Nah
Werdum broke him … in their first fight.
Hindsight is 20:20, but Gonzaga was exactly the same fighter back then that he is today. His skills might have improved, but his tendency to fold when things don’t go his way was just as prevalent back then as it is today.
I kinda thought Gonzaga shook that tendency off in the Schaub fight. He was actually turning the momentum in his favor (for the first time) right at the end of round 3.
Problem is, he traded his tendency to fold for an equally bad tendency to avoid fighting to his strengths.
Disagree, he looked sluggish and disinterested right until the end, losing the striking exchanges and hardly landing anything. What happened though was that Schaub was silly enough to shoot in on him with five seconds left, Gonzaga sprawled on him and quickly took his back and attempted RNC right as the bell rung. But I think that was just Schaub wanting to display his wrestling a little, knowing that if he failed Gonzaga wouldn’t have time to do anything anyways.

totally agree
it was more of a mistake by Shaub than anything.

Gonzaga can blame no one but himself
He fought like an idiot against Schaub. He dido it to himself

i can’t even remember the last time he used his BJJ. anyone? that KO to CC seemed to turn him into a pure stand-up fighter
i think hes either got bad knees or a bad back
something that prevents him from shooting
hes a black belt schaubs a purple, if that got on the ground we all know how it woulda ended

The few moments they actually grappled near the end of the 3rd he had his back and was ready to sink in an RNC within seconds.
If I was rooting for Gabe I would’ve torn my hair out.

Scrambled his brain with punches and then got an easy double leg against the fence.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

That means you missed his fights with Nelson, Big Ben, Fedor, & Rogers- all which ended in exciting knockouts

Expect to see more fighters cut now that there is the WEC-UFC merger. Don’t get me wrong because I love the merger, but it would not surprise me to see many UFC fighters get cut sooner rather than later. I expect UFC 122 to be used as a card to cut a lot of the fighters who lose.

Damn, is it me or are JDS' notable wins becoming less and less impressive?
Tough luck for Gonzaga.

But I don’t care. He’s violently destroyed everyone. Just making an observation.

ok really?
yea brock lost and yea it was ugly
but he beats the fuck outta 90% of the UFCs heavyweight division and 95% of the heavyweights in the world
to think kongo beats him is totaly absurd
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan
not really
if he can stuff one bull rush take down and tag him once, the fights pretty much in the bag…
I kid of course, but it’s not absurd
You're kidding right?
Seriously, you have to be kidding. In a world where midget Rocky Matt Serra knocks out GSP and a 2-1 novice beats a legend like Randy Couture you can’t be serious to think that the idea of anyone beating anyone is totally outside the realm of possibility.
i understand that
but uve seen kongos ground game right?
i take brock 49 times outta 50

Kongo gets kept around for being big , scary looking, muscle bound guy that looks good on elite fighters highlight reel.of wins.

Done with the UFC and back to training or is he done with fighting period?

If he REALLY wants to live a normal life and be anonymous, he should ask Strikeforce to book him against Dan Henderson on CBS.
I find visual aids really drive the point home.

If Gonzaga fought Schaub throughout the fight like he did in Round 3 he would’ve won. Schaub was limping to the post fight conference.
That was the only thing he did good, but far too little off. Also could have worked: at least attempt a fucking takedown!

NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Damn this guy was like one of my favorite fighters!! I know he has sucked (meh?!, bad luck?, poor game plans) lately but he was always fun and exciting to watch. He is a tough fighter that has some legit skills for anyone and was a perfect gate keeper. dude this guy was on a teer for a while and just seemed unstopable with crazy power in his hands, but he never seemed to get any better. He is one of the few fighters that risks it all to go for the knock out and all his exciting performances have caught up with him.
I will miss you gonzaga!!!!
but then again I live in Mass, and maybe I can try and go to one of his BJJ classes.
Hopefully Brazil's construction crews can reinforce their walls before he arrives

Thanks for all the fights, Gabe.

He shouldn’t have been cut. Should’ve at least kept him as a gatekeeper.

Sounds like a man who no longer wants to fight MMA on the big stage
He’s been so hesitant the last two fights, I just think he lost the desire to continue fighting in the UFC. He wants other things in life now. More power to him and I hope he finds what he’s looking for.
Its just a shame he destroyed CC’s future as well.
Dumb.
They should have had him fight Kongo and then cut the loser.

Is anyone else thinking an injury caused irreparable damage so he's just giving up now...
or is his heart just on into fighting anymore?

I'm a fan and this saddens me.
But, it was a while coming honestly. He has put on to many disapointing performances recently and that highlight reel KO might simply just be to much to ever really overcome for him at this point.
Maybe he should have gotten back to the "bjj forever" before the Schaub fight
Trading with a golden gloves champ makes as much sense as Schaub pulling gard on Gonzaga
I hope he goes back to BJJ and dominates
He has incredible physical tools and has always been one of my favs, but this post makes it look like his heart wasn’t in the sport anymore.
Will I ever get to where I'm going?
If I do, will I know when I'm there?
PLUS
this is a guy who had Carwin down, and mounted, and rocked. He DEFINITELY has the skills to compete at the top. It really just seems like he lacks the heart to be a fighter.

Sorry
But I always just think of him tapping to Demian Maia.
if your name isnt Roger Gracie,
There is a huge chance you could very easily end up tapping to Maia.

The Anti-Couture is cut
I will always think of Gonzaga as the Anti-Randy. Randy would always come up with good game plans, and work to execute them. Gonzaga never seems to use his strengths, and consistently showed up with terrible game plans. The skills are there, the discipline seems to be lacking.
I’m being led to believe he’s simply retiring from MMA.

saw this coming after his last loss
guess Al Gore got what he wanted!
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
Goddamnit
As awesome as it is, I wish that Cro Cop head kick had never happened. Then Gonzaga wouldn’t think he’s a K1 level striker on the feet when he continues to devolve in his footwork and work rate with each match. The only things that have improved with his age is his ability to turtle up and be slightly more patient. This motherfucker should be the Demian Maia of the HW division, simply taking down and dismantling everyone without throwing more than 10 punches a round. Such a waste of talent.
not only that
but maybe the old Cro Cop would still be around, I think that kick messed him up.
