After the Griffin fight,

I would give ANYTHING for another highlight reel KTFO win from Gomi. :)

Yeah...while not an official rule...

any time you fall and can’t even try to use your arms/hands to stop yourself, the fight should be over.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

by Razreshat on Oct 11, 2010 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t believe that punch landed.

Gomi started winding that thing up when he was still back home in Japan. That shot against Griffin and Jeremy Stephens uppercut against Dos Anjos have to be the two slowest punches in the history of punching. As fun as those two KO’s were, they are exhibits 1a and 1b on how amateurish MMA striking can be.

by Steve4192 on Oct 11, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

You can’t time a haymaker better than Gomi did with that punch. It lands just as Griffin is getting his foot back down on the mat. Also because it’s a lead hook, it is already a million times better than the crappy looping rights favored by the likes of Josh Koscheck and Gray Maynard. It is much harder to defend a well timed counter hook, than a big slow-developing power punch.

Both fighters were a little sloppy in that fight, but Gomi knew what he was doing with that punch, and he knew those exchanges would favor him. With so many MMA fighters being so lousy with their lead hands, Gomi is well ahead of most guys, especially in that division.

this card is shaping up super well i have to say

say what you will about maynard v. edgar, i am quite excited for that fight, though i certainly do not expect a finish and it may not be exciting, i’m still very interested.

all the rest of the announced fights look great.

by Clifford J on Oct 11, 2010 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

yep,

I’m pretty excited for all of those fights listed there… (not too much on the main event, but it’s not bad)

by Anton Tabuena on Oct 11, 2010 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m liking the card. I’m also going to go out on a limb and say Guida vs Gomi will be a #1 contenders match.
- the fight is on the undercard of a LW title fight making it easier to hype the next challenger.
- both fighters will be on either a 2 or 3 fight win streak if they win.
- they are probably the two most marketable fighters in line for a title match.

by John Nash on Oct 11, 2010 3:29 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

wouldn't be surprised if Gomi wins,

but if it’s Guida? Not so sure about that, unless he wins very impressively on this one.

by Anton Tabuena on Oct 11, 2010 3:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Guida will have won 3 in a row and 6 of his last 8 with only losses to KenFlo and Diego Sanchez. And more importantly who else could help sell a fight at lw?

by John Nash on Oct 11, 2010 3:40 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Sots won't sell,

but he’s more deserving, and if he wins impressively next, I think he gets that marketing push.

The reason I like the Edgar v Maynard fight...

is it gives Edgar a chance early in his title reign to shut up his detractors, or lose the belt.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

by Razreshat on Oct 11, 2010 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

As one of Frankie's detractors

I don’t see how this fight shuts me up. If Frankie KOs Maynard, or takes him down and submits him, I will have to rethink my position on him, but I’d bet my house against either of those outcomes coming to pass.

If Frankie wins it will be by controlling distance, avoiding Maynard’s clinch and take-downs and peppering him with low-damage, high-volume strikes for 25 minutes.

Frankly, I think the guy who has the most potential to shut up his detractors in this fight is Maynard, who could impress folks if he can stop Edgar, but I think that’s a pretty low probability too.

I’ll bet folding money that it goes 25 minutes and that my opinion of both fighters doesn’t change at all.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

I couldn’t see Roy winning that fight anyways tbh. Maybe if he weathered the 1st round storm, Lesnar-style, but thats a huge IF.

by Dustin Luff on Oct 11, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

why?

he took all that Dos Santos could muster for 3 rounds. I’m pretty sure he’s a durable guy. Carwin hasn’t exactly shown that he can go hard for that long.

by Anton Tabuena on Oct 11, 2010 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions

True,

but I always saw Carwin as having way more power than Dos Santos does. Like I said, if he could weather the storm like he did in that Dos Santos fight, more power to him. But thats a hell of a hurricane to survive through.

by Dustin Luff on Oct 11, 2010 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Trust me,

few people on earth throw with way more power than Dos Santos. The guy is far and away the best pure puncher at heavyweight. Carwin probably gets a little more power, but not THAT much more.

Why is Leben fighting Stann?

That’s a major step backwards considering Leben just beat Aaron Simpson and Sexyama. Leben’s one fight away from a contender fight.

by Dustin Luff on Oct 11, 2010 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

that would fuck up the rankings though. haha.

At this point I’ve resigned myself to not being mad as long as the right guy ends up winning. Everyone knows judging is completely fucked up, so it’s usually easier to focus your anger on fights where the wrong guy won (Dunham/Sherk) than rounds scored improperly.

Speaking of being pissed about judging you must be mad about Thomson/JZ.

When a ball goes into a net, it only means something because we decide it means something. When somebody punches somebody in the face it always means something.

by lowellthehammer on Oct 11, 2010 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

no, not really.

the 30-27 score was bogus and the guy should get slapped… but it was a pretty close fight that could’ve gone either way. 2 was definitely Josh’s, and 3 was definitely JZ’s…

First was very very close, and it really depends on how you score the sub attempts. Arm triangle was closer to being finished, and the arm in guillotine wasn’t really done properly (but JZ also had a knockdown)… I think it could go either way, or even a 10-10 round. Which makes me not pissed on a 29-28 for either fellow.

…on the Guillard fight, I actually think Stephens won the 1st (and the fight), but it just pisses me off to see that they gave him the third, which is the round that was surely Stephens’ cause melvin was just walking backwwards and doing nothing.

by Anton Tabuena on Oct 11, 2010 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Sub attempts were a wash.

Thomson didn’t turn the corner at all on the arm triangle, so I fail to see how that was closer to being finished. JZ had the knockdown, he wins the round.

When a ball goes into a net, it only means something because we decide it means something. When somebody punches somebody in the face it always means something.

by lowellthehammer on Oct 11, 2010 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Thomson had that sub on long enough that...

if it was going to work at all, JZ would have been asleep when the bell rung. The way JZ vaulted up, I don’t think it was all that bad.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

by Razreshat on Oct 11, 2010 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I get the feeling

that he’s trained the move before but not to the point that he’s comfortable with it, because it didn’t look like he had any idea how to finish it. He was just holding position and trying to convince the judges that he had JZ in trouble, which obviously worked.

When a ball goes into a net, it only means something because we decide it means something. When somebody punches somebody in the face it always means something.

by lowellthehammer on Oct 11, 2010 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Thomson didn’t turn the corner at all on the arm triangle, so I fail to see how that was closer to being finished.

Google the Ricky ‘Horror’ Story versus Brian Foster fight video. Arm triangle from inside the guard. Turning the corner is not always necessary, nor do guys always go out quickly. Sometimes sustained pressure and muscular endurance is all that is needed.

by eastcoastatlas on Oct 11, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I’m just saying you can’t write off Thomson’s arm triangle because he didn’t he didn’t the corner or because JZ didn’t go out quickly. The fact is, he had a legit catch and JZ was unable to escape before the round expired. That counts for something.

by Steve4192 on Oct 11, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Leben probably doesnt give a shit who he fights.

That being said, there is no way Stann wins this, because he doesnt have the technical boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, or cardio to make this a 3 round decision win which is basically one of the only ways to beat Leben other than knocking the shit out of him which is also out of Stann’s realm.

I see Leben winning this emphatically.

Good stylistic matchup for Gomi

The only thing “The Dude” has going for him is conditioning. That shouldn’t be much of a factor in a three round fight. Guida doesn’t have the takedowns to consistently put Gomi on his back. I think Gomi wins the decision.

Hey Gomi, Enjoy

wearing your snug-fitting Guida suit for three rounds.
Guida has an iron jaw, he’ll wobble like a weeble but you can’t knock him out, so Gomi is going to have to submit him to win. Gomi doesn’t have the cardio to dance away from the Caveman for fifteen minutes.
I love the Fireball Kid, but he has the wrong tools for this job.

Guida has an iron jaw

And Florian put him down right before he submitted him. Obviously, Florian was a bit more technical in the way he engaged Guida but if Kenny had enough power to put him down there’s no reason to suspect that Gomi can’t.
