Sean Sherk vs. Clay Guida On Tap for the UFC's Versus Debut in March

image via SI.com

Two of the UFC's most tenacious lightweights will lock horns in Colorado on March 21st, when Clay Guida takes on former lightweight champion Sean Sherk at UFC Fight Night 21 in Broomfield, Colorado, which will be broadcast live on Versus.  Matt Erickson of the NW Indiana Times has the report:

A fight between former lightweight champion Sean Sherk and Chicago area native Clay Guida is in the works for March 21 on the UFC's Ultimate Fight Night card in Denver, sources close to Sherk's camp told The Times on Saturday -- though bout agreements have not yet been signed.

Sherk was penciled in for a bout with Rafaello Oliveira, who was then switched out for Jim Miller, at UFC 108, but Sherk suffered an injury in training.  This ends up as nearly a ten-month layoff for the Muscle Shark, who last saw action at UFC 98 last May in an upset loss to Frankie Edgar.

One of the UFC's most popular fighters, despite his less-than-stellar record against top competition, Guida has a style similar to Sherk in his prime, which makes this match-up even more intriguing.  Coming off a submission loss to Kenny Florian at UFC 107, Guida will perhaps be facing an even stiffer challenge in Sherk, who can likely match him in the wrestling department.  Although neither fighter has impressed with his striking, they may have no other option if their takedowns cancel each other out.

UFN 21 now includes:

Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera

Anthony Johnson vs. John Howard

Sean Sherk vs. Clay Guida

WORST BOXING EVER

Though this could be an excellent wrestling match – will Sherk be able to handle Guida if/when it hits the mat?

Eh

That’s a bit much. Sherk has decent boxing, but he should only rely on it if he has to. He doesn’t have much to speak of for a jab, but he’s a competent striker for a guy that has always been a GNP practitioner. Just not wise to swing those tiny arms around with the likes of Beej and the Gar (Edgar).

Truthfully, I am very intrigued by this match-up. If Sherk is done as a wrestler, will Guida be able to win on the ground? Sherk isn’t used to being on his back. I’ve also heard rumors (nothing substantial) that his knees are wearing out, so that’s why he’s boxing more. Either way, if the once-dominant wrestler is being outworked by one of the smaller LWs, his time may be over. If Sherk can stymie Guida’s attack, then is he still a top 155er? Where will Guida fall? Much to be seen from this fight.

Well considering its going to be extremely difficult for Guida to take Sherk down, there’s going to be some great sloppy boxing. Both guys will just be winging it at each other wildly.

i think they r putting a great card on so that many people will tune in to try to impress the brass at NBC. IN the hopes of getting a network deal? anythoughts?

Doesn’t Bellator already have a deal with NBC?

yes i think so but i dont belive it is live and i also think it is late night like strikeforce used to be

March is becoming stacked with mma

March 06 – WEC 47
March 07 – Sengoku 12
March 21 – UFN 21
March 27 – UFC 111
March 31 – UFN 22 and the debut of TUF 11.

Add all that up with the posibility of Strikeforce and/or Dream events and March is stacked.

by esuohlliM on Jan 9, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions

Just Versus.

Matt Hasselbeck's satellite TV signals would get intercepted.

by SSreporters on Jan 9, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

You’d think they’d want to get as many viewers as possible but I guess not. Not everyone has Versus so that’ll mean more streams.

Hopefully Sportsnet will have it then.

by esuohlliM on Jan 9, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

Well when you make a deal with Versus

you kind of have to honor it. I’m sure Versus wants the most possible viewers and so if they put it on Spike. Versus, who is pay for the event, wont get as many viewers.

by bigdmmafan on Jan 9, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

i think the ufc is just gonna show nbc the amount of viewers they can grab on versus to get that real good network deal we’ve been hoping for for a long time

imagine brocks return on nbc? stuff like this is real close to happening

oops i mean higher

by #1 piggy on Jan 9, 2010 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

let me know when it actually happens

People have been talking the UFC on network tv for a long time, a very long time and so I simply wont believe it until it goes down.

I’m pretty sure this has more to do trying to get Versus back Direc TV and on a lower tier on Dish because right now if you dont have Versus unless your a NHL or WEC fan your not missing much but if they put the UFC on Versus maybe some of the Olympics then people will want Versus more and start demanding it back from Direc TV and on a lower tier on Dish Network.

by bigdmmafan on Jan 9, 2010 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but i think it would be in versus best interest, to give directv a fair deal, so that they can have a larger audience to attract sponsers.IMO

by #1 piggy on Jan 9, 2010 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

that would be awesome espcially against FEDOR, ,haha i wish. We can dream cant we, but if that happned it most defiantly be on ppv.

by #1 piggy on Jan 9, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

see i can imagine dana takin a hit on profits to have brocks return on national television fedor on cbs is one thing but brock on nbc would be a entirely different story i could imagine it gettting a huge amount of viewers

dana would probably make brock on free tv a one time thing but it would definetely have the effect and draw many more fans to the sports

by #1 piggy on Jan 9, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

He has a tendency to try to box with people who have a much longer reach than him, a fact make more absurd when you take his wrestling skill into account

Also

his boxing isn’t that good, and he doesn’t seem to try to account for the fact that he has a short reach, he just goes for it

by #1 piggy on Jan 9, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't that good..

There’s a lot of room between terrible and awesome. Let’s be honest and call it decent. He doesn’t have KO power, but he’s competent. Have you seen anyone box with BJ like he did? That isn’t saying much, I know, but he was striking with him for a time. His boxing is okay, but it should only be relied on as a fall back.

Both of these fighters have incredible pace and cardio. Even if there wrestling nullifies, they will still be coming at each other the whole time. Worst case scenario we get a hard fought kick boxing match.

Great fight, I really hope that Guida’s days at Jackson’s are done he looked worse than he’s ever looked in his UFC career against Kenny. Time to go back to basics, Clay can outwork Sherk and get a win by doing just that sadly thanks to his knees Sean is no longer an elite LW so unless he lands something unexpected he’s going to be on the losing end again.
