Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Josh Gross tweets that Frankie Edgar, not Gray Maynard, is the possible contender to BJ Penn's crown in April.

[UPDATE] - "Edgar's management said nothing was done, and Maynard's performance could determine opponent. I'm hearing it's Edgar regardless."

BJ just wants to scrap. I’m all for it.

If Maynard wins Monday… I’d rather it be him since Maynard beat Edgar.

couldn’t agree more.. i’d be pissed if they gave it to edgar if maynard beats diaz. i honestly don’t understand why diaz and maynard are fighting….

by cagefightonacid on Jan 7, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

because diaz already beat maynard and will again

by mr. gogoplata on Jan 7, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

uhhh, exhibitions from tuf don’t count on anybody’s record….

by cagefightonacid on Jan 7, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

i figured it was joe silva’s way of seeing where maynard’s submission defense game is at, before he throws him in with penn. plus, the whole rematch angle.

by woooburn on Jan 7, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

ok, i can get down this that explanation

by cagefightonacid on Jan 7, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t like Maynard, and I am a big fan of Frankie Edgar, but if Maynard beats Diaz, I feel that Maynard deserves to fight Penn more than Edgar would. However, Penn is saying that he wants to fight in Abu Dhabi in March, and I have to wonder that it being January right now and Maynard fighting very soon that from January to March would be too quick of a turnaround for Maynard. Preparing for a fighter the caliber of Penn would take a lot of time (and Maynard could have a medical suspension or an injury from his fight against Diaz), so in that respect, I can see why the UFC would do Penn vs Edgar first.

Sounds good to me

For the most part, Frankie fights, wins and is entertaining.

And for the most part, Gray fights and wins.

If Maynard wins on Monday night, then jumping Edgar over him for the title shot is an utterly indefensible maneuver. It’s not like Edgar is some huge Lesnar-like draw, and the match is set for Abu Dhabi, not New Jersey. Those would be the only logical reasons for Edgar to leapfrog an undefeated fighter WHO BEAT HIM, and even those wouldn’t be tremendously valid given the circumstances.

In fact, I would argue that you could make more of a story out of Maynard/Penn, what with the whole TUF “student rises up to challenge the teacher” angle.

Past, boring performances stick with you, unfortunately

Just ask Okami (Before he was decisively thrown out of contention by Sonnen). He and Maynard even have similar personalities (I.E. Boring).

by 831 Son on Jan 7, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Ask Fitch also

It took Fitch eight straight wins in the UFC to get a shot at GSP. Also, it took him a while just to get his fights on the main card. Maynard seems to be able to finish other Lightweights on the feet especially with his size and power, but for some reason, he hasn’t been able to.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 7, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

They should give Maynard to Penn, and save Edgar for an inevitable Gomi title eliminator. Would make for a better fight and BJ is going to have to fight a Gomi/Someone next anyway.

by Ahhhoki on Jan 7, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Then I guess you’ll have to stop caring about the UFC LW division for a long time. And the WW and MW divisions as well.

by 831 Son on Jan 7, 2010 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Sweet, I was hoping it would be Edgar.

Dissapointing

I have trouble possibly conceiving a Edgar victory over Penn. At least with a monster like Maynard arguments could be made. Frankies gonna be just another bloody victim.

by imnotjohnlong on Jan 7, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Why would Edgar be the top contender? It should be Maynard. He beat Edgar.

Also Maynard is Undefeated and. I think its ridicules that Diaz gets a fight with Maynard after being beaten twice and then winning against Gulliard. Come on. Thats ridicules.

by J_Maddux on Jan 7, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

maynard beat edgar but diaz beat maynard
and edgar only lost 1 decision
while maynard got choked out

by mr. gogoplata on Jan 7, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Edgar

has better boxing and if you think maynard trying to wrestle penn wont get him submitted your kidding yourself.

by mr. gogoplata on Jan 7, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

I think his Tramp Stamp is causing Gray Maynard some visa problems in Abu Dhabi

by CaptnAmerca on Jan 7, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

How Maynard gets jumped in line is beyond me..

He is a very similar fighter to Edgar, except much, much bigger come fight time. Both have good boxing, whether people like to admit that about Maynard or not, and both are superior wrestlers.

Also, anyone who brings up Maynard getting sub’d by Diaz needs to remember that fight happened when Maynard was only training for a little over a year, and only had 2 professional fights. He now holds wins over Roger Huerta, Jim Miller, FRANKIE EDGAR, and Rich Clementi…

by Fedorable on Jan 7, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

I have no problem with Edgar getting the shot if Maynard loses to Diaz. However if Maynard wins, it would be somewhat difficult to justify giving the shot to Edgar instead, especially considering Maynard already has a convincing victory over Edgar. That said, I do think Edgar would make for a more interesting opponent for Penn, which may be all the justification the ufc needs.

I’m always really sceptical of these prospective matchup ‘reports’ that tell us nothing more than we can probably guess. I wonder if its actually people in the know, or just people speculating anyway. A lot of people on this board could have told you it would be one of the two…

by TLow on Jan 7, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Make Maynard fight Joe Daddy first

if he can beat joe he will be ready, despite beating edgar via decision i believe edgar has been beating higher caliber fighters including ex-lightweight champ S.Sherk.

by mr. gogoplata on Jan 7, 2010 2:44 PM EST reply actions

now that josh gross has said it will be frankie edgar, dana will switch it to anyone else.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

by MicahW on Jan 7, 2010 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Bear in mind that this all hinges on all three fighters remaining healthy:

If Maynard stops Diaz, he will fight Penn.

If Maynard goes to a decision with Diaz, Joe Silva will have to make a judgment call.

If you find yourself nodding off during that fight, it’s probably a good indication that Edgar will fight Penn.

This is the word from Dave Meltzer, more or less.

So Penn vs Frankie then.

by MickDawg on Jan 7, 2010 5:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I’m comfortable with either. People that are streaming tears over this seemed less up-in-arms about Gomi potentially fighting BJ next. Peculiar stuff..

Thats because the penn vs maynard/edgar fight is not that intriguing either way. gomi on the other hand would be pretty wacky.

How about Maynard vs Edgar II for the next title shot? Sounds fair, unless Nate pulls off the upset….

by The Blackula on Jan 7, 2010 6:51 PM EST reply actions

Nah.. I’m not a fan of eliminating contenders. They could potentially both get a shot.

With all there champions possibly being gone in a bit.. ie the spiders contract runs out and he retires, gsp goes to wrestling, brock is gone, BJ will be one of the only superstars left. If the UFC thinks that May-nards can beat him they will give him an easier fight first. Or it just might be they think May-Nards will try to Gaynard dryhump a win.

by Pain on Jan 7, 2010 8:33 PM EST reply actions

Waaaaaay too much hypothetical action going on here. Any one of those things is possible, two is plausible, three is totally unlikely, and trust me when I say the UFC has no “fear” that Maynard would go over on BJ. Edgar has the better striking and they have a relatively equal (though small) chance against him.

VOODOO!

You dont think Dana could be scared a little cuz of the voodoo esque state the UFC has been under for a bit?
