"I'm here. We can do this. I was waiting for [Dana White] to give me a call and quit dodging me," Toney told Ariel Helwani from AOL FanHouse. "This will be the biggest fight ever, period. The biggest event."

"Of all the guys they've tried to bring [over] from boxing, either guy who were shot or too old. James Toney is the real deal," White told Rogers SportsNet's Joe Ferraro. "He's a nasty, mean dude. We're going to sit down and talk tonight."

So 41 isn’t too old? Please, the last thing MMA needs is a spectacle like this on the sport’s biggest stage.

to be fair, he isn't THAT shot yet...

he is the IBA Heavyweight champ… (it’s no Ring belt, but still a title)

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 3, 2010 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

dude...

he is fucking SHOOOOT.

1 minute and my post will be up on SBNation.com explaining why and I can go into details here

well I guess that's why they (or I personally) say

that we are just Manny fans, and not Boxing fans.. I don’t know much about the other guys who aren’t remotely close to Manny’s division.

GTFO here

Physique aside, his skill is gone, like completely.

what?

James Tomey is a washed up boxer with an eating disorder; seriously, he’s a mess. DW should not be entertaining this at all.

Wonder why Dana wouldn’t return his call?

by ufc4 on Jan 3, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly...

I’d be shocked if it wasn’t so that he’d have a guy of decent recent name value come over from boxing and get crushed.

That’s what I was thinking too. Sign the guy, book a big PPV, let him get mauled and then cut him and point out how poorly a boxer did in MMA.

That possibility certainly does exist. And any boxer in smaller gloves with their technique present a very real KO threat. However, Mercer was always a huge puncher. Toney, not so much. But yeah, he still could sleep a guy in light gloves.

kimbo vs toney

is a win win…. one of them is going to get knocked out, just like houston vs kimbo. wait a sec…

by cagefightonacid on Jan 3, 2010 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well obviously you wouldn’t bring back superheavyweight Tim Sylvia to fight him. You would feed him to someone who would obviously just go in and take him out or someone where the loss wouldn’t hurt the company that much(say Kimbo?).

by who me on Jan 3, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

I’d imagine if they want to keep him around and get him a win or two they’ll put him in with Kimbo. If they want to get him out of there they’ll put him in with someone real.

I was joking

because when I first read that, I actually read it as “Let me eat Dana.” As in, Todd Duffee is a cannibal who wants to feast on the flesh of his fight promoter. Changed the meaning a bit. Like how punctuation and capitalization make a huge difference in “I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse.”

Since 2006 Toney has:
- Fought to an awful draw with the awful Hasim Rahman in one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen.
- Been outpointed by Sam Peter twice despite Peter not exactly being the kind of boxer that would have ever outpointed Toney in the past.
- Won a split decision over Danny Batchelder who was riding high on a 1-3 streak coming into the fight and has lost 2 more fights since the loss. Many boxing reporters had him losing the fight. After the fight Toney tested positive for steroids for the second time (the first was in 2005 against John Ruiz).
- Had a no contest due to cutting Hasim Rahman with a headbutt early in the fight.
- Won a split decision over Fres Oquendo that many (including SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook) had Toney losing by a wide margin.
- Was hurt by 12-5 Matthew Greer in his last fight before stopping him.

- From my piece on this over at SBNation.com

If Dana is going to tell me THAT guy isn’t shot? …eeeeeh.

I wouldn’t get too upset about how Dana reacted yesterday. He was put on the sport and the guy was right there. Dana may run into PR problems with his mouth, but he isn’t going to say that toney is washed up and can’t fight to his face.

by Phildo on Jan 3, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

True

Toney may be old but I bet he could still kick Dana’s ass.

by Bandaka on Jan 3, 2010 11:59 AM EST reply actions

Throw him in there with Mir, Carwin or even Lesnar, clown him out, collect your PPV earnings and send him home.

by who me on Jan 3, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

You seem to be under the impression Toney is a PPV draw- he’s not- or that he has some sort of following- he doesn’t.

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

by The Lethal Haze on Jan 3, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I am under no impression of that at all I just know that if the UFC promoted “Boxer vs MMA fighter” then the casual fans would open up their wallets. Particularly if they put boxer X against someone who could draw like Mir or Lesnar (or best of all Kimbo). You can replace Toney with any aging washed up boxer in that situation, it’s what he does not who he is that would catch casual fan attention.

by who me on Jan 3, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

toney vs kimbo

that would guarantee to do huge ppv numbers. it would be a fuckin shitshow thats for sure but id still watch.

Charity

For sh*ts and giggles, have Toney v Anderson Silva and the proceeds of the card go towards a charity (or Toney’s hospital bill, anyone’s choice)

by MMA42 on Jan 3, 2010 12:34 PM EST reply actions

Dana: Hey Mr Silva I know we never came through with Roy Jones jr fight for you but I’ve got the fat washed up boxer that wants a UFC fight that you can have…..Anderson……hello? I think he hung up on me.

The sad part is

that RJJ is more washed up than Toney.

by xbuckeyex05 on Jan 3, 2010 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

They’re both way past prime but to say that about RJJ is unfair. His last two losses were to Danny Green and Joe Clazhage, his last win was Jeff Lacy… Toney hasn’t fought anyone near that level in since about 2005.

he weighed 217 for the Greer fight

If he could get to 205 he’d be somewhat in-shape and I’d like a fight with James Irvin

No MMA fighter

can stand with a good boxer. But the cool thing about mma is its not boxing and you dont have to stand. Boxers win boxing matches, mma fighters win mma matches. If you box in a cage the boxer wins. This is stupid.

by ryanwk628 on Jan 3, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

Not so much.

Under MMA rules Muay thai pwns boxing. If Toney can’t check a leg kick he’d get destroyed. Ask Rampage.
