The book officially closes on the preliminary round as history repeats itself and Cheick Kongo defeats Mirko Filipovic. No rest for the wicked though, as the Frenchman is featured today in our first quarterfinal match.

#1 Brock Lesnar vs. #8 Cheick Kongo would certainly be battle of physical specimens, but that might be as intriguing as it gets. I'll just come right out and say that I can't imagine a single way Kongo wins this fight. Hell I'll go out on a limb and say you can't either. I sincerely don't mean to come off as blatantly dismissive of Kongo; he has a respectable record with a couple of bright spots on it, but he's never had a nightmare as bad as this matchup would be. Let's not pretend that taking down a bewildered Paul Buentello means Kongo has patched the biggest hole in his game. As soon as Kongo even considered throwing a strike, the two of them would be sailing through the air with Lesnar's hands clasped behind Cheick's knees.
And once they landed? I honestly have no idea how submission-savvy Kongo is or isn't, but I know that during four-plus years in the UFC, he hasn't tapped a single opponent. To be fair, he probably never needed to, but it would be absolutely his only hope while spending about twelve to fourteen minutes with his back to the mat. Lesnar all the way.
Tomorrow's poll will be posted later than usual as I'll be doing some time zone hopping this weekend. But please keep an eye out for it; it's a good matchup and I had fun writing it up.
