Junior dos Santos Refuses Future Title Shot

If the Minotaur beat Cain Velasquez, would you slow the pace of fights, not to keep winning and force the UFC to match a fight between you?

I think my business has already stated that for the UFC. Even if they have this desire, this is unclear. It is a matter of training together, Rodrigo is my coach, he taught me everything from the beginning, I owe my career to him. He put me there, made me believe in myself. It’s a different situation, the guy is my teacher, and a great friend. A fight between me and him will not happen. I do not need to slow down the fights, he is in play for the belt because he will have good result on top of Velasquez. He will compete for the belt and I’m happy to be among the tops, making good fights and big names facing the UFC.

Star-divide

Maybe it's just me, but the respect shown from dos Santos appears to be something to be admired. These two clearly have a powerful relationship.

But with Lesnar's status in question, and the title in hiatus, if Nogueira were to put a couple of wins together, could dos Santos' decision to not compete for the belt negatively effect the Heavyweight division?

kinda misleading...

But yes, this could negatively affect the HW division. If Nog does beat Cain, then beats the winner of Carwin/Mir, he would be champ. If dos Santos also goes undefeated in the next fight or two this would leave him as the clear cut #1 contender, barring Lesnar’s return. If they would not fight in this situation, it would really be interesting to see if Dana actually tries to stick to his word and force teammates to fight one another.

How is it misleading? He clearly states that if Nogueira is in title contention, he will continue to fight tough fighters, but will not compete for the belt. “He will compete for the belt and I’m happy to be among the tops, making good fights and big names facing the UFC.”
At least I assume that’s what he means…

Sorry for the double post haha.
Actually, I guess I was somewhat misleading, inferring that he was offered a title shot.
Not what I intended. Just saying that if he were to be offered one, he would refuse it?
Sorry if that was in bad taste.

by Huggies on Jan 5, 2010 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

The title is misleading

You said “JDS refuses Title Shot” meaning that he already refused it.

Dos Santos will be champ in the future. He’s real deal.

by The Don Mega on Jan 5, 2010 9:26 PM EST reply actions

i wasnt too sure of JDS until saturday. he looked real impressive taking out such an experienced fighter (striker) in Yvel. as far as the division goes, he can still fight cain, carwin, mir, kongo, gonzaga or even struve without impacting nogeria’s title hopes.

in regards to the whole teammate vs. teammate situation; this is a little different. nogeria is more JDS’s teacher than just another fighter in the same camp. i have no issue with these two not wanting to fight.

by sadface on Jan 5, 2010 10:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Except that if he defeats Cain, Carwin, or Mir, does that not put him into title contention? Effecting Nogueira?

by Huggies on Jan 6, 2010 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

a win versus any of those guys puts him into the talk for a title shot.. but if he refuses to sign for a title match, he can still battle top tier guys. its not like these guys fight ten times a year and he destroys the division if he beats all the top guys. if you match him with kongo and JDS wins, you can match him with carwin or mir after that. hes young and knows hes the future of the division, his master has a small window to regain the title.

by sadface on Jan 6, 2010 1:04 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

he already fought struve

hence why i said “even struve.” if he puts a couple more win together a rematch wouldnt be the worse thing for either man.

i dont think nog has too much left anyway

i mean the guy has taken an absolute pounding in his career and hes on the wrong side of 30 JDS doesnt have to wait around for too long nogs got maybe a few fights and if he looses to velasquez i think that’ll start his decline

by milk72 on Jan 5, 2010 10:55 PM EST reply actions

Hmm

I wonder how many fights he has left on his contract. Because if Nog does end up with the HW strap, it seems like JDS would be in a very interesting career limbo.

Maybe to Strikeforce if Nog strikes HW gold??

Funny thing is

both Junior & Nog would be better acclimated for a cruiserweight (205-230ish) division anyway.

Probably

Though, if they have the opportunity to pick a division each, I think JDS would be better suited.

Yeah, I have no problem with Junior not wanting to stand opposite of Nog. Much different relationship as to Nog being his mentor and all. Will make things pretty difficult for Joey Cakes though, if he continues his winning ways and becomes #1 contender.

on the fence

i think sometimes it can be avoided because there are alot of other matches that can be made, but if it is for the belt, then i think they should fight. It aint no different than having a one on one basketball game, with legal elbows and kicks, hehe

by #1 piggy on Jan 6, 2010 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

It’s very different. Careers can be ended in fights. You have to go out there with the intent of hurting your opponent. Some people just aren’t capable of doing that, and that’s why they’re not fighters.
So when I fighter comes along, who is mentally stable enough to have a job that requires him to go and try to hurt people on a day-to-day basis, is there anything wrong with him not wanting to hurt his close friends?

Nog’s skills and reflex are getting slower while Mir’s standup is becoming very dangerous. I dont see any way Nog will win against Mir other than the perverbial Nogueira submission after taking 500 hits.

Let Nog get back in there and give it another go. If he fails it is Junior’s time.

by fozo on Jan 6, 2010 2:15 AM EST reply actions

I got the answer and I'm only partly kidding

Let him sign a three fight deal with Strikeforce on the condition that he gets to fight Fedor and his fights are on CBS. This is a win-win for everyone. Strikeforce needs top HWs and the UFC gets rid of a division destroyer for a year while at the same time letting their rival build up and promote their fighter only to have the UFC reap those rewards. As an added bonus, he probably has the best chance to beat Fedor outside of Brock and even if he loses he’s generally looked at (falsely I might add) as the 6th best HW in the UFC so Fedor’s upside for beating him wouldn’t be as great if any of the other HWs.

by John Nash on Jan 6, 2010 2:17 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I don’t see how that is a win-win.

Strikeforce needs legitimate challengers now, especially if Overeem dicks around anymore. Put JDS up against Bigfoot or Brett Rogers as his intro fight while Fedor fights werdum and now they have a great main event lined up. Coker is a happy camper. Obviously the idea that their major stars could leave after a few fights doesn’t keep him at night because he signed Fedor to only a three fight deal.
For the UFC sure it sucks to help out your rival but the alternative is worse if – and really only if – Big Nog wins. Then you got JDS knocking off all the top contenders.

by John Nash on Jan 6, 2010 2:33 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

You’re assuming he’ll defeat all of the top contenders. I just see a ton of good fights.

Tell you the truth I would take him over Cain Mir, and Carwin. I think those guys don’t matchup well with him. If Brock doesn’t come back or comes back at 63.27% strength and if Nog – again if – Big Nog wins the belt what’s that leave you?
I mean they would never really let him leave, and you would a crystal ball to see if everything was to unfold in such a way that you should have let him go, but I could see where him having fought the best of SF on CBS would end up being benificial to the UFC.

by John Nash on Jan 6, 2010 2:45 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

If Nog wins the title

I see Dos Santos being pitted against those who just faced Nogueira. It will avoid JDS from knocking out possible contenders for Nog and while having big fights for himself.

The more I think of the possible matchups

the more i wish for one major org. Imagine the HW division w/ Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Nogueira, Frank Mir, Alistair Overeem, Big Foot Silva, Fabricio Werdum, Brett Rogers, Shane Carwin, Junior Dos Santos, Gabriel Gonzaga, a clean Josh Barnett, Cain Velasquez, Andrei Arlovski and Brock Lesnar..

if i’m a billionaire, I’ll make this happen.

Don’t see the big issue shogun had epic fights in pride while allowing wandy to hold the belt. This will only be a issue if you believe nog and junior will beat all the top 10 heavyweights till they both are like gsp/penn/A.silva

by mr. gogoplata on Jan 6, 2010 5:05 PM EST reply actions

I dont see this being a problem for long. Nog is as a true legend and obviously a big part of Jr’s success but, I expect Nog to lose to Cain. The guy has got to be slowing down a lot by now and I just can’t see him handling Cain’s positioning and poundage. Even if he does win he’ s not going to to 3-0 over the rest of best.

by naturalist on Jan 6, 2010 5:56 PM EST reply actions

Exactly my thoughts, Nog is a legend, but him getting his hands on the title now… very unlikely.
