Dana White and James Toney meet behind closed doors:

Dana: "So you know how to check kicks and you know how to do all that?" (at the 3:45 min mark)
Toney: "Yeah, front kick, back kick, side check kick, all that."
Dana: "Umm....."

Kimbo vs Toney soon to be announced! :p

by Orcus on Jan 6, 2010 12:54 PM EST reply actions

Won't happen.

Kimbo is too valuable to the UFC to put him in there with a killer like Toney. They’ll pit him against a BJJ or Wrestler with good kicks to shut him up. Once he feels those kicks smashing into his thighs….OWWWW!!!! He’ll be ready to run out of the Octagon…but not until he gets gnp’d then submitted. Give him the full treatment….lol

by knowone on Jan 7, 2010 2:31 AM EST up reply actions

is this really gonna happen?

i mean dana brought royce gracie back which is arguably similar since it was a washed up fighter skilled at one martial art but who would he have toney fight? hes sayin heavyweight and roy nelson jumps to mind but im kinda lost as to who he should fight

by milk72 on Jan 6, 2010 12:54 PM EST reply actions

Royce had accomplished a lot in the UFC before that though. Regardless of when, he was a MMA pioneer, which Toney is not.

by TDITZ on Jan 6, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

yea but toney acomplished alot in boxing and early mma and current mma are basically completely different sports

by milk72 on Jan 6, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Except boxing is really a different sport than MMA or old MMA (ask Art Jimmerson).

"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."

by spectaa on Jan 6, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

true i said arguably similar not the same thing toney is a great boxer and royce was a great bjj practitioner both of them were skilled in one martial art and royce had big holes in the rest of his game and we can assume toney does as well

all im saying is its similar in the sense that dana could be bringing aother former great in his respective martial art to come in and get smashed in the ufc

by milk72 on Jan 6, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Royce had shown an ability to handle grapplers and strikers in Vale Tudo while Toney has not. He can handle punching. If he can show that he’s been trained for and capable of handling kicks, elbows, knees, grappling and submissions then I’m happy to see him in the UFC. Otherwise I think he belongs in Strikeforce or Japan.

JAMES TONEY VS ANDERSON SILVA!!!!!

by MicahW on Jan 6, 2010 12:58 PM EST reply actions

Good call

Anderson would get that boxing debut he’s been craving without breaking contract or prematurely retiring, and Toney will get annihilated. Win-win. MicahW for President.

by INGO B on Jan 6, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

He'd have to "box" at HW though,

cause Toney won’t even try trimming that belly to get to 205.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 6, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously?, I really want to know why Dana is interested in him lol. No doubt if it happens, It’ll be Toney vs Kimbo. Or if he wants someone to really fuck him up in MMA then I can see Roy.

by Who is Ryoto on Jan 6, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

i think Kimbo would get killed by Toney. Toney is slow now days, but i think Kimbo has more of a loose brawler style of striking, not a more crisp “sweet science” like Toney has. (but that is not to say MMA strikers couldn’t hang with boxers, im not saying that)

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

Or he could shoot, take him down and toney would tap after 10sec of GnP, cause he got no answer whatsoever.

I really want to know why Dana is interested in him

2 reasons as far as I can tell. I can only imagine that DW is truly a James Toney fan. And the other reason for talking with Toney is so he’ll stop heckling Dana in public.

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

by RoyalB on Jan 6, 2010 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I get why he's interested

It would be a fascinating and possibly lucrative fight. And perhaps he’s such a big James Toney fan that it adds to his willingness. But he lays it out there straight: it needs to be a CREDIBLE fight if he’s going to make it happen. And from the interview you can tell he’s trying REALLY hard to give this guy a chance, but can’t commit so long as Toney keeps ducking grappling questions and displaying a huge misunderstanding of kickboxing.

This is what I wonder: why doesn’t Dana white watch one of Toney’s MMA sparring sessions? If Toney can’t articulate his capability in MMA using the linguistic conventions of the sport, he won’t HAVE to articulate them if he shows what he can do in the gym.

I say that everyone calling it a thread should be perma-banned.

But to keep this thread on topic, I hope the UFC doesn’t do this, unless they’re planning on doing a show in Japan in the coming year. In that case, I’d like to see BJ Penn v. Toney.

by cmsove on Jan 6, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

now you’ve done it. BJ Penn’s brother will no doubt find your comment, show it to BJ. BJ will get excited and start begging DW for this fight… then it’ll sell 1 million PPV’s because lets be honest, we’re all a little curious who would win that fight. lol

back kick?

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

by MonkeyCHops on Jan 18, 2010 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

Excluding Tim Sylvia, Of Course

When it comes to James Toney, I think it’ll go alot like Ray Mercers’ fights outside of boxing. Musashi and Remy Bonjasky made him look awful in striking and Kimbo Slice beat him on the ground. Let’s let that sink in. Kimbo beat him on the ground.

Toney, if Dana White actually goes through with this, is going to have a really bad first time in the Octagon. He doesn’t sound like he’s pursuing any mixed martial arts training and I don’t think White will dredge up a striker with a non-existent ground game for him.

Slice vs. Toney keeps getting thrown around here, but I think White has other plans for Slice. Gilbert Yvel, if he hasn’t been cut yet, is the most likely candidate.

I keep trying to get excited for this. I mean, I crapped my pants for just about every round of the Super Hulk Tournament. I love me a freakshow. But James Toneys’ attitude and knowledge of the sport are really turning me off. I’ll tune in, yes…but only to watch him get take apart.

by troy_doney on Jan 6, 2010 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Yvel would crush Kimbo, I don’t think they’ll do that to Kimbo, I think they want to keep Kimbo as long as possible. Toney just seems like a great fight for Kimbo, and with a win it would raise his stocks a lot in front of casuals.

Whoops

I left a sentence out in there. I meant to imply that it’d be Toney vs. Yvel.

Though I agree, it would be a bad night for Kimbo to fight Gilbert.

by troy_doney on Jan 6, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

ah

yeah, but I think Yvel would also crush Toney and not gain much with it, whereas Kimbo would gain a lot more. But that’s just me :p

by troy_doney on Jan 6, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

the only reason I want to see him inside the octagon is if they put him against Kimbo. I don’t like the idea if they are thinking about giving him legit HW’s.

JDS hasn’t graduated to full blown contender yet, they could still put Santos vs Toney… that’s still intriguing.

I personally feel that JDS is a fight away from contention, putting him against a guy who is 0-0 in MMA is stepping down the ladder. I don’t think he’d ever agree to that fight if it was presented to him.

Bring back Houston Alexander and let Toney fight him. He’ll be the first opponent that Alexander has ever faced that has a ground game worse than his. Plus he’s completely expendable.

Pointless

To bring this guy in. And he called everyone who dares take the fight to the ground a lil fag. So whoever they put him in there with is gonna take him down and shut him up. Which then leads to a point for the mma side of the mma vs boxing legendary arguement. Then everyone will realize that the point is completely irrelevant because its what we already knew. Btw, wtf is a back kick

by kanodogg on Jan 6, 2010 2:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think the bigger issue was the "side check kick."

some people (mistakenly?) call turning back kick’s as back kicks, so that’s forgivable… but side check kick? dang!

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 6, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

After some googling...

I guess a side check kick looks like this ?

Anyone who fights him is fucked, because he can fight both ways: Punching and kicking!

by Tedd Welch on Jan 6, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

that's not a side check kick.. a side check, isn't a kick. It's a check.
Turn your lower body sidelong so your right shoulder is angled toward your opponent. Lift your right leg out to the side, blocking your opponent’s advance. Keep the foot raised above knee height and directly within your opponent’s path, the flat of your foot facing him. This is the side check. It effectively prevents your opponent from direct attacks; he will need to perform a spin kick to get around it.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 6, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

He probably meant side kick check…but damn I’ve had a good laugh when i’ve heard him saying it…
