They were already around
It’d be stupid to retroactively ban them.

The point I was trying to make was that all of these disciplines
exist as regulated sport in NY, but he’s stopping them once they’re all put together is absurd.

I don’t want ultimate fighting in New York either. Mixed martial arts on the other hand…
this is just another case of old politicians that are out of touch with society.

Theres something deeper to this
No one gives this big a shit about anything unless its a personal matter. Just like Ted Haggard was crazy about anti-gay nonsense and hes banging male whores.
My guess is this guy was beat up by a karate expert every day at school and had a wrestler steal his first girlfriend and then a boxer punched his dog and killed it.

being vocally agianst something many other politicians support is a good way to get attention.
Do we spend this much time talking about any single supporter of MMA in the state gov’t of NY?
Oh, it's a personal matter.
The NY State Assembly convenes in the basement once a week for light sparring. A while back some things got heated and Sheldon Silver took it to Reilly a little bit. He’s been on some bullshit with the other legislators ever since.

i agree there's something deeper
but my wormy conspiracy laden brain thinks it probably has something to do with unions and mafioso relations between the vegas/kansas city mafia families and the east coast families
conspiracy theories are dumb

There has been a suspected union "motive"
He does admit to being pro-union but denies that he’s tied to whichever union was specifically opposing Zuffa/Station Casinos.
He allows boxing and football, but not MMA
What an idiot. Both boxing and football are proven to have worse long-term effects on their participants, namely head trauma.
He's consistant
He’s not a fan of professional boxing, and would ban it if he could. The man is not a fraud, these are his convictions. For Pete’s sake, he donates all his pay from the assembly to charity.
The ONLY accomplishment Mr. Reilly has...
….is further endangering the welfare of the athletes who already compete in NYC’s Underground Combat League (Google it)….with no doctors, EMTs, or ambulance on sight….no regulation just means no safety….people can and do find a way to fight…..and it’s dangerous….thanks a lot Bob….

Wilbon was on PTI this week calling MMA barbarism
and basically accusing anyone who watches it of being a mindless, bloodthirsty thug. Dana should launch an educational campaign, complete with touting the benefits of promoting the value of martial arts for building confidence and strength in children.
…Either that or we need to start beating the crap out of these people.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
partially true
I watch the fights to see the brutal ko and shit like that but I also watch to admire the skills involved (ie, GSP, BJ, Silva etc…)
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole, you gotta pay the troll toll to get in.
That was Kornheiser. Wilbon is actually warming up to MMA, although he did nothing to dispute Kornheiser’s “barbarism” comment. Kinda just conceded that he was interested in said “barbarism”

It was Wilbon I promise
They’re both basically on the same side of the issue, but Wilbon was in a full blown rant about it, on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Well, i watched all week, but if you promise and are that sure, i don’t wanna end up looking stupid, but i for some reason recall Wilbon not really caring, and remember specifically that it was Kornheiser who first called it barbarism. Interestingly enough, i don’t think it really matters and we don’t have to worry about ESPN being a roadblock of any sort. They’ve consistently increased their coverage over the past year.

Now I want to kill those guys.
They’re both clueless and that show sucks. Ive seen it when nothing else was on and they really don’t have good opinions on sports in general. And they’re not even funny.

MMA will not be regulated in NY for at least 2 to 3 years, if that, if it continues to go on the current plan.

Ya know, I used to think we would just have to wait until these old farts in politics die and were replaced by people from younger generations, but I’ve recently realized that the young people who want to get into politics are the douches who have been brainwashed by the system and will do any brown-nosing and conforming necessary to get to political positions for the same confounding reasons why the old farts got into politics: Ego, need for acceptance, greed, desire to control others. And then they’ll embrace the 2 party system and fall into the same game of the 2 parties basically being complicit with each other in rotating between who takes the blame just to keep the charade going. Ain’t shit never gonna change.

seen it. i don’t think it’ll be that bad. hopefully we’ll be visited by aliens before that happens and either be
A) obliterated and taken out of our misery.
B)Band together to defeat the aliens and then steal their technology.
it’s an unfortunate circumstance of human nature that all the best innovations and biggest advancements have been borne of huge wars, which forced people to band together to defeat enemies. we’ve pretty much done all the big-warring we can possibly do and reached a point where any real war would result in mutually-assured-destruction, so nobody goes to real war and all progress has stagnated. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I was inferring that the Chinese use the same tactic (in business at least): they band together against aliens and steal mutlinationals technologies and processes
internationals can not enter the chinese market unless it is thru a 50% joint venture with a chinese corporation
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole, you gotta pay the troll toll to get in.
It's basically irrelevant whether they do or don't
It’s just called “indigenous innovation” instead of “legalized theft of IP”. See the Airbus A320 and the Comac C919. Airbus completes an assembly plant in China in 2009, then Comac magically discovers the ability to design and construct the C919—-a plane that is basically identical to the A320—-by 2014.
If you have the nth generation of technology, you had better only be bringing the n-1 model to China.
Not afraid to nitpick
Uhh what?
You do realize that we are in the midst of the greatest technological revolution the world has ever seen right? And that the growth rate of technological change is increasing?
I would probably rather be of average (American) wealth now than be the richest person in the world in 1975.
Not afraid to nitpick
The fact that he calls it Ultimate Fighting should be reason enought to condem his entire argument.
:)
Or it shows how long he's been following it
Because it was called “ultimate fighting” for years.

Because he does not allow people to live their own lives free from HIS morality that does not benefit society as a whole, nor individuals.
I can’t believe nobody calls him out and demands his philosophical reasoning behind the idea that the state somehow has the right to ban a sport like this from being done, regardless of the athletes or devotees. I love mma. I live in ny. I want it legal here.
But I find that a politician is standing up for what he believes is refreshing from a political stand point. And in a way he could be right. Does more fighting on tv have an influence on kids and finally our societies adults in a negative way. I don’t think anyone knows the answer to that.
I wonder if he will vote for legalization of pot?
