or two.
Melendez went on Sherdog radio this week and poured more gasoline on the fire:
"I think we're getting warmer. You guys are talking about it. Everyone's talking about it," Melendez said Wednesday during a "Savage Dog Show" interview on the Sherdog Radio Network. "Someone's going to get backed into a corner. We're going to figure out why it's not happening eventually, and that person's probably going to be cornered in and they're probably going to have to give in. Because everyone seems like they're up for it. Bjorn, Scott, Eddie and I. So there's something going on where we can't come to an agreement. I think eventually it's going to come out, and with media and everyone talking about it, I think we're getting a lot closer and a lot warmer."
...
"Obviously Strikeforce is the bigger promotion than Bellator," Melendez said. "That could be it. That does seem like it. I'm not sure if it's [Coker] or what, but I know Scott has co-promoted before. I think if things make sense, it can work out. But yeah, you tell me [what's preventing the fight]. If you know something I don't know, let me know."
...
"It would mean the world to me," he said. "That's my ultimate goal, to be number one in the world at 155. If I get there, I'll be very happy. I've been working hard and I want to beat all these big names. Eddie Alvarez is one of them. I'm technically ranked above him in the rankings and I still want to fight the guy because I know he's a tougher matchup. I'm not going to heel hook him in one minute like Shinya Aoki. I know that's not what's going to happen. It's going to be a battle, it's going to be a war. I'm not OK with just having the journalists put me number two. I really want to prove it myself. I want to beat the one through 10 on my own. I really want to beat them all."
...
"If I'm still with Strikeforce, I think that fight does need to happen," Melendez said. "The only other way is if I move on and somehow I'm in the UFC fighting out there. If I beat Josh Thomson again, if I beat Shinya again, it's not really going to do nothing for my status or to make my spot go up. ... That's why I want this fight."
This interview shows what a bad spot Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker finds himself in. He's caught between Bellator trying to come up under him, wanting to worm their way onto Showtime (just like Coker wormed his way onto Showtime via co-promoting with EliteXC) and signing fighters he'd like to have and his own top fighters looking for challenges he can't provide.
Gilbert Melendez is topped out in Strikeforce. He's already fought Josh Thomson twice. As great as Thomson is, winning the rubber match against him is a high-risk, low-reward proposition for Melendez. Thomson is criminally underrated at #17 on the USAT/SBN Consensus MMA Rankings whereas Alvarez is a nice juicy #6.
Melendez is expected to fight next in Japan against DREAM champ #5 Shinya Aoki on FEG's New Year's Dynamite!! show. Scott Coker needs to show his champ that he can continue to grow while fighting for Strikeforce. Outside of Eddie Alvarez, Melendez' best fights are all in the UFC.

Cocker can't seem to win in this situation.

Either sign the fight to maximize the talents of your fighter and make the fans happy. Or showcase Bellator fighters on Showtime.
What does Scott Cocker do in a situation like this?

2010 sucks for Coker
First his HW’s (Their best division) don’t wanna fight.) Then his big MW buy (Hendo) doesn’t perform at all. Then 2 of his best LHW’s (Moussasi and King Month) lose. Then the scrap pack jump a man on national television. Fuck guy can’t get a break.

I don’t think it’s so much that Coker can’t get a break but he refuses to get his own house in order
As a promoter he shouldn’t be letting so many of his fighters that work for him call the shots.
The man’s too nice and at least to me, he seems to let all his guys walk all over him

True
I think he is pretty soft. But I still feel sorry for the guy. For all his faults though, he does provide great fights so I would like to hope he doesn’t fail.

Scott is just trying to protect his brand.
Melendez could lose to Alvarez… then Scott is left with a champ in name only. Lose-Lose for him. I don’t blame him for trying to not make the fight.
Scott has been outmaneuvered at every turn by Bellator. Even his champ is calling him out for not making the fight. Sucks to be you, Scott.

I think this is spot on
Outside of Eddie, Melendez doesn’t have much real competition. I thought shinya was overrated, although smashing him so completely was impressive. But honsestly, their isn’t much else for him. I dony believe he deserves a Top 3 ranking even with beating Eddie, but Eddie and a good UFC win (over, say, Gomi or Sherk or Florian) would definitely do it.

It’s really hard to gauge how good Gilbert is with the lack of challenges in Strikeforce
Gilbert can have some exciting matches against Thompson, JZ and KJ Noons, but really, where does he go from there if he stays in Strikeforce?
At the risk of losing another fighter to the UFC, maybe Coker should book this match to keep one of his top fighters happy

That’s why I feel a good UFC win would raise his stock. no doubt he is good. But how could is he is the question. A Florian or Sherk win would tell alot

Good point
Gil has always been(Coker even admitted as much) one of Strikeforce’s most LOYAL employees and now even he has wanderlust for the UFC. I think it’s best to book the match.
Google Ron Paul!
Sorry Gil but you won't be #1 even if you do beat Eddie
Gotta beat the champ of the best LW division in the best organization to do that.

…I doubt Melendez was implying that by what he said.

The thing holding this fight back isn't Coker or Rebney
It is the TV contracts. Bjorn Rebney would be dumb to let his biggest asset fight in another org and on a different channel. Same goes for Coker. Showtime and CBS would insist the fight take place on Showtime or CBS. While Fos Sports Net would insist the fight take place in a Bellator cage on Fox Sports Net.
I only see these men fighting in the UFC.
If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?
Except Bellator is currently (as far as we can tell) in the land of no TV contract. I really don’t think they would sit on the news this long if the arrangements and plan for season 4 and beyond was actually in place. They have a ton of fighters under contract, that are going to be looking for fights and to know what the details are. If the details existed, they would be out.
That’s not true. Rebney would kill to be on Showtime.

i wouldn't say Josh is criminally underrated

He used to be
I feel like his injuries have taken him down a notch. He at least used to be one of the very best in the world, even though his record doesn’t show it.

Yeah
Who should he be ranked over that he’s not?

well
there’s #15 Hirota coming off a loss, no wins over currently ranked opponents #14 Ben Henderson — zero wins over currently ranked opponents and #13 Gomi — other than the win over Tyson Griffin, hasn’t done much in a long long time
so I’d jump Thomson at least 3 spots if i did rankings

well i didn't actually say criminally under-ranked
I said criminally underrated. Thomson is a top lightweight and isn’t regarded as such.

josh still has a win over gil
you’d think he would want that rubber match just as bad as josh, its not like he finished him in their last fight

He didn’t finish, but I distinctly remember Melendez beating the shit out of Thomson.

Lots of SF’s problems all boil down to the same thing in my mind, lack of long term planning.
A few weeks ago he was able to throw a little water on this fire by saying that Eddie had a fight coming up, but Eddie destroyed Heurta, so now the fire is raging again. They should have taken the time that excuse bought him (or any of the time between nashville and now) and gotten a fight for melendez. that’s easier said then done, since they don’t really have a great fight to give melendez, but that is all part of the same bigger problem.
Coker did not worm his way onto Showtime.
The Elite/SF co-promotion was the result of a legal battle over Frank Shamrock’s contracts. SF had a contract that gave them Frank’s next bout, but Frank also signed with Elite and was trying to fight for them instead.
The settlement called for two co-promoted cards. During the first, bad blood was created when Shaw talked to Cung Le about signing with Elite. Le was under contract to SF.
While I thik Copker has done a good job in the past, more and more it feels as though he is in over his head. No long-term planning, poor promotion and marketing, poor time management during events, inability to control or influence many of his fighters… the list goes on.
Bellator is wisly positioning themselves as the underdog org that wants to prove they have the best fighters. From a business point of view, it makes little sense for Coker to work with them. But Bellator and ever Gilbert is making SF look bad.
If they had not stupidly made Noons/Diaz, they would have a contender in Noons. But it made more sense to have him move up to 170 and get killed by Nick.
FUCK, I gotta write one for Gilbert TOO

Strikeforce's LW division is like the cast of "Jersey Shore"
The same 7 people getting it on with each other.
Bjorn is shady. If Coker says he hasn't gotten texts and doesn't want to negotiate through the media
and Bjorn tries to embarass Coker into doing business with him. This guy is a weirdo Coker needs to get tough and tell him he’ll put together those fights in a couple of months when Bellator folds from lack of tv deal and he buys up all his talented fighters
