Kimbo Slice sells:
Factoring in replays and DVR views, His fight against Houston Alexander reached an average of 6 million viewers. That is up from the 5.2 million viewers that was initially reported.
Kimbo's two fights from TUF 10 are now part of the top 10 most watched fights in MMA history. He currently holds four of the top 10 with his two EliteXC bouts.
When will Kimbo fight next? MMA Junkie says he could be fighting on the March 21 card on Versus, which will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera.

MMA Weekly also has a similar article that also defines what Nielsen numbers are:
Nielsen numbers are in for The Ultimate Fighter finale. The Nielsen totals, which includes the live telecast and adds in all replays for the following seven days, pushed the average number of viewers for the Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson versus Houston Alexander fight up from 5.2 million for the live telecast to 6 million total.
Damn Kimbo, this dude went from wanting his bread to owning the bakery.

i really dont understand this at all
like why? why do people care about him so much? sometimes the human race is so dumb it blows my mind

I hear the Na'Vi factored for a few million views.
so it’s not just from the Humans.

If you look at the numbers from his fight with Roy Nelson and Houston, it seems his popularity is starting to wane. He’ll draw on Versus, but his numbers will keep shrinking if it doesn’t look like he making any progress in the UFC.
by John Nash on Jan 4, 2010 11:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
he did make some progress by beating Houston
by Anton Tabuena on Jan 4, 2010 11:47 PM EST up reply actions
He did, but in hindsight he was the perfect matchup for him. But if they feed him tailor made contests or bring in fighters for squash matches people are going to see through it and his popularity will take a hit. But if throw him against actual UFC caliber HWs he’s probably going to lose.
The other problem I see is even if they are able to pit him against the weakest fighters in the UFC and he wins some it’s going to hurt him with his broader fanbase who’ll through osmosis alone will begin to realize he isn’t the wrecking machine they thought he was.
Unless he really surprises us with the growth in his abilities I foresee I downward slope in his popularity.
by John Nash on Jan 5, 2010 12:10 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
That really won’t be an issue. How many people watched him lose to Petruzelli? How many people watched him lose to Nelson?
Still 6 million tuned in to see him again. those numbers can’t last forever, but it will take something very strange happening for the UFC to not get their monies worth and pick up a lot of fans along the way.
You’re right, the UFC will cash in. I just think Kimbo is losing steam and he’s two or three fights away from no longer being able to draw big numbers on TV, baring him actually getting good.

Why do people care about chuck? Why do people care about tito?
Don’t hate on the guy because he has charisma. He’s not the enemy, the enemy is your innermy.

Well, to be fair, Chuck and Tito were actually really, really good at MMA at one time...
as opposed to Kimbo who has never been as good as his falsely inflated reputation. Blame EXC for that particular part.
Kimbo is like pikachu except he can’t stand on anyone’s shoulder. He isn’t that strong but he entertains us. We’re waiting for him to evlove even if we know it’s not happening.
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
The man went for a rear naked choke in the Houston fight, I don’t know what kind of “evolution” you’re waiting for, but his last fight shocked me in terms of what he was doing in the fight.

Smart move putting Kimbo on Versus. Hopefully they promote the hell out of the WEC during the show so more people “discover” the joy of watching the little guys throw down.
Is this going to be a UFC card or a joint UFC/WEC event. I’m hoping they have one feather and one bantam fight to introduce the lighter weight fighters to some new fans.
by John Nash on Jan 4, 2010 11:38 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yea, I think the vs. move is pretty smart.
kimbo might be the thing that can get some more people to turn vs on, and if they can pull a big number on vs they will be shouting it from the mountain tops and telling the people at the networks/espn. not to mention that they’re sure to be shoving an upcoming wec card down our throats during that card, so he will help them out as well.
i dunno if you could say kimbo “sells” yet, he’s only been on free tv. not sure if people would be willing to shell out 50 bucks or whatever to watch him fight.
nobody said "Kimbo sells $50 UFC PPVs.."
but I guarantee the UFC made tons of money with those free Kimbo shows..

I think alot of where Kimbo gets viewership, is that the same people who saw him on youtube, go watch him on tv. I think he’d do significantly less on PPV. But, he would likely be a great supplement to go along with some big names.

no doubt it would shrink his viewership..
the UFC would crap their pants if 6 million people bought a PPV with kimbo slice..
I think he’d do pretty decent numbers in his PPV debut if he does well on his next fight, especially since he won’t be the headliner.

maybe… i’m still waiting for kimbo to one punch KO someone with his legendary power… think that tanks the only one he’s done that to.
guarantee the marketing was great and the money from sponsors demanded was more with Kimbo on board. he has 4 of the most 10 viewed fights in MMA HISTORY. talk about crossover appeal/curiousity.
kimbo’s gonna be unable to ride the youtube bareknuckle gravy train much longer….his fight with Houston was terrible….his fight with….oh yeah, all of his mma fights have underwhelmed in one fashion or another.

I don't know,
I know a lot of casuals that thought he looked awesome on that fight.. Especially on round two. I think he gets to ride the train a bit longer than you think,.

Kimbo's Cardio + Altitude = Not Good!
If Kimbo is going to be on the 3/21 card thats great, and I’m sure it will get ratings. Whats being over looked that that card will be in Denver. Kimbo is good for about 3-4 minutes of good fighting at sea level. How much is that going to be shortened due to altitude? So the UFC needs to find Kimbo an opponent that he can KO in about 30-45 seconds. Any suggestions?
All this business talk aside, that was a sweet Suplex.

I freely admit Kimbo intrigues me as a personality and I’ll happily tune in to see him fight.

I would like to see him fight again. That second round was nuts. Mostly because I was like, “Kimbo with a suplex? Kimbo with the mount and rear naked choke? Wut?”
Frankly, the more Kimbo stays a consistent ratings getter, the better. People tuned in to watch Kimbo, but they’ll see another four or five fights as well. That’s gotta count for something.
I love me some Sexyama!

exactly
I don’t get some of the Kimbo hate, he brings in the views
cagar é uma filosofia profunda...
a merda bate na água e a água bate na bunda.
Agreed.
As long as he’s not being pushed as the epitome of the modern MMA fighter, he’s a really interesting guy to watch as a character and a person. Most of the Kimbo hate is residual from his EXC days, when we were told he was one of the (if not THE) baddest things to enter a cage.
We all understand why they did it, but it doesn’t make it much less deplorable.

I really would like to see the difference
Kimbo on PPV
and Lesnar on free t.v.

Lesnar on free TV would be sick. Especially if it was Lesnar-Mir III or something, we’re talking some big numbers.

lesnar of free PPV would make records for sure...
but it would also be a waste since they’d make bigger money breaking PPV records… UNLESS, on “free TV” means the likes of CBS, etc…

DirecTV and Versus better have settled by the time this airs. It’s already bad enough I have to miss WEC, but Jon Jones? Now we have a problem.
