Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: Chael Sonnen "Has Apologized"

I loved it. I had to congratulate (Wanderlei Silva), because he has the right attitude. Sonnen is a kid who does not know what he’s talking about, who thinks it’s cute to do this type of marketing. Sonnen is a guy who never practiced a martial art in his life. He doesn’t know what respect or leadership is. He never respected any teacher, so he said those things. He’s a guy who has no respect for anything. Wanderlei gave him an earful at the right time, and I was pleased. After the fight with Anderson, Sonnen has apologized for the comments he made toward us. I think marketing yourself is fine, but what he said indicated a real lack of respect toward us.-- Check out the full interview with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at Sherdog.com.

So Nog disrespects wrestling by saying it’s not a legit martial art in return?
by JeremyShane on Oct 3, 2010 10:45 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
It's not taught like a martial art
I train in boxing right now, and I practiced Tae Kwon Do for seven years, and there’s a big difference between how western fighting techniques and traditional eastern martial arts are taught. Those tenets of respect for elders and tradition and the art itself just aren’t baked into wrestling and boxing the way they are into eastern martial arts. Maybe the definition of what makes a “martial artist” is evolving, but to someone like Nog who has trained in traditional martial arts for so long, there’s a big difference.

it's first and foremost a sport, and not a martial art
Unlike just about any other martial art, wrestling does not deal primarily with either inflicting damage on your opponent and/or defending said damage. It’s a hugely effective attribute when combined with other things (submission and/or ground and pound, both of which would fall into the aforementioned categories), but on its own it’s not really a martial art. Not that you can’t argue the other way, but…
Either way I’m pretty sure the practical difference Nog was pointing out was that there isn’t the strong system of respect that you find in most martial arts.

I noticed that too
To me, a Martial Art is a Fighting Style. There’s just different forms of it. BJJ and Wrestling fall into the same category as Grappling. Still fighting someone just with different techniques. It’s a hard argument to make cause a lot of people don’t consider Boxing a martial art. It’s posssible (as what Monte Fisto said) that the difference is the lineage and history behind it and that certain martial arts have made a strong impact on culture and what not.
I also take Sonnen’s “apology” with a grain of salt
Let's put it this way
Ironically for kicking off American MMA, BJJ is the most TMA of the MMA “core skillsets.” Mindja, for some of us the lack of respect for those who came before IS the draw to non-TMAs… looks at “Come on now”’s response
Precisely.

Of course it is a martial art, but people treat it more as a sport
At least, the wrestlers I’ve interacted with don’t ever act like the people on Judo team at school…

You got that right. Oh yeah and the final word by Sonnen:“thank you”

Who Cares
Chael was the best thing to happen in a long time and he backed his shit up. Nog should start training and stop talking because he is getting old fast and IMO he lost his last two fights.
Hey man, don't bag on the Nogs. They're always injured in their fights so they're not fighting @ 100%.
Big Nog might have a staph infection as we speak.

There whole family has staph.
I like the nogs as much as any Brazilian. Big Nog is a god damn zombie and hes like 34. lil nog’s best days are behind them. If you put any wrestler against them its gonna be a long night for them. Oh ya, chael beats Wandy UD
sigh
your argument is invalid due to subpar grammar

Yeah he backed it up by...
…cheating, and still managing to lose.
Also, do you seriously think Big Nog lost to Couture, or can you not tell Rodrigo and Rogerio apart?

1/It’s big nog, not little nog. So he didn’t lose his last two fight.
2/Sonnen didn’t back up shit, he lost and he was on roids.
I'm a lover not a fighter
whatever. he lost but he did maim Andy for the whole fight. Everyone at thier camp can’t handle wrestlers. And since MMA is getting more wrestling dominated, I think it would be wise to start training for wrestlers more. Or just do you whole camp off your back because thats were you will be.
“Everybody at their camp can’t handle wrestlers.” Funny, but I’m pretty sure Feijao is a Nog student. Also, for as much as Anderson “maimed” Chael, and as much as Chael called his shot, Anderson won, and he won the exact way he said he would.

Dude thanks for leading into something that i feel needs to be said
Wrestling needs to start being treated as a martial art. Seriously.
There is discipline [in wrestling], but not always the right kind.
Allow me to explain on my view; you see these highschoolers are being taught technique that could literally be used to paralyze of even kill someone in the streets. The same way karate and others techniques do.
So what we have is a bunch of kids graduating and getting out of college that get into fights and truly hurting other people. What needs to happen is a type of respect and code of discipline that states that what they learn IS A TYPE OF FIGHTING, AND SHOULD NOT BE USED ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS. Unless you are on the mat and training.
Furthermore I am growing tired of the “new” mma gyms that encourage a “whatever,” “cowboy,” or even further an “American” Mentality of learning this stuff is “no big deal.” It IS a big deal. When you have truly refined your technique you are now a weapon.
And dammit.
It’s about respect! :-)

Wrestling needs to start being treated as a martial art.
Perhaps wrestlers should be the first to treat it as such? I don’t doubt that wrestlers view themselves as practitioners of a highly complicated, physically demanding from of athletic competition, and take pride in doing so. But 99% of the public thinks of Bruce Lee sitting with his legs crossed, meditating, then getting up and bowing before kicking some guys ass whenever they hear the term “martial arts.” Right or wrong, that’s the culture around the phrase. It’d probably start to change if the Iowa wrestling team wore gi’s into the gym and then chanted ohms before hitting the mat.
"We should just concentrate on what we’re good at… Death Metal and interior design." – William Murderface
The "new" trends thing it seems is what DRAWS some of the fans... particularly the Sonnen fans
It’s like fans of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh for “telling it like it is.” Maybe instead of referring to TUF N00bs we should refer to Never Back Down N00bs? :)
To see another perspective (negative) as wrestling as a martial art… let’s get Black Belt magazine to ask Nick Diaz!
Was [Frank Shamrock’s] meeting with Ortiz an MMA landmark? Did he prove a lot to you in that fight?
Yeah, and some of these people who looked up to Frank were so up his ass for the five years that I was training in the beginning. So many guys would come in with wrestling shoes, but I would tap them all out with chokes and arm locks and sweeps and stuff. I would train with a gi and despite all that they would show up and try to act like Frank. They wanted to lift weights and do steroids and paint their hair. This is the sporty type of attitude.
Is being sporty more of an attention thing?
Yeah. They want repercussions from training. They like the look. They didn’t like the way they looked doing martial arts in a gi. They thought that was dorky or something. They don’t like karate—it’s just sort of a dorky thing or something. They like to be cool, more like jocks—lift weights, you know. Here in America they felt better trying to impress their girlfriends than they did walking around with ninja skills and a karate gi. I heard a lot of people from the Lion’s Den would call it pajamas.
It’s the mentality that is mostly concerned with having a strong and big upper body. That’s why wrestling remains popular. Do you think that’s why steroids are such a factor?
Yeah, but these guys liked to hang out together to do all that stuff. I’d go right in and tap all of them out and they wouldn’t like that. I was younger than them, too. I’d wear a gi and they were against that. So I had to go where there was an instructor who could tell people that this is the way. Because they’re not going to listen to anything, even though I was tapping them out. That’s how ignorant people are. Even when they see it right in front of their faces they’re not going to believe it. I’m tapping them out.
Once I got into the academy everybody had the same mind-set as me, so I thought, "Great, we’ll all learn jiu-jitsu together and train together." Sometimes I tried to get those guys to train and they’d be like, "You go run and lift weights like we did and then we’ll train with you." And I’m like, "Dude, why are you doing all that when I’ll beat you? It’s obviously not helping you." I actually went through that with a lot of people from the time I was 16 until I was about 19.

If you had told a wrestler that he was practicing a “martial art,” you might get punched. Our definition of MMA has recently evolved, but it’s still a recent development. And as much as wrestling is technically a “martial art” in many ways it doesn’t look like one.

That's not the way I mean
Traditional eastern martial arts are joined by a common thread of respect, tradition and spiritual connection. As MMA becomes more popular as a sport, we are seeing some of those principles erode, so the differences between western fighting sports (boxing, wrestling) and eastern martial arts are less pronounced. But the martial arts were not ever conceived as sports, while that is the main purpose of wrestling and boxing. The themes of respect and spiritual discipline just aren’t there. That doesn’t make them bad, but it does make more sense out of what Nog, a traditionalist, said.

Talk about hypocrisy, if the Nog’s had any real respect they wouldn’t bitch and moan as much as they do when they lose fights. These guys have basically been exposed as a bunch of cry babies that can’t lose a fight without either being hurt of screwed over by judges. Maybe if they had more weight those comments might mean something but they don’t it’s just typical nonsense coming from some of the biggest whinners in the sport.
