I’m surprised that it’s still beating after those bombs by Overeem.

All the talk about MMA’s horrible striking compared to K-1 or boxing, this would be huge if Overeem won the WGP

by bigc4277 on Oct 2, 2010 8:02 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yea I really like what Overeem has done in the few K-1 fights he has had.

by bigc4277 on Oct 2, 2010 8:08 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think it'd say a lot more for Overeem than MMA

It’d get framed that he reached that K-1 level and then made Rogers (and the way he looked there, will make everyone in HW MMA) look like a child.

I love in the 3rd one where he pulls down Edwards’ guard with his left before firing the right.

Yea Edwards had a nice showing, is young and i hope they really try to build him up some

As a dutchman i am happy Alistair won!

But, i would love to give Edwards lots of credits, he is a future champion.

It disappoints me when some vocal people in cyberspace hide behind a pseudonym and make malicious and baseless attacks against athletes that have never failed a screen for banned substances. There's a full version of the fight up on Youtube now.

I would link it, but I’m not sure about the rules with regard to K-1. If even this post is in violation, please delete it.

Is Ben Edwards be considered a can?

by Bandaka on Oct 2, 2010 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Can?

Absolutely not. Overeem is one of the top 5 kickboxers in the world. Was Edwards a bit out of his league here? Sure. But he’s a talented fighter who has defeated some big names. No can.

He’s a good prospect, he broke Jerome Le Banners record for the regional K-1 World Tourney. He’s a tough guy.

Ten Count

Or whatever count they get. I forgot about it, having not watched much boxing and the rule not existing in MMA.

How do K1 boxers do long-term? Do they end up as punch-drunk as boxers? I worry about that guy’s health prospects when he keeps getting stood up so that he can get battered again.

Standing 8 count

Well guys like Aerts, Hoost aren’t punch drunk. It wouldn’t be as bad as boxing by virtue of more variables of targets to hit and that the rounds are normally between 2and 5 unlike boxing which goes can go up to 12.

Long Term Health

That’s an excellent question, and I would imagine it’s one we’ll see come up in the coming years. But so far I agree with Pandanus – we’ve yet to see any K-1 guys showing signs of long term mental damage. Fighters like Aerts and Le Banner have been in the top level of the sport for a LONG time – 15 years. And Le Banner in particular has been involved in some brutal fights. But you don’t have an Ali or Liddell type in K-1 (yet).

I’d say it’s a combination of the shorter fights, and the fact that top level kickboxers are not solely reliant on headshots to get the win – they also use body shots and leg kicks primarily. So in kickboxing even being KO’d doesn’t always mean suffering a big brain-rattling blow to the head. The 3 down rule also means that fights end by KO without a fighter getting concussed.

The three down rule sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the information.

Oh my god

Overeem has got to be the second most exciting K-1 HW these days, other than Badr Hari. The UFC HW division better watch out if he actually wins this.

Not sure if that would matter

He’s gotta be rated the top heavyweight striker already anyway—-it’d come down to his TD defense/guard.

I mean if he wins, he’ll probably stop demanding the UFC let him compete in K-1. If he’s learned to get up quickly or use his weight to defend takedowns… everyone’s fucked. Everyone.

I'd sure like to see him fight JDS before I made that determination

JDS is big enough, technical enough and hits hard enough to give Overeem real problems. One way or another it’d be a great fight.

by Dave Strummer on Oct 2, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Overeem would implement a similar plan he used on Rogers and Buentello.
As good as JDS offense is though he’s still quite hittable, Roy Nelson was tagging him with quite alot of overhand rights in their bout.

Personally I wanna see Cain vs Overeem.

by Pandanus on Oct 2, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

JDS has some really bad holes in his striking defense. I don’t think guys like Lesnar or Carwin will do anything about it (maybe Cain could), but I see it going something like Overeem/Edwards (but longer, and more back-and-forth).

Overeem's chin isn't bulletproof

Just because Nelson managed to leave that fight with JDS conscious, doesn’t mean that JDS couldn’t put Overeem to sleep.

If Roy Nelson can hit JDS with MULTIPLE overhandright

Overeem could put a clinic on him.

by Pandanus on Oct 2, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

Roy’s boxing is a lot better than people give him credit for, and JDS has always taken the approach of being willing to take a punch in order to give one. Overeem would undoubtedly hit him, but the interesting question is who gets the better of those exchanges.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

chuck was in his prime and overeem was a dehydrated 205er, not really relevant argument nowadays

by zuffazombie on Oct 4, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

JDS ridiculously outclasses Buentello and Rogers

He hits harder, with better accuracy and has much better takedown defense. He also doesn’t give up very much size to Overeem. IMO JDS has the edge punching and Overeem has the edge with kicks and knees. There is zero chance that Overeem rag-dolls and bullies JDS the way he did Rogers.

I think that fight would be a very evenly matched striking clinic.

Cain would be interesting, but I think he looks to plant Overeem on his ass early and keep him there.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Oct 2, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Like there was zero chance....

that Overeem rad-dolled Rogers? hahaha
JDS the edge punching? Please man, please!

by Sanderman on Oct 2, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Overeem was a huge favorite over Rogers

Nobody ever questioned that Overeem would be bigger, stronger and better than him in all phases.

As for punching, JDS, against superior competition, has knocked out 6 of his last 7 opponents (and yes, I’m counting Cro Cop’s submission due to strikes). Overeem mostly subbed people over that same span with only two KOs, including one by knee.

So yes, I think that JDS has better, more accurate, more powerful punches than Overeem, and I think he’s proved it.

I still think it would be a great fight, and a tough call, but it’s hardly as crazy as you make it out to be.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Oct 2, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Overeem is the overall better striker, punches included. The big difference between the two though, The Reem has MUCH better striking defense! JDS simply gets hit too much. Also Overeem has his nasty clinch, good TDD, a good guillotine and good ground game (if it were to go there), plus he’s still bigger and stronger. It would be a great match-up if it ever were to happen, but I honestly think Ubereem has the edge.

by Horselover Fat on Oct 2, 2010 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn

I went to bed last night several fights before the last one, hoping that Overeem would win simply win his fight.

I wake up and get online to find out that he damn near murdered the guy.

My hope of Overeem winning this year just got a lot more real.

I've only been training kickboxing for two years, but

Jesus, Edwards’ technique is terrible. It may be that he’d been rocked, but his hands are so low it’s like he’s trying to hide his nipples. Zero footwork. Zero head movement. Hey, I know, I’ll wing wild punches and then stand in front of Overeem and close my eyes, after all, it’s his turn! It seemed more like they were jousting that kickboxing.

Apologies if he’s better than what I just saw.

by Andy Davis on Oct 2, 2010 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

I havent seen his other fights...

but people are saying he’s the most skilled up and comer in K1. I think the way the video is edited just shows is the tail end where he’s already been battered and put down once. I wouldn’t expect anyone to be in top form after that.

by Horselover Fat on Oct 2, 2010 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

I'll buy that.

I just really want Overeem to succeed. I mean, now that Fedor is lost and seems to be contemplating retirement, Lesnar vs Overeem becomes the superfight I’m dying to see.

I’d like to see him win the 2010 Grand Prix, then fight on NYE and defeat as credible an opponent as possible(wouldn’t mind seeing him settle his trilogy with Kharitonov). From there, I’d want him to avenge his loss to Werdum in February-ish…then he can do a K-1 fight in Apirl(like last year) while Werdum has his rematch with Fedor, which Fedor will win, setting up the Fedor-Overeem fight…which Overeem will win, retiring Fedor…then SF will fold, Overeem will participate in and win the K-1 2011 GP, during which, his signing by the UFC will be announced, and his match up with the current UFC HW champ will be announced for the SuperBowl card.
