Matt Hughes Shares His Thoughts on UFC 121
From his blog on Matt-Hughes.com:
Interesting night of fights, I had several offers to bet on Brock, but I just didn’t place any bets on him. I didn’t know a lot about Cain, but I did know that he had some good wrestling credentials, he had better striking abilities, and he was going to use a lot more movement in the fight. So, I didn’t think Brock was going to lose like he did, but I knew there was a good chance Cain could get his hand raised. UFC kind of made a big deal about it. I really don’t know why, but I’m glad that the Mexicans have a heavyweight champion.
I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find myself interested. Tito was on the card, against Hamill and I didn’t think there was any way for Tito to win. Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be "Team Punished;" but I would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the UFC.
Jake Shields fight was interesting to me. Jake ran out of gas, but still ended up getting the split decision. From a technical view, Kampmann had a terrible fight, in my opinion, he gave the fight to Shields. One thing I will say is Joe Rogan’s commentary was a little off during the fight. The ground game was pretty even in my book with Shields doing a little more controlling. Kampmann escaped to his feet several times and Kampmann had more submission attempts than Shields had, but listening to Rogan, you would have thought Shield had submitted him the first ten seconds of being on the ground. I really think the UFC could use a third man doing the broadcast, that has some experience inside the octagon. I don’t disagree with everything Rogan says, but there are a lot of things he says that I just laugh at.

You and everyone else dude, joke with all my friends is that once Rogan starts talking up their game, that dude is going to get his ass handed to him.
Almost happened again with Shields!
Play Hard, Train Harder
Yep
Happened when GSP fought Parysian and Miller. Rogan was building them up pretty hard and they both got beatdown.

Just like he talked up Ryan Jensen. “Just too big of a step up in competition for McGee”. Then look what happened.
great point on this match, Just another Rogan fight you would think buy his commentary was a total mismatch and a one sidded fight buy listing to him in the1st round. He even said how the loss in this fight would be a good learning experience for McGee going foward and how us fans have to remember this was a huge step up in competition also for Court McGee. Well Joe not only was it a good learning experience he actually won the dam fight also.
McGee was getting tooled in round 1, and with the size mismatch, Rogan started playing Nostradamus.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
George Carlin
Sure he was getting his ass handed to him in the lst but if you were to not see the fight and only had Joe and Goldie to go buy on what was happening you would of thought it was a brutal beatdown mismatch and some 10-8 round. I mean Rogan all but had McGee beaten and was already talking about Courts next opponent and how it should not be such a step up in competition. And if someone should know how dam fast a MMA fight can change it should be Rogan.
Overall Rogan's not a bad commentator. My only problem with him is...
He can become very biased in some fights. Case in point – the Akiyama/Belcher bout.
When I watch Ultimate Knockouts
I can always tell when the KO is on it’s way as soon as Rogan starts talking up the soon to be victim’s striking.
I hate Hughes and I like TIto
but Team Punished was kinda funny

Or they could have a stable of guest announcers like Kenny and Rashad. Both those guys are pretty capable. 1 or 2 more guys and they could cycle through them without interfering with their training much.
oh god no.
Please no more Kenny or Rashad.
How about some Frye action.
Hell, get Jordan Breen in there!
"One should always be cold minded and remember that a ridiculous incident may occur any time."
Please no. I think it’s a bad idea to have current active fighters doing commentary for their own organization, this is also the reason I don’t watch MMA Live (plus I really hate Rashad). Just too much room for bias and politics screwing things up.
I will admit that Kenny did good commentary when he was with WEC though.

I agree. History has shown that the judges tend to give it to the guy on top though.
ummmm...
The Guy that kept ending up in full mount.
Its not like he was just in kappmans guard.
I don’t know what fight the judge that gave it to kappman was watching.

Exactly what I thought. Shields looked terrible as far as his conditioning is concerned (something which Rogan bluntly pointed out) and even then, he still mounted Kampmann on numerous occasions, passed guard without issue whilst ignoring Kampmann’s failed attempts to latch on Guillotines whilst Shields was in side control etc.
I have no issue with bringing in a third commentator, if they know what they’re talking about then it just add’s to the discussion. But as far as Rogan is concerned, he’s the best in the biz. Simple.
Goldberg: "He's got him in some kind of strange choke I've never seen before!"
Rogan: "That's a rear naked choke."
I do think position with no offence should be downgraded though.
Did Shields do anything from mount?
should be answered with a resounding NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
b,….b…but ELBOWS IN THE UFC!!!
ugh. I cannot stand watching Shields fight. That human snuggie shtick is so freakin annoying.
Kampman at least tried to do something to hurt Jake, or possibly sub him. jake got mount a few times (albeit only for short times) but really did nothing. Grappling is great, and he passes guard REALLY WELL, but this isn’t the guard passing championships, and I don’t care for it much as a fan at all.
"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

Something about how he phrased
but I’m glad that the Mexicans have a heavyweight champion.
Made me laugh. But I agree with him for the most part here, and I think even Rogan would agree with him about that third person. Maybe when Kenny retires, I think Forrest or Mir would be good too. Randy obviously.
I’ve never really benn a fan of Matt, but I’d get a drink with him. He seems like some of the guys I work with. Not a bad guy.

Love him or hate him
Hughes knows what he’s talking about. Rogan was making Sheilds out to be the second be grappler known to man, second to marcello garcia of coarse. And sure, Sheilds was giving Kampmann is neck every takedown, and was able to control Kampmann for a while, I wouldn’t say that sheilds dominated him by any means.
I personally think Hughes is the man. He’s the best WW of all time (until GSP decideds its ok for us to call him the best of all time), and really has a well rounded game. Sure his striking is rudamentary, but he’s a takedown machine, and a really skilled grappler.. I’d like to see him handle BJ and then take a fight against the loser of GSP/Kos
Honestly I don’t want to see GSP unnecessarily beat Hughes again. That chapter is over.
Kos vs Hughes would be interesting but a fight like Fitch vs Hughes is too predictable in my opinion.

How is it predictable?
I really think Hughes’ fall as been overstated. He got dominated by Georges, but so has everybody. He looked so so against Sera and Renzo, but he looked great against Almeida, and he beat those guys. I think Hughes Fitch is a good fight.

Agreed. He also was soundly beaten by a middle-weight in Thiago Alves, but other than that, Hughes still looks very good. I wish they would have him fight Swick or Fitch.
Did you see the size of that chicken?
Yeah I forgot that fight
He also took that fight on pretty short notice.

It was Thiago who took that fight on short notice. Hence his coming in weighing as much as Zulu

Personally I think Fitch would present too many problems.
I may be wrong.
But I’m not jumping up for joy for his victories over Sera, Renzo or Almeida.

Shields is very likely in the top four at his weight grappling wise. He’d have multiple championships at every level (more than he has already) if he competed full time in BJJ alone.
Off-hand, I’d say Marcelo, Terere and maybe Popovitch/Kron are on the same level Shields is on grappling-wise.
In a cage/ring, it’s different. But he’s still ridiculously good there too.

Are you restricting it to a certain size grappler? Bc I’m thinking of a lot more people who are better than if not as good as shields
by disinferno06 on Oct 25, 2010 7:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
If you look at my words – “top four at his weight” – you’ll see what I mean. Also, by his weight I generally mean 170ish, where he’s mostly competed.
At 185ish, he’d run into Jacare, Braulio, Maia and a few others (David Terrell needs to come back, man). Shields might be favored against Galvao though.

Wow. I agree with Hughes.
Straightfoward and to the point.
A 3rd person in the broadcast booth would be too much though. But I do think we need Rogan’s fanboy craziness next to Goldberg’s precise precision.

On a serious note
Why not give it a try? He wouldn’t cost much to book, due to his almost complete lack of name value, and would probably do a very good job.

It would never work.
I’d never notice the end of a fight. Danaher would lull me into an enthralled yet meditative state as I clung to his every word, suddenly comprehending the meaning of life. It would be blissful, yet ineffective as far as the play-by-play goes :)
I love Rogan.
he can be biased, but I know he listens to criticism.

rogan usually strikes a good ballance between what his boss wants him to say and what is actually happening
his analytical skills are superior to any other commentator too, imho.

That would be awesome
I could listen to Carolla talk about anything I was so pissed when they took his show off the radio.
I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find myself interested.
Chuck’s probably done, Randy’s talking like he’s done, Tito looks done……… besides Hughes and BJ who’s left from the UFC old guard?
Interesting comments from Hughes.
I think I’ll start checking out his blog. He comes across much more even handed than I would of expected and I respect that.
" Joe Rogan’s commentary was a little off during the fight. The ground game was pretty even in my book "
i literally had to turn off the audio doing the fight because of rogan`s idiotic commentary, " This is a whole new level of BJJ lady’s and gentlemen " ?? give me a break…..
Yes please. I really really enjoy when he’s calling fights.

For not knowing a lot about Cain it seems like he knows quite a bit!
I find it comical that he would say that he doesn’t know a lot about Cain. Just sounds a little cocky to me that he would even say that. Like “I’m too good to know something about a younger fighter but I actually watch all his fights”
Maybe Hughes wants to squeeze into a commentating job when he’s one fighting!
Joe Rogan has his faults but I would rather listen to Rogan than Hughes any day. I can form my own opinions about fights and don’t always agree with Rogan but I still think he is a great commentator.
Turn down the volume
