Did Brock get hit with an illegal blow?
So, the first time, I watched UFC 121, I had just come from a solid 8 hours of tailgating and footballin. Needless to say I was not in the right state of mind to absorb what was happening in the fights. Honestly, I didn't remember any of the results with the exception of the title fight. So fast forward to Monday. I decide to watch the card again, for the 1st time. Pretty solid card overall. Diego was impressive, Jake was not. Anyway I noticed that during the main event, Cain clipped Brock dead center on the back of the skull. It was the shot that REALLY put him down. I'm not the authority on MMA rules, but i'm pretty sure it was an illegal blow. I'm not trying to make this a Brock Vs. Cain debate. BROCKLESNAR should have never been in that position to begin with. Just food for thought.
PS, I'm not so good on the gif making, so if anyone can give some pointers that would be phenomenal.

It was illegal cause Lesnar was running
when you’re fighting, you’re swinging your adrenalin pumping arms. I’m pretty sure cain didn’t wanna punch him in the back of the head but when you’re running with the back of your head exposed, it’ll probably get punched
Not unlike
carwin and Mir, where over 1/2 the shots that connected were illegal shots, including the one that turned Mir’s lights out when it hit directly on the base of the skull…

Just about every fight includes a shot in the back of the head, especially on the ground. Sad but that’s the way it is.

If you turn your back while retreating you deserve to get hit in the back of the head.

Not that Brock did this on purpose, but a lot of fighters use the back of their head as a defense, turning 180 just before the punch connects so that they can get the ref to issue a warning.
Anthony Njokuani did remind Chris Horodecki why that is such a bad idea – and headkick KO’d him despite Chris turning his back.

hey
UFC can use this storyline. Brock complaining about shot to the back of the head, Rogan claiming that the fight was a toss up before then, and then a rematch after Brock batters Mir again.

It was clearly and unmistakenly on the ear

Yup
I won’t deny that Mir got lucky in that fight, though you never know what would have happened if there was no interruption. Lesnar was a noob, and may have still got submitted. It’s not like he was in a disadvantageous position after Mir stood up and was dropped again.
kp82 beat me to the punch, no pun intended. The ref is not going to deem that an illegal shot as lesnar turned his head away, and it looked to me right behind the ear anyway
Ask Brock about that

Quite possibly (tough to tell exactly where he was hit) but the ref was right there and it happened due to the way Brock was moving so it’s a non-issue. The big thing here is that Cain obviously wasn’t attempting to hit Brock in the back of the head, he was just swinging and Brock turned his head.
Those kinds of border line hits are fairly common and tough to judge, guys can’t always predict how the other figher will move when they are throwing punches.
It looks like it could have been the side of the head.
That angle is not conclusive.

I think it was more side of the head
It really wouldn’t have mattered, he was done either way.

Who cares.
If it’s not greasing or steroid use it’s irrelevant. Cain clowned Brock.
When you turn away and run from punches.
You get ended.
He should have kept his eyes on Cain at all times and kept his hands up.
It’s not Cain’s fault that Brock’s stand up is so laughably bad. Cain was throwing where his face was suppose to be.

anyway, he hit couture on the back of the head and nobody cared.

Look like the side of the head to me...
But nevermind.

That's right on the ear
But Brock’s hand is so large it looks B.O.T.H. But who cares.

Brock was done with the knee..
That punch was more or less the icing on the cake that was already baked..
Cain beat Brock fair and square..
There is no excuses other than Brock made a few errors in judgment or game plan at the start of the fight… But those are Lesnar’s faults.. not Cains..
Lesnar gambled and got beat by the better guy.. He had his shot and lost..
If we’re breaking down the analysis of what went wrong for Brock.. Then that’s one thing.. It’s easy to point out where and how things went wrong for him..
If we’re pointing out what Cain did right.. That’s easy to point out.. Brock made it even easier for him than he should have to begin with..
When you gamble.. You’re going to have a winner and a loser.. It’s just that simple.. Sometimes you get luck on your side.. Sometimes you don’t..

BROCKLESNARRRR!!!!
That's ridiculous
It cannot be illegal when the cause is based on what the opponent does. In this case Brock turning his head away.
I dont think thats a rule
"You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either." - Dan Hardy
It's on the ref
in that scenario it could be said brock wasnt properly defending himself at all times. However, you could also say cain was in the wrong. How the rules work are, if the ref doesn’t call it, it’s legal. Brock could challenge it with the A.C., but I’m sure he’d lose.

A shot to the back of the head is only illegal in the mohawk area (the strip directly up the middle of the skull, starting at the base of the neck to the top of the head). The shot Velasquez landed was directly behind the ear, to the side of the head. Perfectly legal. It landed in almost the exact same spot as Lesnar’s punch on Couture.
