Douchey or not

at least it’s something. Guy is like living furniture. Completely lacking in any sort of personality. The best thing about his persona is probably this picture and the brawl with Mayhem on national television.

Why’s Jake got two EXC belts?

by Newman24 on Oct 1, 2010 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

The second belt is the one awarded to him for defending against Daley.

He needs to get past Kampmann first. If he does I hope Shields fights John Fitch. That would be sweet!

Shields - Fitch is a dangerous fight for everyone

They are well matched against each other, and we fans risk being stuck with one of the worst stand-up “battles” since idk what…

Shields yes Fitch no

Jake definitely has some of the worst hands in the divisions but Fitch is decent IMO. The guy was easily oustriking Saunders on the feet and was doing fine against Alves he just chooses to go to the ground.

If they were to just kickbox Fitch would outclass him for sure.

I like Jake Sheilds

I’m not sure why I like him, but I like him. And I think we will see him challenging GSP before long.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Oct 1, 2010 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

I like Shields too, because I watched all 10 of his TV fights.

Winning all 10, eight by finish, 6 in first round. Wins over Henderson, Lawler, Daley, Sakurai, Menne, “Charuto”, Condit, Okami, Kikuchi, “Mayhem”, Thompson, Imada, Pyle etc.

Shields kept himself in top 10 opponents by winning and defending four Championships, and by going 15lbs above his normal fighting weight when there were no more challenges at WW.

That is a tough one for me...

Kampmann has a very under-rated overall game imo, and Shields’ takedowns, while very good, are not exactly GSP-esq.

Shields has no stand-up game to speak of, although surviving that shot from Hendo was pretty damn impressive to me.

Shields seemed to have resolved questions about his gas tank against Mayhem, and that was a 5-rounder.

Can’t wait to see this one honestly, but I can’t really see a path to victory for Kampmann here.

by The American Ronin on Oct 1, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I can

Shields isnt a god on the ground. Miller showed some momentsa against him, and nearly RNC’d him if not for the bell. Kampmann has shown good TDD, good takedowns, and an overrall good ground game before. If he is able to keep it standing, he wins. His technical striking will pick apart Shields all day if he keeps the fight vertical.

On the feet Kampmann wins with ease, but frankly if Miller had Shields’ takedown ability, he beats Kampmann rather easily…not sure why that guy doesn’t get more love (maybe his media whore approach?), but Mayhem is an outstanding grappler, is tough as shit and has held his own against some of the best bjj for mma guys in the world.

by The American Ronin on Oct 1, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Shields has Kampmann outclassed on the ground, and I don’t think Martin has the wrestling to stop his takedowns or the KO power to knock Jake out before the takedown.

As far as Jake’s takedown’s not being the same claiber as GSP, I’m not so sure about that. When was the last time someone stuffed one of his takedowns? Jake might not get flashy high-impact slams, but he gets his opponents to the ground seemingly at will. I’d be willing to bet his takedown success rate rivals that of GSP.

by Steve4192 on Oct 1, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Thing is though Kampmann can probably grapple enough to get out of bad spots and get the fights where he needs it to be. I mean Paulo Thiago is from Nova “Super BJJ” Unaio and Kampmann out-jitzed the hell out of him for their entire bout.

by Josh Grant on Oct 1, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

What has shown to you that Shields is that much better of a ground fighter? Kampmann has never shown a glaring weakness in the wrestling department. And IIRC, Mayhem even slammed Shields down a few times. Martin has shown good clinch wrestling before and he dominated a BJJ black belt easily his last fight.

Kampmann is no joke

I think he was under-rated coming into the Thiago fight, but perhaps a bit over-rated now.

Having said that, Mayhem would have his way on the ground with Kampmann just as easily as Shields will.

by The American Ronin on Oct 1, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I largely agree

If Hendo couldn’t get the flash KO, Kampmann is certainly not going to. Shields should have his way with him on the ground, and I can’t think of anyone even remotely considered a top mma wrestler kampmann has faced to see his TDD.

I don’t think anyone has the sort of explosive, all-but-impossible to stop take downs GSP has, but Shields probably does have enough to get martin down.

by The American Ronin on Oct 1, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Its just my considered opinion, but

Shields has the wrestling that thiago (and most bjj guys) lacks. His bjj is better suited to mma than thiago’s as well imo.

But there is no evidence to show that Kampmann lacks the wrestling needed agaunst Shields. And he has what shields lacks: striking. He may not KO shields, but if his wrestling can keep the fight up he will pick him apart

Perhaps not,

But there is certainly no evidence to suggest he does have any high level wrestling chops, either in his background or his mma career.

There is no evidence for JDS either, and it will surprise just as many people if not more when he finally meets an elite mma wrestler…

However there isn’t anything showing he has a glaring weakness in his wrestling, and has shown quite functional wrestling before against legit WW’s and MW’s. Shields however has shown a glaring weakness in his striking. While Shields may be able to outgrapple Kampmann, Kampmann has shown good skills both where Shields is strong (grappling) and weak (striking). This gives him more options and allows him to use a more diverse offensive arsenal.

Maybe I’m just not remembering some fights, but when has Kampmann faced anyone with good mma wrestling skills where he showed anything that makes you think this?

Shields’ stand up borders on the comical I’ll grant, but…

Just over his career he hasn’t had problems with wrestling. He has shown good TDD before against Volkmann, and good takedowns vs Thiago. He hasn’t faced a great MMA wrestler, but he hasn’t shown any glaring weaknesses. I’m not saying Shields can’t take him down, but I don’t see any evidence that Kampmann is just gonna topple over. His TDD was good against Volkmann, who may not be a Fitch or a Shields but is a good wrestler. Kampmann also has good fight IQ IMO and he seems to fight good gameplans most of the time.

His standup is painful to watch. He is so tight. Im not knocking him, he is world class, but I would assume it would be better by now.

by nbs on Oct 1, 2010 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

His standup is why I think any of the top UFC WW wrestlers would beat him. Fitch and him are very similar, but Fitch would beat him do to the sole fact that Fitch would probably be able to negate his wrestling and strike

I'm just glad he's in the UFC now...

At least we’ll get to see how he stacks up against the top guys in the UFC. Kampmann is a good gauge of his abilities. If he can’t beat Kampmann, he won’t beat the top three. If he gets past Martin, I think they should put him up against Fitch or Alves.

by funkywanderer on Oct 1, 2010 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

Would love to see him beat Kampmann, then fight Fitch.

Fitch would annihilate him on the feet. People don’t seem to remember that Fitch gets most of his takedowns by clinching people and overwhelming them.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
