Folayang and Colossa Clash at Martial Combat 12
Two world class fighters from very different backgrounds are set to collide at Martial Combat 12. Eduard Folayang is a Wushu champion from the Philippines andVuyisile Colossa is a Muay Thai champion from South Africa. Stylistically these two could not be more different but they have both put in a string of fine performances inside the cage.
Folayang is the URCC Welterweight champion and already has two wins for Martial Combat. Colossa only made his MMA debut in May but he already has wins by both submission and stoppage to his name. He caught the eye with a particularly impressive display at Martial Combat 7 when he picked apart Chinese fighter Alex Niu.
It was obvious from that performance that Colossa’s striking skills were just as effective in the cage as they have been in the Muay Thai ring, where he holds a win over Contender Asia winner Yodsaenklai Fairtex.
He will face a major examination of his MMA credentials when he faces Folayang on October 16th. The Filipino is rated as one of the most exciting prospects in the region. He has an outstanding record of 8-1 and already has three wins to his name in 2010. Folayang will definitely be the favourite going into this fight but Colossa believes he has got what it takes to upset the odds,
“It is going to be one of those great fights in MMA. We are both talented fighters and it is definitely going to be good to watch. Fighting is all about taking chances and I want to fight strong opponents like Folayang because beating them will make me stronger. My ambition is to be the greatest MMA fighter in the world and this is my moment,” he said.
Beating Folayang would be a major statement of intent by Colossa but the Filipino has ambitions of his own. He had a torrid time against Chinese fighter Bao She Ri Gu Leng, losing the first two rounds but rallying to take the fight, and feels he is a better fighter as a result of this experience,
“Honestly I knew nothing about Bao She Ri Gu Leng going into that fight but I learned a lot from it and I think I improved as a result. I have seen some of Colossa’s fights and he is a good fighter. I am prepared for every aspect of the fight whether standing up or on the ground and my strategy will depend on the way he chooses to fight me. He is a dangerous opponent because he is a good striker,” he said.
These two men had both proven themselves long before they first began fighting for Martial Combat. Since being given the opportunity to showcase their skills at Resorts World Sentosa they have demonstrated that they have all the necessary skills to reach the top of the MMA ladder.
Once man’s journey will get a considerable boost at Martial Combat 12 while the others will be rudely interrupted. Over the course of the Martial Combat series we have learned a lot about who the best MMA fighters in the region really are. Now is the time for two of them to test their skills against one another. Folayang and Colossa have both demonstrated that they belong amongst the sport’s elite but only one man will emerge victorious on October 16th. Seldom can a fight of the magnitude have taken place in Singapore. Folayang vs Colossa is a mouth watering match up and it is fitting that the final Martial Combat show of 2010 should be graced with a fight of such significance.

rec’d… For what it’s worth, I have spoken to a few guys who have said that the UFC is interested in signing Eduard, but Alvin Aguilar, president of the URCC have decided to give Eduard a few more bouts in Asia to get more exposure and experience first… Kinda weird though, I thought he’d jump at the chance at having a Filipino born and raised in the country to represent them.
A good manager protects his fighter. If Folayang got a shot at the UFC and lost his first two fights what good would that do his career? He has the potential to fight at that level but he is not there yet.

Alvin doesnt want to let go of his biggest star that easy.

I'm hoping James' reason is the real reason why he did that.
cause it would suck if he really just didn’t want to lose his biggest star.

Would you know if Folayang has a wrestling coach here?

I think it's the same as his Wushu/San Shou coach.
cause they integrate takedowns anyway… I’m not sure about his jiujitsu coach, but they do train with submission sport from time to time.

If ever Folayang signs up with UFC, I truly hope he manages to train at the top camps. It is going to be a struggle.

He's heading to China to train with their top Sanda coaches
after this Martial Combat fight.

Thanks for giving us such great coverage of Martial Combat
Wish there was a way to watch MC here in the States, seems like they’ve put on some good fights, and it’s great to see MMA growing in a region that seems like it could produce some great talent.
Isn’t Ole Laursen also fighting on this card? Been a fan of his since the Genki fight.

I think the key for Folayang will be to put Colossa on his back but Colossa holds a submission win over a decorated grappler so he is no slouch on the ground and I think his stand up is better than Folayang’s. This is a very interesting fight, I actually think Colossa has the potential to go a long way in MMA but it all depends on how good his ground game and wrestling is.

nah,
It’s gonna be by GnP as usual. From what I’ve seen, he has very good hands, but I am not that impressed with Colossa’s takedown defense and jits.

Folayang via whatever. I couldn’t care any less as long as he wins.

Colossa is a beast
He used to be my PT at the MMA gym I was training at in HK and he has the fastest hands I have ever seen.
folayang is becoming a wrestler/ground specialist in all MC shows. is it due to his opponents high-level striking? or is it due to him wanting to show that he’s a well-rounded fighter?
Majority of Folayang's wins have always been by ground and pound.

It’s a good base because MMA at the moment is dominated by wrestlers with a good level of BJJ. I think the Asian fighters tend to have a level of stand up which would probably be good enough for the big promotions but their wrestling and BJJ is well behind. That’s one of the reasons you very rarely see any of th Evolve guys lose a fight.
