Good fight

Not throwing Mckee to the wolves and giving him a solid chance to show where he stands. If he dominates Volkmann without much trouble it’ll give the brass an idea of how good and motivated he is now that he’s finally in the UFC.

Props to Volkmann

Paulo Thiago, Martin Kampmann, Ronnys Torres, Paul Kelly, and now Antonio McKee? That’s a very tough lineup.

I hope Christmas stays even though I think he will lose this fight.

McKee is 40 years old. Its not like he’s gonna be around for many more years, why not give him someone with a tougher stylistically matchup. Jeremy Stephens, or Gomi or Guillard.

Volkman is a better wrestler

than any of the guys you’re suggesting.
2 wrestlers generally prevents lay and pray and results in lots of scrambles and action.

Volkmann hasn't looked particularly quick to me

and Minnesota Martial Arts Academy really only has had success with guys who were freak athletes with strong wrestling when they showed up. I’m not super excited for this fight, McKee should take it in the usual fashion. I think a fight with Tyson Griffin would be better, but that’s my suggestion for almost every UFC debut.

I suggest the same thing

except its always either Griffin or Guida.

I think that Guida vs. McKee would be better than Griffin in this case though. Griffin hasn’t really been relying on his wrestling lately and losing terribly.

by av1o3 on Oct 2, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Griffin is a solid striker with decent takedowns

but his speed and scrambling ability are what make it interesting. Guida got out-wrestled by Florian, his defense really isn’t great and calling his striking rudimentary would be generous. Guida is a good test for strikers, Griffin is a good test for wrestlers, and both are VERY menacing gatekeepers to the upper echelon of the division.

interesting

this tells me they’ve got McKee on the slower “show me” track rather than pushing him forward. They’re giving him a good wrester right off the bat. Won’t be able to lay and pray Volkmann.

Based on McKee's previous comments about his fighting style...

I don’t blame the UFC for putting him on that track. No need to throw a bunch of effort behind a guy who is more than happy to LnP to a decision.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

McKee is going to crush Volkmann, although he won’t finish him.

Sherk/McKee is the only fight that makes sense. Two greatest lay and prayers ever.

I agree with you.

But in the “What have you done for me lately” world of MMA, people are having a very hard time getting the Mayhem fight out of their heads. While I understand why Shields fought that fight the way he did, it was the definition of Lay n Pray.

by The so-called Beautiful on Oct 2, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Call me crazy but I liked the Mayhem Shields fight. At times it was frustrating cause I was wanting Mayhem to win but Mayhem was just a tough fight for Shields. He is a hard guy to finish and that’s what people have to remember.

by Lunchbox15 on Oct 2, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you actually heard McKee's own comments on the matter?

He’s gone on the record before saying basically that what he does (very much a Lay n Pray style) works and he sees no reason to try and be remotely exciting just to make fans happy.

While in theory I agree, basing your fighting style on what makes fans happy won’t work well for anyone not named Lytle, his disdain for the fans in those comments isn’t something that is going to sit well with any promotion’s management…let alone fans…you know, the people paying for all this.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

by Razreshat on Oct 2, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He also mentioned that it doesn’t make sense for someone to put their body and brains on the line when the rewards are so small and the danger is so high. Kind of makes sense, actually. Though to be fair, he is really boring to watch. I just don’t hold it against him.

Random question: how much do you think the UFC actually holds being “boring” against fighters? Not that Edgar is super exciting, but do you think Maynard’s getting the shot after him because he’s “boring”? I understand from a promotional level that’s valid, but do you hold it against the UFC for caving to entertainment over real competition?

I didn’t see Sherk stop getting take downs for the sake of a better fight. He spent most of the second round looking for a double leg and being unable to do it because he was gassed. Happened in the Tyson Griffin fight too. And the fight with Edgar.

by VirtualBalboa on Oct 2, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

What does Jake Shields have to do with anything?

I think your sarcasm detector’s broken. Or my sarcasm emitter is broken.

Have you ever heard McKee talk about his style? His interviews are basically this: “Yeah I’m boring as fuck but I’m the best fighter in the world. I do everything GSP does except better.” Seriously. He admits he fights very conservatively and tries his best to avoid damage and hold the other guy down.

I was sort of joking about Sherk, but he is a grinder who doesn’t finish fights and is fairly conservative with his ground and pound. I love watching him fight, though, for whatever reason. I think because I like how hard he trains.

Well apparently

as Chris Nelson told me, Farnsworth made a few off-color comments in the Dream thread which really only warranted a warning. The problem is he had been warned a couple of times before, and with the most recent one he wrote an email back to Chris using “homophobic” language and threatening to basically just keep logging back on under a different alias. So yeah basically it’s like with Paul Daley, Chris said that in 3-6 months when the ban expires he can maybe come back if he’s calmed down a little.

by Razreshat on Oct 2, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not sure

I do agree with you that he SHOULD earn his way onto a main card but Im not sure that will happen. I imagine it will be on free prelims on Spike if it is a prelim fight if it isn’t on the main card.(That is if they do have free prelims on Spike for UFC 125.)
Christmas fought Paulo Thiago on the main card at UFC 106 and fought Martin Kampmann on the free prelims on Spike at UFC 108. That along with winning his last two prelim fights since dropping to lightweight makes me think that he should get a little exposure again. Even more so since he is fighting McKee who hasn’t lost since 2003. Love him or hate him I just think he deserves to be on the main card or Spike TV at the very least. Thoughts??

by Lunchbox15 on Oct 2, 2010 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

But wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a prelim. The problem with putting a guy like Mckee (who they expect to be boring) on the free spike prelims is that no one will want to buy the fights after watching 15 minutes of LnP.

Volkmann by sub

Volk is a friend of mine so I have an immediate bias.

But, I think his submission skills are a lot higher than he has let on. McKee will be tough for sure, he might have a edge on power, but Jake has some really interesting ground work, he will be able to improve his position from anywhere.

by dr. cagelove on Oct 2, 2010 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

Man, I was really wanting to see Sherk vs. McKee right away with all the smack talk Antonio has done over his 75+ years of MMA fighting.

This is a great “stepping stone” for McKee. His wrestling will just flat out dominate Volkmann’s and I like Christmas as well, just don’t see him winning this fight.

uuuh yeah I write for the Cincinnati Enquirer. Thanks?

We’ll see Volkman is tough and has been fighting top guys at 155 in his second fight it should be a nice intro fight for McKee.

How long before

McKee cracks the top 25 here:

I guess you could argue strength of schedule but there’s a lot of people ahead of him who have fought similar opponents with less success. I know it’s contingent on these rankers to put him higher, but I’d imagine there are quite a few people out there who think McKee could be a legit top 10 right now.

I just can’t rank him that high because of SOS. All he needs is one fight against a top guy and he gets ranked via the Overeem clause.
