Hermes Franca Announces His Retirement
Hermes Franca (19-8), following a TKO loss against Eric Wisely, announced his retirement from MMA:
His manager, Reed Wallace of White Chocolate Management, informed MMAWeekly.com of his fighter's decision late Friday night.
“The fans gave me the passion and strength that kept me competing at the championship levels for all these years. Without them, I couldn't have done it.
I owe it all to the fans,” said Franca, while indicating that his body just can't keep up with the demands of today's elite level fighters....the 35-year-old native of Forteleza, Brazil, native intends to rest briefly then return to training his students and fighters at his gym, East West Combat Club in Syracuse, N.Y.
Franca is looking forward to spending time with his family and developing business opportunities as he moves on to the next stage of his life.
The 35-year-old UFC veteran and former WEC Lightweight Champion has lost four of his last five bouts, with three of those coming from the top UFC lightweights, Frankie Edgar, Sean Sherk, and Tyson Griffin.
He's fought the who's who in his division during his nine year MMA career, and has quality victories over the likes of Mike Brown, Caol Uno, Toby Imada, Jamie Varner, Marcus Aurelio, Spencer Fisher, and Nate Diaz.

agreed, tough SOB
dangerous fighter everytime he stepped in the cage, heart the size of Texas….if not for Sean Sherk’s knees, he would’ve been champ….I wish him well in his post-ring life

Man, talk about falling off and falling rapidly. At least he realized it was over and pulled the trigger.

He was overweight slow in the Griffin fight, then got TKO’d by some dude in some random org. He may have put on a good fight, but since he retiring, I’m guessing he wasn’t too impressive then, either. He’s fallen.

Yeah, this is truly for the best. He had a good career and some amazing fights. I suggested yesterday that he should hang it up and I’m proud of him that he’s not too proud to know when he’s had enough. He has his own successful gym that he can now dedicate himself too. I just hope he doesn’t just let himself go (since he’s already showing signs of that), stays in shape and provides quality training to all of his pupils. I also hope he doesn’t take sideshow fights ala Mark Kerr to make a few extra dollars, because 2k isn’t worth the brain damage he could incur for taking fights on a whim after his prime fighting days are over. Best of luck to Hermes in life after MMA..

I was really hoping that he’d get to smash Aoki.

I was there to witness it live.
Hermes didn’t look all that bad really. He supposedly came in a couple lbs over but didn’t appear to be in bad shape. He kept it on the feet for about 30 secs and then had a takedown and landed some gnp and after a couple minutes left Eric stand cause he merely did anything except upkicks. Hermes dominated until then and was dropped right in front of us and took about 10-12 follow shots until it was stopped. Hermes was out and about after and seemed in good spirits.
