That’s pretty awesome.
I wish I would be greeted at the airport with flowers and a severed hand.
I could be sitting here with just pee stains on my rug.

I believe that’s one of Overeems legs playing drums on the left.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
Very cool. She looks pretty surprised. Hilarious that Mom and Grandma have a bit of a WTF? thing going on. “This shit ain’t ladylike!!!”
What's this war in the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? The land contend with the sea? Is there an avenging power in nature? Not one power, but two?

Awwwww
So cute that they think a strikeforce belt means something!
Get rid of the ramp!

Because the UFC's 135lbs Women's Champ is so much better.
Oh wait she doesn’t exist.
Jesus Christ, yeah SF is second rate but c’mon. She just won the most prestigious belt at her weight class right now. And she got a hero’s welcome. How often do we see that in America? Barely at all. Seriously, the woman just accomplished more than you will in your life and her friends, family and countrymen came out to support her stop hating for like 10 minutes to appreciate something that’s amazing.

Exactly. Contrary to popular belief, the Strikeforce 135lb Womens Title actually means something just in the fact that no other MMA organization has that division. Also, Strikeforce is just about the only MMA organization where female fighters can get national television exposure. Moreover, that division actually has some of the best collection of talent in that division that is available like Meisha Tate, Hitomi Akano, Carina Damm, Shayna Baszler, Sarah Kaufman, Roxanne Modaferri, Takayo Hashi, etc. We are only now really starting to see top female fighters fighting each other regularly.

Frankie Edgar got a parade when he came home from Abu Dhabi.
We're talking about women here.
Men get parades for being champ all the time. Machida did when he won, Shogun did when he won etc.

So we got one American man and two Brazilians.
How often is that? Did Randy get parades? GSP? Anderson Silva? Forrest Griffin? Rashad? Rampage? Nope.
yes!!!!!
I Won THOUSANDS of dollars!!!! I’m a thousand-aire and the lowest paid champ in history!!!!

Yeah, because it’s all about the money. It has nothing to do with her being a great competitor fighting in a sport that she loves. She fought a great fight and subbed a woman who had never lost a fight before. I think she has every right to be celebrated, and I’m happy to see her receive such a welcome. There doesn’t always have to be negativity brought into every situation.

she should be appreciated and celebrated
That’s the point. I enjoy womens mma but the disparity between her pay and kaufmans and or an unkown male fighter on the untelevised undercard of a fight night is horrid. And I’m sorry. It is about the money. That’s why were employed. No one works for free. 3k is a little insulting for a champ.

This has been said by people like Jordan Breen on Sherdog and other MMA journalists, but the pay that is shown by the Athletic Commissions is NOT representative of what a fighter is actually paid. Considering that Coenen is an overseas fighter, and this applies to many fighters overseas, there are taxes that they need to pay that U.S. fighters wouldn’t have to. While we may not see a report about it, Marloes most likely was paid under the table so that she doesn’t have to pay these high taxes. The same happened to Mousasi. You may want to ask/email someone in the know about why Coenen was paid as much as she did and how much she most likely did get paid, and not just assume.

wow
Man everybodys so quick to defend her paycheck when half the time everyone is bitching about fighters pay. I dunno how you can judge me as not being “in the know” and “assuming” since u don’t know me at all but I realize under the table bonuses happen all the time. I’m not stupid. Just on paper as reported its a bit demoralizing to womens mma.
by ronrod on Oct 13, 2010 3:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I apologize for that. Your comment made it seem like you really didn’t know why she was getting paid only 3k, but that was ironically a bad “assumption” on my part.

There is nothing illegal about paying foreign fighters a big up-front fee (like a signing bonus) in order to minimize their tax burden on fight night.
I thought income had to be taxed. Is the bonus not like the tip I give my waitress? She may not claim it and get away with it but it is taxable income. I could be wrong just sounds a little off.

wow! i cant believe their are negative comments on this thread.
congrats to Marloes!

I suspect it’s more to do with the common BJJ/sub grappling expression that you “take your opponent’s arm home” when you submit them by armlock – breaking the arm or not has nothing to do with it.

People compete in the Olympics for free. It’s not about the money. She’s at the top of the 135lb ladies division. I say that’s a pretty major accomplishment.
Did you see the size of that chicken?
I don’t know that strikeforce is comparable to the olympics. The glory of winning on a world stage is much greater than winning in front of a small hardcore base of mma fans on a premium cable channel.
by ronrod on Oct 13, 2010 11:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s the biggest stage in the world for what she does, so yeah, it’s comparable.

Don’t be naïve. People in the olympics get paid. Sponsorships wheaties boxes advertising etc. I don’t believe olympians do it for the money but they do get paid.
by ronrod on Oct 13, 2010 11:12 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
As a one time high level amateur athlete
I can absolutely guaruntee that the vast majority of Olympians get by on just enough money to buy food and pay for training; only a tiny minority get good sponsorship deals.

Wow a guy named drunken cutman is an ex-olympian hopeful? That’s awesome. I’m not saying they’re rich. But if midcard ufc guys get let’s say 10 to 20k by sponsors for a fight on ppv with 500k buys you’re saying an olympian performing on network tv for a few days in interviews etc in front of a worldwide audience gets less? Proof please. I need to see it. I can admit I’m wrong. Just show me.

I have fenced for Britain
But knew would never get close to OLympic success, so quit.
I do know a good few guys who made it, and a lot of them really struggled financially, even during their peaks.
you’re saying an olympian performing on network tv for a few days in interviews etc in front of a worldwide audience gets less?
Most Olympic sports have very strict non – sponsorship rules. Do you see any ads on Phelps’ speedos, or on Hoy’s cycle shorts? So, where then is this money coming from?
Even if there was event – based sponsorship money, that would come to one decent pay day every four years, not exactly enough to live off.
The rest of the funding comes from Government grants and governing body support, which usually doesn’t amount to much of anything. A very small, and priveleged few, who have exceptional talent, can make huge money from ads. People like Bolt, for example.
However, the guys coming in 2nd and below usually just scrape by.

![Jason "Mayhem" Miller talks to Ben Fowlkes about his latest skirmish with Nick Diaz backstage after Diaz vs Noons 2:
"I had just finished doing interviews in the back room, and I was walking the same way that he was coming down, and I was actually going to be like, 'Hey, good job, Nick.' But he's coming towards me and he starts mad-dogging me! I was like, really? You're really going to mad-dog me right now? You just fought for 25 minutes! Before I knew it, he had a water bottle hidden down by his side and he threw it at me. I moved out of the way and it hit [training partner] Ryan Parsons in the stomach. I was like, 'Man Ryan, he doesn't like you.' Then we got into some kind of juvenile 'F--- you' match. I was like, 'F--- you bro, you're not even going to do anything.... Actually, as he was walking off or being ushered off, I was like, 'Hey, it's cool, just stay at 170.' Since that's his whole thing is, he won't fight me because he's at 170 [pounds]. Even though he'll fight KJ [Noons], who's not at 170. That's cool for KJ to have to come up, but he won't fight me even though he's talking all this sh-t on me for like five years now, and jumped me on national television. I've been begging for the fight. If the fight doesn't happen it's not my fault. It's not Strikeforce's fault, because they want it. So that leaves one person. Don't be scared, homie."
