They’re gonna charge $5 more than a UFC PPV? No thanks, I’ll pass.

Over/Under

What do you guys think the over/under is on PPV buys for this one? 125k?

When does the UFC charge $39.99?

I think they’re charging $5 UNDER a UFC PPV card.

I misheard the audio and had it at $49.99 when I first posted the video.

by Nick Thomas on Jan 29, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yea.. this could turn out to be an epic FAIL if they plan on charging that much! No way will people pay that. $30-$40 they could get by with but $50 is pushing it.

by Mirjitsu on Jan 29, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

This is retarted business practice! How are they thinking they will have a full card worth $50 freakin dollars? They should have put their toes in the water to check the temperature, because they might get burned here!

For $20 or $25 I probably woulda watched, guess ill be here for the play by play!

Hope this fails miserably

$19.95 max for this

by SplitBreast on Jan 29, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

definitely sounds like he's saying "44.95, same price" to me

but regardless, they are still out of their damn minds with that decision. unless the card is absolutely stacked, with several title defenses, i can’t see that many people paying that much.

by woooburn on Jan 29, 2010 2:24 PM EST reply actions

My question is why in May?

We have Mayweather vs Mosely on the 1st, UFC 113 on the 8th, and UFC 114 on the 29th. No matter who else they put on this card it will come in fourth on the list of must buys for the month. How many fight fans will still have money to purchase this card if they’re already spending $150 on the other 3 events? And even worse they’ll probably end up going up against a Strikeforce card, which is basically free.
My guess is that it will bomb, which is unfortunate since I am a big fan of a lot of the WEC fighters.

by John Nash on Jan 29, 2010 2:27 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

If Strikeforce is smart...

then they’ll do exactly what you indicated… Strikeforce show on CBS or Showtime against the WEC PPV. Then we get to see if Zuffa will counter-program itself by putting UFC on Spike to counter Strikeforce which is itself countering WEC!

I still need to watch the interview, but this sounds like it has “worst idea since YAMMA” written all over it.

If Strikeforce is smart…

Thanks for the disclaimer, I didn’t even have to read the comment to know it wouldn’t come true.

Yeah, fuckin' idiots...

Putting a football player on a card right before the Super Bowl and having him do ESPN appearances, a primetime series to introduce their future top fighters, a builder division that is separately branded, cornering the Us market on female MMA, and hijacking UFC’s Vera-Couture hype for their own Vera-Couture fight… They clearly are incapable of making smart decisions.

I guess we can also throw in Juan Manuel Marquez vs Amir Khan on May 15th. Not a big fight, but that means less bars will be willing to show the WEC fights if they decide to go with JMM/Khan instead.

by John Nash on Jan 29, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Did you...

even listen to the interview? He said $44.99, which I still think is too much.

by William Wilson on Jan 29, 2010 2:30 PM EST reply actions

I suspect they realize there will be a weaning period of low buys, as they have no marketing to casuals and their fanbase is kinda pissed at having to pay for what was once free milk. That said, even if it does 50000 buys, that’s a lotta money for the WEC.

I love the WEC but there is no way people will pay that much for the ppv.

I'll definitely be buying this PPV

I’ve refrained from buying the last several lackluster UFC PPVs but I expect the full card for WEC48 to be very entertaining.

Think; It's not illegal yet.

is if they have 11 or 12 fights and they show every single one… wait i’d still be iffy

I’ve paid 29.99 for Yamma Pit Fighting and Ultimate Chaos so I don’t mind shelling out 44.95 for Faber/Aldo.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 29, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Damn, big mistake on the pricing, especially in such a jam packed MMA month.

$19.95 – $24.95 and that’s about it.

Even when the WEC is on FREE Versus it pulls in around 600k viewers. Paring it down to only the hardcore fans will reduce the buys to a sub-100k buy number.

by NateDouble on Jan 29, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

This is going to bomb worse than the XFL.

The WEC is not nearly popular enough to make this a pay-per-view. But I guess we as consumers have to pay for everything IF we want to watch it.

I won’t watch it….legally.

Brian Russell would bite on play-action despite the QB being in an empty backfield.

by SSreporters on Jan 29, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

I wonder how many people would be excited to be spending $45 on a ppv with Aldo/Faber as the main event if Thiago Silva/Rashad Evans and Yvel/JDS was on the undercard? Or Torres/Bowles with Coleman/Couture as the co-main event? Too bad we couldn’t somehow merge these cards together.

by John Nash on Jan 29, 2010 3:30 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Maybe it’s a ploy to shut up all the WEC guys belly aching about getting UFC PPV type money. This event will flop, the WEC will wash their hands of PPV events and stick to VS. When the next guy opens his mouth about PPV buyrate % based paydays, WEC brass will reference this event as a huge failure, since the aforementioned fighters couldn’t pull PPV buys.

by Norm78 on Jan 29, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

But the end result is that actually Zuffa is hurting themselves by not merging the WEC champions into the UFC. If they would have incorporated the bantam- and featherweights when they bought the WEC , then Faber would have been involved in 6 title fights over the last two years and Torres would been involved in five. Both of these fighters would have easily been huge stars in the UFC, headlining ppv cards drawing 500,000 + buys. Torres and Faber would have been a lot wealthier and Zuffa would have done a lot better putting on a Faber or Torres title fight than non-title main events Silva vs Evans, Belfort vs Franklin, Rampage vs Jardine, or Hughes vs Alves.

Although this makes even more of a case for merging the WEC into the UFC.

Hope they are happy

with 30-50k in PPV sales. I never even dream of buying that.

If the hardcores wont buy this because they feel they are being ripped off, and the casuals wont buy it because it doesn’t have UFC plastered all over it.. who do they think is going to pay that much?

by virginiatech on Jan 29, 2010 4:06 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Exactly.

Great post, you nailed it, this thing won’t do 100k buys. Hell, take UFC on Spike ratings for big big live shows, then take the WEC’s rating for their biggest live shows, and gague that vs the UFC’s biggest PPV numbers and you should pretty easily come up with a buy rate for this one. Actually, I suspect that buyrate will be a bit lower because many hardcores like myself will probably not buy this event in protest.

by JimJoe on Jan 29, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

As a very hardcore fan, I'm not buying this in protest.....

If they want to give Faber, Brown, Torres, Aldo, Bowles and the WEC stars the money they deserve (through shared PPV revenues) then they need to fold BW and FW into the UFC and make the WEC the “minor leages” that it’s destined to be.

My cable bill is out of control already with Showtime, DVR, HD service, 1 sometimes 2 PPVs a billing cycle and internet service. I’m not paying a 300 dollar a month cable bill just because the Zuffa wants to control MMA programing on the Versus network, which is the only reason the WEC exists.

Now that the UFC is on Versus, why bother with the WEC FW and BW divisions, time for a merger.

by szucconi on Jan 29, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions

I don't know

if I can justify paying $45 for this. I will be purchasing 3 PPV events in May, this won’t be one of them. I have been getting these fights free for years, and now I am expected to pay for the same fights? I think the WEC is one of the most exciting promotions on Earth but these fighters don’t have the exposure or press to carry a PPV card.

I was hoping WEC would become this generations “Friday Night Fights” and give us free MMA every week. Maybe Strikeforce can get the Challenger series on CBS so I can cancel Showtime.

by Riney on Jan 29, 2010 5:35 PM EST reply actions

...

It’s probably been said already…but a ppv featuring Aldo and the guy who lost to Mike Brown twice? and again as others have said i’m not sure i can buy this given the other events going down in may. Disappointing.

I guess one good thing is if this is successful guys like Aldo, Bowles, Brown, Torres and Faber will start getting bigger pay days..

by moreofmyself on Jan 29, 2010 5:58 PM EST reply actions

no way in hell am i paying that much for wec

If they charge 19.99 they will get twice the audience , and make the same amount of money , maybe more. And more people will be happy and get to watch the fight and u wouldnt hear too much bitching.
