Pettis is the next UFC LW CHamp.........

His takedown defense is sick which he showed off against NCAA wrestling champ Roller and Pettis subs are slick and stand up is ridiculous. Neither Gray or Edgar will be able to take him down and he will wreck them standing. Remember I said this.

he should have no problem taking a beating then

I know bendo isn't at the same level as maynard or edgar

but he’s always a blast to see in the cage. I’d really like them to put the big fighter’s in WECs smaller cage than viceversa, tho.

they’re planning a show in australia next year, aren’t they? if so, they can probaby pull it off that he gets lined up with a shot by then, as long as maynard/edgar and the following title fight happen on scheduled (barring injuries).

by woooburn on Oct 28, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this is pretty cool.

I think Ben Hendo and Pettis have a lot to offer Maynard and Edgar. Pettis’s flashy striking and solid TDD/groundwork could give both fits and Hendo has a good all-around game to give anyone at 155 a fight. Whichever two come out of this mini-tourney will be in for one hell of a scrap.

by Josh Grant on Oct 28, 2010 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

While a fight with Maynard would be a toss-up for Henderson, he’d stand a great chance to beat Edgar. Frankie walks around at 158-160, while Henderson is around 182 between fights. While Frankie’s boxing is far superior, I actually think that Benson’s wresting is probably better and cardio wouldn’t be an issue for either of them. At the end of the day, I just think that Henderson could bully his way to a hard-fought decision, assuming he didn’t catch Frankie in one of his signature guillotines first.

this sucks for MW, LHW, and HW devisions

cause they will get serious competition for “fight of the night bonus” these guys go all out. Give them a run for their money lol

by suckmyballs on Oct 28, 2010 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

everyone in the UFC should be “dang” there goes my FOTN bonus cause yeah they come to fight the former WEC fighters

As I flippantly said on Twitter, I’m starting to regret this merger already.

Henderson/Pettis getting a title shot is right up there with the TUF 4 title shots.

by Mike Fagan on Oct 28, 2010 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s 1 fight. And doing something like that will give extra credibility to the other 2 champions that are coming over.

by Phildo on Oct 28, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ben Henderson choked me out when I rolled with him.

If he doesn’t become UFC champion what does that say about my grappling? Think about it.

If they knew this was coming, why didn’t they wait to announce his WEC title fight and then pit him against one of the top UFC contenders. Say Sotiropoulos, Sherk, Miller, or Gomi. Whomever held the WEC title then would be a legitimate contender.

by John Nash on Oct 28, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Their should be a question mark after that query.

by John Nash on Oct 28, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

“Their” should be “there”, obviously. I’m distracted by the M-1 fights.

by John Nash on Oct 28, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

It had to be done.

If they didn’t make this match up, then it immediately makes fans think that the WEC and all of it’s fighters are inferior. While they may play out to be the truth, it very well may not and you don’t want fans writing them off from the start.

Personally I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

by Empty Thoughts on Oct 28, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

How could that possibly be? Most people outside of this site have no clue who these guys are, let alone think they’re inferior to UFC fights.

And that point will be proven when Edgar or Maynard smashes the WEC rep.

by Bob Loblaw TX on Oct 28, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s not exactly what I said.

The Henderson/Pettis winner doesn’t deserve a title shot. And the UFC lightweights are superior to the WEC lightweights.

Sonnen didn’t get a title shot for beating Paulo Filho, nor Condit for beating Hiromitsu Miura, nor Steve Cantwell for beating Brian Stann. Etc. etc.

Henderson or Pettis leapfrogs Sotiropolous, Dunham, Sherk, Florian, Penn because…?

by Mike Fagan on Oct 28, 2010 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, three of the five guys you named lost their last fight, with BJ moving up to 170 for now. Sotiro is getting kind of due, but really, his last win was Pellegrino. Sherk-the winner of this fight I’d be behind.

Where were the title unifications for the other WEC belts? And the outcry for shitting “on the fighters and the fans” when those titles just sorta went away?

by Mike Fagan on Oct 28, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

This is like the same outcry about Overeem not defending his prestigious Strikeforce belt. Do people really give a shit about the WEC lightweight strap? Honestly?

by Mike Fagan on Oct 28, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

The WEC was still a brand

And it could get confusing to unify a title of a promotion which a lot of people had no idea was even associated with the UFC.

They’re publicly killing the brand this time and want to use the belt as a catalyst to sell a fight.

by B Money on Oct 28, 2010 5:01 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Very different situation I think

Back when the heavier classes got folded into the UFC, the UFC was just picking up steam, and the WEC was seemingly much more detached. Second, the WEC was still going to remain a separate organization, sans the heavier weight classes.

This time around, the UFC is absolutely ball bustingly huge. And the WEC has grown much more as well, even putting out a few PPVs. The WEC, now as opposed to then, has benefited from the UFC marketing muscle for the last year at least and, I think, is much better known. And its being completely consumed now, it will no longer exist as a separate entity.

Am I the only one excited

about a potential Bendo vs. Edgar/Maynard? It seems everyones writing Ben off. (If he beats Pettis) Neither Edgar or Maynard are the BJ of old (ie vs Sherk, Florian or Diego)

How amusing would it be

to see the reaction if Bendo won the title and gave his patented “can I get an Amen?!” bahaha I don’t know if this actually amuses or horrifies me.

Where is pdl?

I’ve forgotten how overrated Henderson is.

Henderson may be overrated, but I would like to see him fight:

Guida
Gomi
Griffin
Guillard
Diaz
Dunham

…pretty much anyone whose name starts with a D or a G that isn’t named Gray

Also:
Pellegrino
Sanchez

I always pictured myself being played by an Edward Norton.

And Ben Henderson should fight BJ Penn at lightweight. If he’s a top fighter, lets see how he handles the former champ.

The matchups I want from the possibles.

Bendo/Edgar or Pettis/Maynard.

Regardless of the outcomes though, I’ll be happy.

by Empty Thoughts on Oct 28, 2010 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

The lightweight division looks more interesting now.

Expanding the pool never hurts, and maybe a lightweight Condit or two will emerge as things sort themselves out.

Though I’m also still holding out hope that Gray again knocks himself out slamming someone and chalks it up to being tired. Because who hasn’t gotten so tired they put their head in a guy’s crotch, right? (all jest, I’ll watch that dude fight anybody)

UFC has to get creative with the LW division.

With how unsexy it could become with Maynard.

Huge break for Pettis

He can go from being an underdog to Shane Roller all the way to fighting for a UFC title in two fights. Who else has ever had that kind of rise

If this was the WBC, Henderson - Pettis winner will just be for the UFC Silver Lightweight title.
