Gilbert Yvel vs. Pat Barry Agreed for UFC 115

Wiu1ox_medium

According to the Las Vegas Sun, heavyweight strikers Gilbert Yvel and Pat Barry will lock horns at UFC 115:

Las Vegas-based heavyweight Gilbert Yvel (36-14-1) is close to signing a contract to fight Pat Barry (5-1) at UFC 115 in Vancouver in June.

Sources close to both camps told the Las Vegas Sun the two sides have agreed to the fight and should sign bout agreements soon.

You can bet your money that this won't be going to the ground when the two kickboxers face off. While his dangerous striking abilities helped Barry to win his last fight against fellow striker Antoni Hardonk, it didn't work out so well for Yvel as he got knocked out by Junior Dos Santos on his last fight. Nevertheless this should be a very entertaining matchup which should deliver some fireworks.

Rumored UFC 115 card so far:

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz
Rory Macdonald vs Carlos Condit
Gilbert Yvel vs Pat Barry

I’ll go way out on a limb here and predict that this one will be brief, but thoroughly entertaining…

I forecast an easy win for Barry.

Agreed, Yvel looked like crap against dos Santos. Can’t say the UFC isn’t trying to help him out with the matchmaking though, he’s faced two strikers in a row in a grappler heavy division.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Jan 29, 2010 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

They brought him in in order to put on some fun and entertaining fights. Whats the point of signing Gilbert Yvel to fight grapplers?

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

I can’t wait to see Pat Barry at the bank cashing his check.

of course

they’re more relevant at the moment… the winners will probably face off after, with the eventual winner of that senior circuit going back to LHW relevancy.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 29, 2010 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

The old guys may be more relevant these days, but Chuck-Tito is a still a WAAAAY bigger draw, especially for the casuals. Entourage Appearance > Cheesy Workout System Infomercial.

by Velcro on Jan 29, 2010 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe.

but I think Vivero and I were talking about what we prefer between the two personally, not the casuals.. but unlike other people hating on the chuck tito matchup, i’m also looking forward to that…

but hey, I look forward to a lot of fights, so I’m not sure if that means anything anymore. haha.

I imagine after this next season of TUF people will be wanting to see Chuck/Tito a lot more than they do now. It’s going to end up being big.

not sold by UFC 115 just yet

This card needs at least 2 more good fights, I do not see Tito vs Lidell selling by itself. I also see Yvel getting his termination papers by the end of the night.

it's farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr farrrrrrrr

from being finalized, so I suggest holding all the criticism until we get more than 3 fights rumored. :)

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 29, 2010 1:45 AM EST up reply actions

This card needs at least 7 more fights before

it even becomes a “card”, so perhaps you should reserve judgment.

Just my opinion, I was a big tito fan, but after the forrest fight, i felt robbed

by kchav21 on Jan 29, 2010 1:56 AM EST reply actions

Good fight. I have to go with Pat Barry to win this one. Yvel is actually a purple belt in BJJ and could conceivably win if he took this to the ground, but I know that won’t happen. I think that Yvel will make this a fight, but from what I have seen from Barry’s standup, I just see Barry winning the standup battle. If they give Yvel his walking papers if he loses, then I can see Yvel going to Strikeforce because they can always use more Heavyweights.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 29, 2010 4:13 AM EST reply actions

That would be a smart move for Yvel...

he would instantly get booked for a fight with Fedor and rise to #4 in the HW rankings.

Lonley

I think I am the only person that likes Yvel in this fight. Yeah, he got tooled by JDS but JDS is also one of the most dangerous strikers in the HW division.

Yvel is always dangerous ecspecially when hes fighting a guy with similar skills and he has a pretty big size advantage. Not quite sure who i will end up picking in this one yet though. Oh who am i kidding . . .

Heavy.com had a source

saying that Liddell-Ortiz will be moved to a Vegas event…either 114 in May, or a July event (probably 116).

by Scott Haber on Jan 29, 2010 10:36 AM EST reply actions

115 is before the TUF Finale even happens, so the latter sort of makes sense.

by kid_eh on Jan 29, 2010 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

Im excited for this fight, I’ve become a huge fan of Barry over his past fights and just hearing what he has gone through. A guy with such Cro Cop-esque leg kicks and heavy striker who always puts on an exciting fight
