Bellator champ Hector Lombard calls out Strikeforce champ Ronaldo Jacare Souza.

From Sherdog:

"With Hector’s win tonight, I’ve said many times the opportunity for Hector to fight Jacare would be spectacular," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said at the postfight news conference. "I’d love to see it."

"Rebney also said he wants to pit his welterweight champion, Ben Askren, against Strikeforce titleholder Nick Diaz. The Bellator boss explained that co-promotional bouts with Strikeforce would likely be three-round non-title fights. "

Is this good business for Bellator? What if all their champs lose?

by IRodC on Oct 29, 2010 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly, I don’t think that MMA fans won’t watch Bellator or anything if the Bellator champs lose. If these fights even happen, then Bellator gets more exposure even if the Bellator champions lose. It’s good business for Bellator just for getting buzz for their product and calling for matches that probably won’t even happen, and getting some MMA fans to want to see these matches. I personally don’t see the negatives for Bellator here.

Look at the flipside...

How bad is it for SF of Bellator keeps calling out their champs and win?

by Hardcase on Oct 29, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Just merge your second rate promotions already. You’re both gonna die within a few years anyways. cut the delusions of grandeur crap with you champions clause nonsense and just make this stuff happen.

that being said, Hector better stop with the “I only train boxing now” BS and get back on his Judo horse or Jacare will have him all twisted up and choked out in no time.

From a fan’s perspective, I wouldn’t mind seeing Strikeforce and Bellator co-promote one show a year together.

by KAN0 on Oct 29, 2010 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

Can you imagine a co-promotion PPV:

Alvarez vs. Melendez (I’d take alvarez)
Diaz vs. Arsken (diaz)
Lombard vs. Jacare (lombard)

Then throw in:
Huerta vs. Thompson or JZ
Hornbuckle vs. Woodley

I’d pay to see a ppv like that for sure
Cole Konrad vs. Bigfoot Silva

I was going to post the same thing...

….how many buys does that do? Affliction-level? Better?

by BrothersGottaAndyHug on Oct 29, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably not

No one on that card is a real “star” per say that people would dish out money to see.
Affliction was able to claim to have the p4p best in the world at the time so it intrigued people to buy it and it still did very bad numbers. I imagine with Bellator and SF’s current marketing this card could only hope to do as good as an Affliction card but certainly not better.

by Spider_Vemon on Oct 29, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If they did something with a PPV you’d better believe Alistair Overeem would be on it too

by nastyem on Oct 29, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

And Emelianenko

It would almost have to be headlined by those two to draw a good amount of interest.

by Spider_Vemon on Oct 29, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

can you imagine the clusterfuck a Strikeforce / Bellator / M-1 Global PPV would be

by nastyem on Oct 29, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

Dana White would be tweeting " :-) " all night long.

by Spider_Vemon on Oct 29, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But Bellator has no one even remotely close to fight Fedor. He’d have to fight another strikeforce fighter, or have Bellator sign a big name Free agent

by Fedorable on Oct 29, 2010 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Bellator is really calling out SF lately huh? Oh well, I think Jacare would wrap Lombard up and tap him. Other than that though I really think Bellators champs would beat Strikeforces guys. Too bad the #2 and #3 promotions in the US decided to add Champ clauses in their contracts too so that these guys will never compete for the real belts.

by Spider_Vemon on Oct 29, 2010 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Here’s why it won’t happen: Bellator is looking to get a better tv deal. They are by far the lowest of the 3 promotions so even if they lose the fights they gain by getting fan awareness. And if they take 2 or all 3 of the bouts? They can tout themselves as the better promotion and Coker has to worry about Bellator leapfrogging him and stealing his deal with Showtime.

How to make it work:Have the Bellator champs challenge for the Strikeforce titles. If they win they are now the Strikeforce champions and have to sign a deal to defend those belts at least once a year for the next 3 years. Meanwhile they can go back to Bellator and defend those belts at least once a year as well. It’s a win-win. Sure Bellator because a tournament to crown a new challenger for the Strikeforce belt every year, but they gain a lot of press and hopefully a lot of eyes. Which they need. Strikeforce meanwhile greatly expands their talent pool and elevates the level of competition for their champs.

What happens when (hypothetically) Askren beats Diaz. Now he’s both strikeforce and bellator Champ (inyour theory). But what if he loses if Aksren then loses to Lymon Good next season in Bellator? Is he still the Strikeforce champ? or does that title belong to Good as well?

by Fedorable on Oct 29, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering that Bellator and Strikeforce fight under different rules...

…then Askren would lose his belt in Bellator (in this hypothetical scenario) but retain it in Strikeforce much like Aoki did with his DREAM belt when he lost to Melendez. I think the only way to make it work is to require the victor to defend his new belt in the new promotion while also defending his belt in his original one. Either that or he would have to defend it on a co-promoted card. These deals would have to be signed ahead of time pending the outcome of the bout so that neither promotion could hold the others belt hostage. Sooner or later, MMA is gonna have to go this route if we’re ever gonna see the best truly fight the best.

by Sucker-Lite on Oct 29, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Lymon is now the Bellator champ and gets a rematch with Askren on a Strikeforce card for the Strikeforce belt. When fighting in Belator they would only be defending the Tournament Belt not the Strikeforce belt.

by John Nash on Oct 29, 2010 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

This attempt at co-promotion with stipulations to protect the promotions (and not the fighters) reeks of one big clusterfuck to me.

Coupled with their own champions clause I can’t take either promotion seriously.

By the way, what’s ever happening with the lawsuit UFC filed against Bellator?

by KJ Gould on Oct 29, 2010 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah. Lombard either wins immediately and decisively or goes on to win a pretty average decision.

Sell your soul to Herschman and you too can be on Showtime Rebney…..like nottheface said, he’s trying weasel his way on Showtime. I’ll have to respectfully disagree with the how to make it work theory….it won’t ever work!

by nochapi on Oct 29, 2010 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

If DREAM and Strikeforce can do it...

…then why not Bellator and Strikeforce…or even Bellator and DREAM? Hell, why not all three? Really, in the future, there would probably have to be non-exclusive contracts for fighters for this to become a regularity. Then fighters could fight wherever they want with the only stipulation beinmg that they defend their belts.

by Sucker-Lite on Oct 29, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

because Strikeforce and dream and part of the super mega alliance that will take over the sport. Bellator can’t just join the mega alliance like that.

by Phildo on Oct 29, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Rebney is a cancer to MMA. I don’t watch or support any of his shows.
