2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Personality of the Year

After nine long seasons, the Ultimate Fighter was looking a little stale.  Yeah, the UFC revealed Roy Nelson as season 10's token ringer.  Yeah, Quinton and Rashad were coaching.  Yeah, we had a bunch of NFL washouts.  We still had nothing to really differentiate it from past seasons.

Enter Kimbo Slice.

Tell me you weren't more excited for TUF 10 with Kimbo involved and I'll call you a liar.  The Kimbomb sent shockwaves through the MMA blogosphere.  Worlds, as George Costanza would say, were colliding.

If you need any proof for Slice's merit for the award, I'll provide you with two numbers: 6.1 and 5.2 million.  That's the eyeballs Slice drew in his TUF fight with Nelson and his official UFC debut against Houston Alexander.  Ye. Gods.

Full results after the break.

Star-divide

1st 2nd 3rd Total
Kimbo Slice 13 12 6 107

Fedor Emelianenko 13 3 3 77

Brock Lesnar 3 4 2 29

Really suprised Fedor didnt win this. I think people might just be sick of hearing about him at this point.

I'm actually surprised Fedor

finished as high as he did. When I think of fighters with strong personalities, Fedor has never been the first to come to mind for me. Kimbo deserved this.

Maybe if Fedor had fought somebody worth a shit in the last few years.

To all…P-Dub and BJPennFan were just on here to troll this site and stir shit up. I’m not going to get into any more detail than that but please refrain from any further responses to their few pre-banning posts.

Sure seemed like it.

But they each made a nice foil for LOTR references.

I guess thats not how i interpreted the category. I thought they were using “personallity” to mean any person who is somehow involved in the sport and then judged based on who got the most attention outside of the cage this year. If you interpret it my way, Fedor is one of the leading candidates because his contract saga gripped mma news outlets for months.

I guess if you interpret it as who has the strongest personality, then i understand Kimbo winning.

by Rabbit915 on Jan 29, 2010 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

agreed. As far as personalities, Fedor has none.

Surprised

I though dana would have won. Like him or not, the guy knows how to put on a show.

Who votes for Coker as Personality of the Year? That has to be the worst vote out of any of these yearly awards. That guy is the MMA equivalent of Ben Stein.

Shit got real for cocker last year.

He got Fedor, moussassi , Mo… many of those guys we wanted in the UFC (you want MO stop lying to yourself!) made Gina/Cyborg happen, made the crossovers Dream/Strikeforce happen too, not bad.

I’m not denying what he did with Strikeforce, but this award was for “Personality of the Year”, not “Promoter of the Year”. I rarely see any Coker interviews, but, when he does give them, he never says anything groundbreaking or interesting.

Who votes for Dana White at this point. I don’t find his carnival barker act ammusing anymore.

I think Kimbo is deserving of it. I didn’t care for him at all before TUF but after a few shows I found him very ammusing and likeable

by KING FEDOR on Jan 29, 2010 12:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

someone send that list to mayhem

and let him know he can drop the goofy schtick now.

Really guys? Kimbo?

I’m not mad. I’m disappointed.

I don’t understand this. Kimbo has proven to have a personality that intrigues people.

BJ Penn's placement is totally a reflection of short memory.

Remember that Greasegate was this year. “To the death, Georges.” The NSAC appeals. Steroid allegations. Mocking Kenny. He cooled off a lot for the last fight, but the first 6-9 months of the year were all about BJ being an awesomely hate-able heel.

Also, I’m surprised nobody voted for Diego. He’s… he’s certainly got a personality.

I would have voted BJ’s mom 3rd place if I had internet connectivity when this was going on.

I would have voted BJ's mom all night long.

If you guys don’t see new posts from me for a week, tell the authorities to bring corpse-searching dogs to Hilo.

Que the enemy, inner me, monologue…

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

A lot of you need to figure out what TIME’s person of the year award is about. Hint: it’s not about charisma or likability.

The only criteria I listed for any award was this one. And I did it last year too. It’s in the vein of TIME’s award which is about the biggest newsmaker of the year (generally).

There’s a difference between “Person of the Year”, and “Personality of the Year”.

by WestbergIDFC on Jan 29, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

You might want to check the definition of “personality”. You might be pleasantly surprised to find it has more than one meaning.

Who the heck voted for Fedor as personality of the year?

Fedor is a monster, I admit, but c’mon. Guy has marginally more personality than Chuck.

Did somebody say "Eyeball Slice"?

There should totally be a fighter called ‘Chein Andalou’

I wasnt excited for Kimbo at TUF10 and I am not lying. I never really watch any season of TUF, i dont know, something about reality tv that makes me always ask why? Why do we have to have drama in the fighting business? Sure, they go thru this thru that but then again, everybody does. There is really nothing to watch in a reality tv show about fighters and a hyped up YouTube star. I just want to see them fight.

I am. I think. I will. - Ayn Rand
