Snapshot of the Day: Michael Bisping Leads the Attack at UFC 120

Britain has more fighters in the UFC than ever before but it’s still without title-belt glory. In this special collector’s issue Fighters Only Magazine asks, can Britain produce a UFC champion? Dan Hardy and Michael Bisping, this month’s dual cover-stars, are leading the attack.

The proper answer to the question is - Yes, but....

ten years from now, the UFC will claim that some new British fighter could become the first British champion ever.

It's pretty remarkable...

That Hardy is a WW and Bisping is a former LHW.
Hardy is a big son of a bitch. Even in the GSP fight he looked a weightclass bigger, and GSP isn’t a small guy.

Shotgun?

by Brent Ducharme on Oct 10, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly

John Hathaway is the best chance at a current British fighter winning the belt. The UFC has made it pretty clear that they want to keep testing him on the ground (having fought Rick Story and Diego Sanchez, originally being scheduled to face the Stun Gun and then being changed to submission guy Mike Pyle) to see if he’s well-rounded. They clearly don’t want to spend the marketing dollars on this kid until they know he won’t look completely incompetent on the ground against guys like Fitch and GSP (I mean I get GSP’s TD’s are on another level, but Jesus Christ Hardy didn’t even sprawl).

by Josh Grant on Oct 10, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was my initial thought.

Hathaway could manage it, especially with his youth and the likelihood of GSP retiring first. I guess the Pyle fight will tell us a little bit more…

Considering the tangled web of the welterweights, do we see an outside chance at the UFC hoping for a Hardy-Hathaway fight in Britain?

by Brent Ducharme on Oct 10, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

They'd never ever match them up.

They know that Hathaway has a chance to be a run-away star (good fighter, well spoken, and honestly pretty good looking) and would not want to chance Hardy knocking him out or even decisioning him because Hardy was a right-place-right-time contender and probably won’t advance to any further than gatekeeper.

I expect Hathaway to fight the winner of Nate Diaz vs Stun Gun if he can get by Mike Pyle and if he wins that it’s off to the top guys for Hathaway.

by Josh Grant on Oct 10, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, in light of the commitment to throwing grapplers at him particularly,

I definitely see the potential for the winner of that bout or something similar.

by Brent Ducharme on Oct 10, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

But I'm getting way ahead of myself.

Mike Pyle’s an older guy and all but he’s the only guy to submit Jon Fitch and he went the distance with Rampage in his first fight despite a significant weight difference. This is a huge test for Hathaway.

by Josh Grant on Oct 10, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely agree.

I believe it’s a test Hathaway will pass though.

by Brent Ducharme on Oct 10, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Until British fighters start regularly bringing in American training partners/Head over to America to improve their grappling abilities (But we all know thats Anti English, dont we Mike…), we’ll struggle to provide a fighter who can compete at the top end of the spectrum. Is it possible though? Absolutly. Agree that Hathaway currently looks our best bet given the fact he’s huge for his weight class and is seemingly quite a good grappler already, the best we have to offer anyway.

Battle of Isandlwana, the zulus kicked the redcoat’s ass, India also eventually evicted them from their lands as well.

Red Coats had their time in the colonial sun but often failed in spectacular ways due to their piss poor strategy, complete lack of stealth or attempt to conceal their numbers or moves and overall arrogance towards their opponents.

by DirtyML on Oct 10, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

All Empires Fall - Alexander, Rome, Mongol, Ottoman, British, etc.

I know the Zulus won a major victory over the Brits – how did the rest of the war go for them? That’s like saying since Custer was obliterated at Little Big Horn, that shows the supremacy of the Natives. And India evicted them peaceably, not by winning a war.

by Scott C. Broussard on Oct 10, 2010 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The rest of the war did not go well for them no, I agree, and the red coats did dominate the other opponents, but given their leverage on the world they did a terrible job of maintaining rule over it.

I was not suggesting that the Zulus won the war or anything absurd like that, but just that the Red Coats almost always ran into difficulty conquering their colonies.

I think the only empire that managed complete control over its territory was the Roman – if the emperor wanted something done in Briton, then it was done in Briton, dammit. It would be hard to control an empire as vast as the British one without modern communications. Personally, I’m most fascinated with the Mongols.

I’d guess the winner of Diaz vs Stun Gun. Be a logical step and gets to test Hathaway’s grappling again to make sure he’s ready for the big boys. And if he gets Diaz he also gets to deal with that awkward punching to see where his stand-up is.

Maybe the winner of Alves vs Howard.
