Todd Duffee Talks About Being Cut by the UFC

Photo by Tracy Lee via Combat Lifestyle.

Todd Duffee has had a bad year. He lost his only fight to Mike Russow in spectacular fashion at UFC 114 after dominating the Chicago cop for 2.5 rounds. His father passed away. Adding insult to that injury, he got cut from the UFC.

Sherdog caught up with Duffee and got some quotes:

"Dana never actually talked to me. The only time he talked to me was after my first fight [in the UFC], and he publicly went out and said that I had a good attitude," says Duffee. "I gave up my entire life [to be a fighter]. The thing that was insulting to me was when he said that he didn't know if I wanted to be in the UFC."
...
"My dad was dying, and I spent my dad's last five months preparing for a fight. I didn't go visit my dad once. I was focused on one thing and one thing only, and that's how I've trained my entire career. So that kind of hurt my feelings," says Duffee. "It was kind of hard to swallow when I heard that someone could have that kind of misconception about me, especially someone who has that much control over what I'm trying to do with my life. With a snap of someone's fingers, everything you've worked so hard for goes down the sh--ter."
...
"I never personally agreed to [fight Madsen]; my manager did. They all really wanted that fight for me because it was on the Brock [Lesnar] card. I was just asking for a couple of weeks to see if I could get healthy to take that fight," says Duffee. "I just didn't feel comfortable taking a fight injured in hopes that I'll be able to get ready. Once I got cut, I was on set for like a week before I signed [the movie contract], just in case I got a phone call [from the UFC] saying, ‘Hey, let's get you a new contract. Let's get you back in the UFC.'"

Duffee is still nursing an injured knee and hoping to avoid surgery. He says he has not yet received any offers from other fight promotions.

I would love to see Duffee against Cain

or Carwin sometime down the line. He’d be a good striking test for Brock too

I said down the line.

And seriously. He LOST to Mike Russow? Or he let the guy stick around for 3 rounds. I think there is a difference between absolutely battering someone and getting knocked out like he did and going and getting your butt kicked over 3 rounds.

Down the line, I mean after maybe 7 or so fights, when he is more experienced. And I do think Cain and JDS would both beat him. So there.

He not only lost, but lost in the most definitive way possible

Getting finished is the final word in losing. It doesn’t matter if you dominate your opponent for 14 or 24 minutes beforehand. If he manages to separate you from your consciousness or forces you to tap, you lost in a way more definitive than everyone who’s lost to Jon Fitch in the past 3 years. See also: Sonnen, Chael.

This is not really a comment on Duffee, who I think got a raw deal, but on this weird meme among MMA fans about guys not really losing when they get stopped.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Oct 31, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I agree with you that he lost

but to suggest that loss means he is got no talent or is overrated, is something. We simply don’t know enough about this man or his true potential. It’s funny how MMA fans wanted Chael to get a rematch (title shot) against Silva but Todd Duffee is all of a sudden a bum who can’t fight.

Soooo, no one wants to see Silva/Sonnen II then right?

I mean Sonnen lost in the most “definitive way possible”. Or Lesnar/Carwin II? Right?

Where did I even suggest that?

Sonnen lost, completely, totally and without question. There was no controversy, no second guessing. He tapped. He said he tapped. And we all saw him tap.

Before he tapped, he demonstrated that he has the tools to give Silva a hell of a fight, and would have a good shot to win in a rematch. The same is true for Carwin and Lesnar. But that Carwin and Sonnen had good showings in those fights doesn’t take away from the fact that they both lost.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Big Difference....

Chael proved he could give the best middleweight in the world a helluva fight and Duffee proved he could give Mike Russow a helluva fight.

Just sayin….

Arnold did the same thing when training for the Olympia back in the day

he talks about it in Pumping Iron. He said his mom called him from Austria and told him that his father had died, but he didn’t go back because he was so focused on his training. It’s crazy shit, and I wouldn’t have done it, but when you are that focused on getting to the top of your profession, that is the choice some make.

Surprise surprise. Anyone who bought Dana’s “he had a bad attitude” thing was a fool. Dana is a narcissist who only later justifies his actions with dumb excuses like that.

by frosnt1 on Oct 31, 2010 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

And how do we know Duffee is being truthful?

I’m not saying it’s impossible Dana is lying but your basically taking one mans word over another without any hard evidence from either.

Except Dana’s is easily spottable as a lie. Unless you’re suggesting that Duffee made up his father dying, or the fact that they haven’t even spoken.

I'm guessing there is a whole hell of a lot more to the story than just this.

Everyone, including Dana, knew that Duffee had a ton of star potential, even after the loss. I’m no Dana fanboy, but I’m guessing that he had some pretty compelling reasons to let him go. Dana’s not above being petty of course, but on the surface, Duffee had the ability to make him a lot of money, and Dana will set his issues aside for a payout every time.

by Manzanillos Cup on Oct 31, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

We will never know the rest of the story

Only Dana, Todd and their people know the truth. Obviously, Todd isn’t gonna own up to his end and Dana isn’t gonna admit he was wrong. I feel for Duffee but, at some point you have to let it go and move on with your life. The fact that he isn’t signed with another org says volumes. This lends credibilty to Dana and his statement. This could be a positive for Todd, he needs to use this as his focus and motivation. The fact that Todd isn’t signed also tells me, Duffee really wants to be in the UFC. Only time will tell.

Easy now placing all the blame on Dana hear lets not forget what Todd’s own manager Alex Davis had to say about what happend " Well, I’m not sure exactly what the problem or problems were.I tryed hard to avoid it, but Dana wasn’t listening. It’s unfortunate, but Todd’s a real ass."

Now I don’t know about you but that statement buy his own manager seems like Todd is some what to blame also ?

… after all, Dana is famously full of shit, but something about Duffee screams vindictive child to me. I feel for the guy and his loss, but I don’t buy his story.

by #1 piggy on Oct 31, 2010 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

Do you seriously think the worst thing that happened to Duffee over the last year was being cut by the UFC. “His father passed away. Worst of all, he was cut by the UFc.” ???

Please say this is a typo. Better yet, correct it. I think we can all agree that losing a parent is more devastating and much “worse” than losing a job.

I still don’t feel we have heard the full story on Duffee. There is more to him losing his job and it seems that whatever it is must be known throughout the industry since no one is making him an offer.

I just get the feeling we are working with less than all the facts.

Duffee showed even in the loss to Russow that he has a lot of potential. He was stuffing takedowns, utilizing a jab, and was light on his feet instead of flat-footed when he was pounding on Russow. There were holes in his game of course, but he still showed that he could be a top-tier heavyweight down the line.
I’m surprised that Strikeforce hasn’t picked him up, or even Bellator (which I don’t want him going to because he may get stuck there).

If I'm not mistaken,

I don’t think the UFC was making fun of him. They were talking about him having previously worked at a Dairy Queen, and he got mad and tweeted back something along the lines of “find a different way of marketing me.”

If thats what you’re even talking about.

THAT would be a reason to say fuck off to your dad on his deathbed. But even if that were the case for Todd, why would he address his dad as dying? This guy is a meathead who wants our sympathy.

by BeeTrain on Oct 31, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

It seems pretty low, but

we gotta keep in mind, we don’t know the whole story. He may not have known that his dad was on his deathbed…even if the signs were all there, denial is a mofo. I’ve seen it personally with my grandpa when my grandmother died, with me when my father died, and with friends too. These people had terminal diseases, and even though deep down we all knew it was inevitable, no one was prepared for the loss.

No matter what you do before someone you care about dies, you always have regrets. Maybe we all should think a little more before judging a major life-changing event someone goes through, from one little quote on an MMA site.
