Thoughts on the Future Coming Out of UFC 108

Photo

UFC 108 delivered a lot of quick and exciting finishes before falling a bit flat in the main event.  There are plenty of recaps around, so let's focus on what's next.

For Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson is up next, and I'm told it's tentatively scheduled for UFC 114 in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend.  It will be a monster fight, and I think they intend to bring back UFC: Primetime to build it.  Whereas many were writing Jackson off just a few weeks ago, there's a renewed and surging view that Jackson has the tools to finish Rashad.  Thiago Silva's inability to finish Rashad saved the UFC millions of dollars in 2010.

I don't think Thiago Silva will get hurt too badly as a result of this loss.  He made it exciting in the third round, and I think it makes sense to match him up against Rich Franklin in May or June.  Another option is a fight with the winner of Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones.

Paul Daley got a huge win tonight, and made himself a pretty big "bad guy" star with his shotgun antics after the fight.  Note to fighters that want to make money in this business: don't apologize for being a lunatic, that is what sells, and if you sell you make money.  Dana suggested matching Daley up against Fitch or Koscheck, which would be a very serious test of Daley's claim that he's improved his takedown defense since his fight with Jake Shields.  Personally, I'd rather see him fight Thiago Alves.  That would be pure fireworks and a hell of a fun fight.

The only other fighter really worth discussing coming off of this card is Junior Dos Santos, who put Gilbert Yvel away fairly easily.  The next test for him should be the winner of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez, but Dos Santos won't fight Nogueira.  If Cain wins that is the best match possible, but if Nogueira wins perhaps they could match Dos Santos up with his original opponent for UFC 108, Gabriel Gonzaga.

Rampage has once again become a hero for the foolish MMA masses despite him being the real a-hole between the two.

I could honestly give a shit about what goes on outside of the Octagon. Last night, Rashad was an a-hole inside the octagon.

Rampage vs Rashad should be epic. I hope it lives up to all the hype that the UFC builds.

Fitch/Alves are already scheduled for a rematch, which means Daley will get Koscheck assuming Koscheck’s injury isn’t that bad. Terrible, terrible matchup for Daley fans; I see Koscheck finishing that fight in a hurry.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Five knuckles says this might be for UFC 113, not 114… He didn’t mention anything about sources though, just that Dana said it was for May (which hosts both 113 and 114)..

As reported yesterday, UFC President Dana White said that the fight would “probably” happen in March. However, he has since stated that the organization is leaning towards UFC 113 in Montreal, Canada, which would take place on the first day of the month.

“We’re thinking maybe, probably May,” White said. “That’s going to be a sick card up there.”

I was most surprised that Dustin chose to stand with Daley.
That was just bizarre. Dos Santos is a bad motherfucker, and we’ve never even seen him on the ground. I would really like to see how he does with a powerful wrestler.
Sam Stout looked awesome, as did Jim Miller. It was a fun fucking card

The Cain fight would have been really good. It wouldn’t show how he’d deal with the 40 pound weight difference, but it might have showed a little takedown defense or skill on the ground. So far everyone has either gotten quickly knocked out or hasn’t wanted to take the fight to the ground.

After two seasons of seeing Rampage suck as a coach and having his guys lose would anyone want to be on his team? I guess that really could lead to an interesting reality show.

TUF Season 12 – Success Despite Rampage.

Each episode, one fighter gets coached by Rampage – including having to stand any and all verbal abuse Rampage decides is funny and/or appropriate. At the end of the episode, the contestant fights against a reject from previous TUF seasons (there’s plenty of those to go around). He has to follow Rampage’s instructions during the entire match. Winners of the matches get contracts to appear in the Final.

The whole "The sky is falling" for the UFC

is much to do about nothing, if what I saw in the bar last night was any indication. The bar was packed, and most anyone I talked to couldn’t name a single fighter on the card. They were just there to see GOOD FIGHTS, which, if the screaming was any indication, the UFC delivered. IDK if any of these people would put money down for a PPV at there house, but they were most definitely there to watch UFC, not contenders vying for a title shot, a fighter making a comeback, hot prospects on the rise… they were there to see good fights.

If the UFC has some sort of deal where they get a % of the bar receipts for businesses playing their events, “weak” PPV #s (especially considering that they’re only weak compared to previous monster UFCs) really don’t mean all that much at all.

To counter anecdotal evidence with anecdotal evidence, my dad was at a BWW here in the Chicagoland area and it wasn’t packed at all. And most of the crowd paid more attention to the Blackhawks game. BWW’s are usually PACKED in this area for a fight.

I was at a bar in Hollywood and the crowd was much smaller than most UFC fights. Even less than UFC 106 or the Affliction fights! But this was, of course in Hollywood were half the people have left town during holidays. So it’s anecdotal with a caveat.

Okay

I had to work early this morning so I recorded the PPV part of the fights while the group I usually watch it with went to a sports bar to watch it. I woke up to a text from one of them saying the Silva/Evans fight was fixed. Went to church and another one of the group was saying the same thing and he explained what had happened. Well, what I saw is nothing like how he explained it and I can’t see how anybody thought that it was fixed. He said the whole bar was saying it was fixed and I told him none of the blogs were saying anything about it. He said he knows that and was disappointed with that. I watched the fight and saw Silva get gassed out and not be able to finish Rashad. What do you guys think?

When someone is saying that the fights are fixed the best way to deal with them is to send them off on a tangentally more stupid conspiracy theory.

Guy: These fights are fixed.
You: Yah well that’s what the Lizad Illuminati Pope wanted you to think when he built the pyramids with Napoleon in 1807.
Guy: Your conspiracy theory is way more stupid than mine. I must know more.
