Frank Shamrock Says Dana White Is Not a Martial Artist
Frank Shamrock was on the MMA Hour today and had a lot to say about Dana White:
"The face of our sport is Dana White and out here in conservative New York, the way people think, bald-headed, tattoo'd, swearing people are just not a good representative of our brand and unfortunately people think that Dana White speaks for MMA, and they're confused. They don't know he speaks for the UFC. I don't think it's all on him, but we're entering a new era of social media and Dana is a very outspoken figure in every way, mostly with the f-bomb and all that. I'm a martial artist. To me, the art is the most important thing. I don't get the same thing from Dana, that's all."
...
"I don't believe that Dana White is a martial artist. I don't see a martial way that he is following."
Shamrock says he is moving to New York to educate legislators about Mixed Martial Arts.
"In no uncertain terms, what [New York politicians] have said is, 'The appearance of the sport is something we're not ready for,' and the appearance of the sport is Dana White and the UFC because no one else has been here in the media and explain it and has credibility, who's done it," Shamrock said.

Bull. When people say that, they’re talking about how Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc have revolutionized the way that the media presents itself to the public. Smart phones have played a part in that, but this “era,” in social revolution picked up in the last few years, which, as far as eras go, is not “we’ve been there for awhile now.”

Social media and social networking has been around long enough that we’re not entering it. We’re in, and we’ve been in for years. Myspace has been around since 2003 and relevant on a large scale since at least 2005. Facebook is now bigger and has been around since 2004 and relevant since shortly thereafter.

And you just left out the one that's revolutionizing this new era, Twitter.
Sorry, but when people refer to social networking in media, they’re referring to Twitter. That’s what “social,” with the public and the “media.” MySpace didn’t have much to do with interacting with public figures and employees, etc. Actually had nothing to do with them, basically. Save for a ton of bands and a few adventurous comedians and authors. Facebook is changing as a direct result of Twitter, including the “media,” part of it. So no, we haven’t been in this awhile, sir.

I don't hate Dana. He has done a lot.
My whole point has been that he could’ve done the same job, but without the negative aspects. He didn’t start acting like this until that one speech on TUF 1. He saw that it got over big with the internet and started playing up this persona. He wants to be a star (and now he is). That said, can’t be mad if people look at that and don’t want to be associated with that.

He is a promoter and voice for the fans. He has been fighting in New York for years to get legislature to back MMA and this election Nov. 2nd is going to determine a lot. MMA has been waiting for these elections for quite some time and Marc Ratner and the UFC have been pushing for legalization and regulation for quite some time. So you going to New York now mere days before these elections to help fight the good fight is a big late and uncalled for at this point thank you anyways leave the big business to the big boys.

Wow, I guess I am going to be the only one that actually agrees with Frank. Not that I think Frank is the best spokesperson or that he really doesn’t have an ulterior motive for “helping”, but people have to sit back and take a look at whose minds your trying to change and who’s going to be effective:
- A foul mouthed, spokesperson who rubs a lot of people the wrong way and obviously has a financial interest in the legalization of his sport
- (doesn’t have to be Frank) an actual mixed martial artist who is a well spoken, well informed and passionate defender of his sport and has no incentive besides seeing the sport he love grow.
From a PR perspective it’s a no brainer.

I've said this over and over.
Demian Maia, Kenny Florian, and Forrest Griffin. That’s your team for expanding MMA in the US. Smart, well spoken gentleman who are all top 10 and veteran competitors. Demian has a journalism degree and very good english, Kenny has been before government before and was instrumental in MA doing away with the double weigh in, and Forrest was Dana’s choice for the Dr. Phil show. Dana is a promoter, let him promote the individual shows and matchups. Put Lorenzo and the rest of this team in charge of public relations for the company and sport.

Cause I haven’t heard of any of this type of stuff yet. Marc Ratner is the main guy fighting the cause, with Dana fronting money for the politicians that will help to regulate MMA.

Thought about this.
Forrest on good behavior is one of the best ambassadors of the sport, period. Good behavior is the key. It’s hard to hold his books against him though, it’s a very flimsy premise. Rashad has a season of cursing and shit talk with Rampage as well as the dick grab when he fought Forrest and the “Rashad Dance” from season 2.

I would recommend that your spokesperson be someone who is not on the Zuffa payroll. Albany is a Byzantine, corrupt world of factions and egos. And they love confrontation almost as much as micromanaging. New York really elects the nanny state government. They have no problem protecting people from their base interests and many of them would love to ban boxing or make football more regulated. A lot of them are going to look at a legalization campaign pushed by Zuffa as merely a money grab by these men that promote human cockfighting. And a lot of them ain’t going to give a shit about how much money Zuffa brings to their coffers.
I think you’re better off by putting a respected fighter as your frontman outside of Zuffa. I don’t know if Zuffa and Milletich or whomever is out there, could come to a mutual agreement to assist each other, but in New York that would have your best chance.
At least in my opinion.
Interesting stance.
I don’t know NY politics particularly well so you may be right. Miletich is a solid commentator, but I’m not sure how political he is. Strength of personality is always important and while Pat has a very strong grasp on the sport, he just isn’t that charming.
What else would you suggest as being the unsung keys to regulation?

Also Randy. The only thing with Randy is, his presence is slightly… strong. With guys like Florian and Forrest and Maia, you’re not the least bit intimidated. With Randy, there’s this subtle dominance thing going on.

Go in with
Maia, Kenny, RIch and Forrest. The fact that Franklin and Forrest are to meet at 126 makes it all the more effective.

I really think your best bet with NY is a non-Zuffa employee. A lot the state legislators are going to look at it as challenge to block a company (especially Zuffa were they can pick and choose the ammo and reason to dislike them) trying to push through something that they don’t understand – and for a god damn profit! Those bastartds. That’s only a segment of them, but they’ll be enough to keep it out.
I don’t know who you use. If Matt Serra or Randy Couture weren’t with Zuffa, then I’d say there’s your team. You need people who can speak passionately about why they love mma. Explain that while it is dangerous it is actually no more dangerous than football or boxing, and that it is a true contest where they get to test themselves (hopefully he won’t be punch drunk). You definitely need the philosopher/warrior speaking for you in this case.
I read a really interesting article in Harpers a few months ago on the political situation in Albany. I was only vaguely familiar with the NY state situation before that, and it was pretty shocking. But everything you say seems consistent with what was in that article.
The only thing I’d add is that the budget crisis could still change things. It’s hard to get elected when you block anyone making a profit in bad economic times.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."

And...
1. Dana white isn’t tattooed
2. Does having a bald head really hurt how the sport is represented?
3. New York is overwhelmingly democratic state, not republican, so technically they aren’t really "conservative
4. If people can’t look past swearing from a promoter, and look at the sport for what it really is, then yes, MMA in NYstate is probably in trouble (that said…I think the garden, and hopefully HSBC arena, since I live in buffalo, will host an MMA event within 2 years.)

And "FUCK" is such a beautiful, versatile word.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
The real issues
1. Bob Reilly often points to the word “damage” being in the criteria for Pride judging back in the day. (Josh Barnett argued that translation was imprecise.)
2. UNITE HERE, a labor group that has issues with Station Casinos’ use of non-union labor, has registered to lobby against MMA in New York. (Station Casinos, of course, being the Fertittas’ company.)
3. New York’s legislature is beyond dysfunctional. They actually slipped MMA regulation into a budget proposal because that would HAVE to be voted on at some point, while a specific MMA-regulation bill could easily be tied up. Still hasn’t worked yet.
Then comes the “violence in society/won’t somebody think of the children” arguments.
Way behind all that in the priority list of issues is Dana’s image.
I’ve asked other promoters from Atencio to Coker if they’d like to lead the charge instead. Not really.
None of this rules out Frank as a potentially effective spokesman for the sport in NY. But doing so while trying to score political points against Dana would probably undermine his cause.
Okay if we're going to start criticizing other people's performance and future worth to the sport
Then Frank needs to stop commentating. He is the leading cause of ear bleeding and brain hemorrhages.
DANA sucks
The UFC is making the wrong aproch for mma, and it’s making the life of all the fighter hard around the globe, and I think that Frank is the right guy to change it !
Seriously?
