Very nice addition for the SF lightweight division.

Depends on the contract…it’s not in everyone’s. Like Hendo’s.

He wouldn’t sign an extension. That’s why he was out a year, the UFC sat on him.

To be clear, I’m not saying he doesn’t have the matching clause, only that it could easily have expired by now.

And, like nottheface said below, it was likely for 6 or 8 weeks, not a year.

I also don’t think it helped matters for browney points after his face was on the SI cover he demand he was worth BJ Penn type money if not more and wanted the UFC to renagotiate is contract.

Maybe UFC did not want to match the offer SF sent Hendo … i would be really surprised if such a common clause was not used in the contract of a main event fighter like Hendo!

by Fizz on Jan 8, 2010 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

There was a six week or two month period after his last fight were they could match, but now I believe he is a completely free agent.

by John Nash on Jan 8, 2010 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

You were correct, sir.

Additionally, sources close to the fighter indicated that a “matching clause” in Huerta’s UFC contract that doesn’t expire until November means the UFC retains the right to match any official offer the lightweight receives from an opposing organization.

Good for him.

Roger will never be a contender in the UFC and he knows it. He wants to be one of the highest paid LWs in the org he fights for, and in SF he would be.

Another exiting matchup for Melendez i cannot wait to see how this turns out!

I wonder why the UFC would leave yet another small main event type of guy to strikeforce… The addition of Gomi will most likely close the gap for the ufc..

Maybe it is a kind of retaliation from strikeforce whom i heard was really close to inking gomi before the UFC snatched him!

by Fizz on Jan 8, 2010 12:18 AM EST reply actions

He’d be a decent addition to SF, but I don’t think the UFC let a “main event” type of guy leave. If you mean, main event for Fight Night Cards, or SF cards, then sure, but if you meant UFC “main event” type of guy, then no…

I’d like to see him against Thomson first.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 8, 2010 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

Of course i was not talking about Huerta being a main event type of guy in the UFC but he shure is in SF… the UFN for that matter

by Fizz on Jan 8, 2010 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

I’d like to see him against KJ Noons.

I think he'd beat Noons.

I want him against Thomson, then if he impresses, maybe a title shot against whoever holds the belt.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 8, 2010 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

I’d rather save Thomson for Kawajiri.

If they are serious about Gil vs Aoki and Crusher vs. Thomson, then I’d like to see him against Vitor or Noons.

by John Nash on Jan 8, 2010 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

i'd be fine with either,

as long as he doesn’t move up and contend for the WW belt. :P

I was thinking more along the lines of Roger vs. JZ Cavalcante

by IRodC on Jan 8, 2010 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

That’d be pretty sweet. I’d take Roger by using some wrasslin’. But its a good matchup.

by Neil Manich on Jan 8, 2010 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

What?

No way, who could have ever predicted this. Tons of good fights for him at Strikeforce and DREAM. =)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 8, 2010 2:48 AM EST reply actions

Clearly Huerta would rather be the big fish in a little pond rather than a small fish in a big pond.

by argyle on Jan 8, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

He wouldn’t be the big fish in the Strikeforce’s LW pond. That is your first incorrect assumption.
=)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 8, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

I never said he would be. I said clearly he would rather be. He’s smart enough to know he can’t beat Penn, but shortsighted enough to not wait out Penn’s inevitable move up to WW.

Of course, he already lost to Maynard…
Of course, he already lost to Florian…

So, since he can’t become big fish in the big pond, instead of tilting at that windmill, he’s contemplating a smaller pond.

by argyle on Jan 8, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

No big surprise here, Roger is another guy more worried about things outside the cage than being the best inside. Basically the UFC sent him on his ass with 2 back to back losses in star making fights for both Kenny and Gray.

This is good

We can see him fight Aoki and get a guage on how good the UFC Lw division is compared to Japan!!!

Good stuff.

I don’t care where he goes as long as he fights. I would love to see him fight Sanchez or Guida. The position his arm was in in the last fight was disgusting and at the same time amazing. I love watching fighters with no quit.

Strikeforce continues it's growth

Excellent acquisition IMO. I’d love to see Josh Thomson fight Huerta for his come-around fight.

by moonlapse88 on Jan 8, 2010 6:35 PM EST reply actions

I’m excited to see how he stacks up against the dream and sf lw’s…. I think he’s the only real guy that will have come from the recent ufc lw div.
