hell yes

could be a great fight, if melvin doesn’t play it tentative again.

Yves is quick enough, and slick enough with his footwork, that he would nullify that tactic. He’s not going to following Melvin around wildly winging haymakers like Stephens did.

why do they sign alves who is an exciting and technical striker and then throw him all high level wrestlers…i know its mma but give the guy some styles matches to get people excited.

edwards vs guillard is a great fight. go yves!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I wanted both guys to keep on winning, but going with Yves for sure.

West coast sucks a dick. 2Pac had nothing on Big and Easy E and Magic Johnson got HIV cause West Coast broads are dirty as hell. I wish I was from New Jersey because the shitty bagels and pizza I have out here are making my butthole bleed.

rec’d just for suggesting the possibility — however slight — of an yves title run

I was of the opinion that the winner of Guillard/ Stephens was to take a step of the LW ladder. Now don"t get me wrong, I’m an admirer of thug-jitsu, but Guillard doesn’t seem to be taking a step up here; if anything it’s a step back. I guess Dana & Co weren’t to impressed by the stick and move gamplan Guillard displayed against Stephens.

It's not a "step up" in terms of "level"...

…but it’s an interesting test for a developing fighter. I like this quite a bit.

Melvin’s days as an up and coming prospect who gets put on the fast track are gone.

He failed enough times on his way up the ladder earlier in his career that he lost the right to a quick title push. He’s got to put in the work if he wants a title shot, and that means taking whatever fight the UFC offers him and racking up a hefty win total.

Oh my god.

Oh my god oh my god oh my god.

This is a fantastic fight (hopefully).

That line was played out well before Rampage fought Rashad.

One of my favorite things to watch in the UFC

I don’t understand why they would put him up against Edwards after he’s pulled off 3 wins against B-level fighters.
Melvin needs to prove that he can take on some top 10 fighters like Jim Miller or Evan Dunham.

after he’s pulled off 3 wins against B-level fighters.

Let’s not get carried away.

He beat two Octagon virgins (Torres, Lowe) and one B level fighter (Stephens). Yves is a major step up from Torres & Lowe.

Should be a great fight.

Yves looked great in his last fight.

I wouldve liked G-Sot vs Melvin and Yves vs J-Lau.

Step down for Guillard.

Yves should get Jeremy Stephens and Guillard should get Cole Miller or someone moving up like he is.

by Dustin Luff on Oct 14, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I think Yves is a toughter fight for Melvin than

Cole Miller. Beating Dan Lauzon and Ross Pearson doesn’t exactly mean that Cole is “moving up”/ Yves has faced much tougher competition than Guillard has over their respective careers…it’s hardly a step down for Melvin.

WHEW

For any hardcore fan this is a great fight. I am always excited to see Yves in the cage. Hopefully he can rise to occasion and show he’s still go it…

by Brandon Heer on Oct 14, 2010 6:35 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure why melvin isnt getting a stepup in competition?? I think melvin takes this easily. I dont see yves as the same fighter as he used to be since he was handled pretty easily by mike the beast cambell who was cut by the wec.

by mlzybaby on Oct 14, 2010 6:39 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Not like Guillard is dominating his opponents

except for that one guy who was new to the UFC. A lot of people believe that he lost against Stephens and that fight against Torres was pretty close too.

by av1o3 on Oct 14, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

If you think Yves was "handled pretty easily" by Campbell,

you probably never saw that fight. It was very close, and many people, including the live-blogger on this site, scored it for Yves. Who has Melvin been beating that he deserves a “step up”? Stephens isn’t exactly a top-ranked lightweight, and barely edging him on points doesn’t earn Guillard anything.

by Scott Haber on Oct 14, 2010 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

jesus you can tell the guys who haven't watched the sport long

Melvin has won 3 of his last 4 or 5 wins by controversial decision. He’s barely squeaking by guys who are gatekeepers and now he deserves a shot at a top ten fighter?

I guess there are more Guillard fans than I thought.

by mcpeepants23200 on Oct 14, 2010 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

I’m a big Guillard fan but I think fans need to understand that their arbitrary assignments of “tiers” to fighters really don’t matter. Once you beat a guy at this stage then you move to a guy on this stage…etc.

That’s not how Joe Silva and the UFC do things.

Fighters are given tests of different a different nature. Beating Yves proves that Guillard can beat a well rounded veteran. Last time he was tested against the fellow young stand-and-bang guy. Before that he was getting tested by the wrestlers and ground fighters. It’s not a matter of moving up the ladder for these guys all the time, it’s figuring out where they are overall.
