Alistair Overeem Will Sign WIth the UFC "Right Away"... If the Terms Are Right:
"I'm not going to discuss the UFC too much with the media. But I will say that when they show me terms I like, I'll sign... Money is important but it isn't everything. There are some conditions they have that I don't like. But like I said, when the terms are right I will sign right away."

Hrm...
This will probably add to the speculation that Overeem really really doesn’t want to fight Fedor.
Probably wants to keep kickboxing, something the UFC wont be too keen on, especially with his track record with Strikeforce.
This
I think it’s pretty clear Alastair wants to be able to continue competing in K1, I don’t blame him. I’d love to see him in the UFC, but I don’t see how that happens until his K1 dreams come to an end.

Yeah
Overeem is sketchy, to say the least.

Seriously?
There are a million reasons for him to not want a UFC contract. Limitations on his kickboxing career, unable to fight in Japan where he’s best known, loss of image rights, certain clauses that allow the UFC to extend the time on a contract without guaranteed fights during that time…
Why does everybody just say “Oh yeah, he’s roiding!” and ignore everything else? It’s baseless, not funny as a joke, and totally unproductive to conversation.

Hm
I think you’re taking more liberties than he is, because he merely stated that Overeem is sketchy. He’s been away from Strikeforce for years, is under contract to them and is talking about signing with the UFC, etc, etc.. He’s just a little… eh… Eccentric?

I was meaning to carry forward from the root comment by J. B. and respond to both of them.
Look at how many recs he’s getting just for claiming “He hates drug testing, LOL!” There’s nothing productive about that, no valid input, and nothing relevant. We could discuss how there are legitimate reasons for top athletes to sign with promotions other than the UFC and come of the compromises that will likely be necessary to secure all of the top talent within the next 3ish years. Or we can give people a pat on the back for saying “HE GOT BIG SO HE TOTALLY DOES ROIDS ECHO CHAMBER” for the eleventy billionth time and ignore interesting topics.
I do agree that Overeem is… eccentric. But the frequency of steroid allegations about him drown substance out of any conversation that might involve him. It’s irritating.

It doesn't matter if it's productive.....
Busting people’s balls is funny. Especially on the Internet with other (MMA) nerds.
It's not busting balls or being funny.
This whole deal isn’t a joke or a discussion anymore. It’s like when a friend tells a good story and everyone laughs, then somebody else in the group repeats the punchline and looks around with a doofy grin on his face, expecting everyone to laugh along and think he’s funny too!
BE is a place to discuss MMA in a well moderated. intelligent climate and to make jokes as they present themselves. If you want to be unproductive and “bust balls” the whole time, do it on Sherdog.

I agree
The “horse meat” jokes were funny the first time. Maybe even a little bit the second time.
I get really tired, though, of not being able to read the comments section of any article which mentions Overeem without wading through pages of “LOL ’ROIDS” commentary.

Lesnar has been huge forever and gets accused of ‘roids all the time. Overeem got big quick and seems to go out of his way to not fight in the U.S. So I don’t think the ’roid comments are all that baseless.
"A champion is someone who gets up when he can't." - Jack Dempsey
Oh right.
He fights in Japan where he spent most of his career before, gets paid more, and is a bigger star. Claiming his fights in Japan as evidence that he juices is not only baseless, but poor logic. There’s just as much, if not more, reason to believe that he’s avoiding the US because he likes the ring instead of a cage. Or even that he doesn’t want to spend time adjusting the nuances of his striking to the cage when he still has major K1 fights coming up. Hell, he’s from Holland, kickboxing is a huge pastime there while MMA hardly gets any attention. Fighting in K1 and DREAM is in no way indicative of PED use.
The Lesnar comparison isn’t even close. Jemaledin and guys like that will bring it up, but he harangues everybody. We can, have, and will continue to have Lesnar discussions without it being derailed by steroid accusations. There is no way to do that with Overeem.
Hell, even Marquardt doesn’t catch shit like Alistair does. He grew from a slender lightweight to a HUGE middleweight, gaining around the same amount of weight on a smaller frame… and has actually tested fucking positive. But nobody ever mentions it. If you want a ’roids whipping boy, make it somebody who has actually been popped before. Josh Barnett is the current standard. Tim Sylvia, Nate Marquardt, Vitor Belfort, and Dennis Hallman have all tested positive. Jeff Monson has publicly admitted using. Randy Couture has admitted to using questionable medical supplements.
The whole conversation is stupid, which would be alright by itself. Sadly, it prevents intelligent conversation from taking it place.

Strikeforce should cut Overeem immediately. It’s just become a joke. It’s bad enough that Mousasi doesn’t care about his belt, but at least Mousasi fights.
Strikeforce is building some good momentum and this Overeem situation is getting more embarassing.
yes, they should cut Overeem cause he talked about the UFC.
they don’t need a legit challenger to Fedor anyway..

“It’s bad enough that Mousasi doesn’t care about his belt…”
He smashed Sobral’s head through the canvas – aside from that there’s King Moneyweight and then there’s Dan Henderson if he decides to move back up after he fights Shields. Strikeforce has no other LHWs in the top 25, let alone the top 10.
He’s champion of a division with only one other real contender. You can’t really fault his lack of enthusiasm, though at the same time I think that’s just part of his demeanor; look how completely disinterested he looked staring down Sobral before he went out there and clowned him.
I finish beers at 1:55.
Overeem is all about the money. Anybody who believes anything different is fooling themselves. If the UFC showed him enough money, K-1 fights would be a who cares in his mind.
I do not know what contracts Overeem is currently obligated to fulfill. Nor do I know the terms of them. If he is able to get out of them and sign with the UFC….. Strikeforce is screwed.
by Timmy B on Jan 28, 2010 1:28 PM EST reply actions 3 recs
I won’t say 100% of the time but almost every time someone makes a point to say it’s not about the money it’s about the money. So I agree with this. If the UFC offered him a contract that guaranteed him to make more money fighting 3 times a year in the UFC rather than 8 times everywhere else he would take it.
Now is he worth that to the UFC… I don’t know. Considering I believe his manager said recently in an interview he was making 400k to 500k a fight in K-1. Does that sound reasonable? If that’s right the UFC could promise him 3 fights a year with a PPV cut he would make up that money. Of course that is all predicated on him being free and clear of any other contracts before the UFC would sign him.
Just BE.

Did anyone notice the end of the article?
“(Fedor / Overeem) fight will not take place until late 2010 at the earliest, however, and Overeem will instead likely defend his Strikeforce heavyweight belt in April.”
Just more Overeem talk or real deal?
It's probably true..
on April it will be Fedor vs Werdum, and Coker said he would like Megareem to fight on April as well. I guess to do a boxing-esque, way to market the Fedor/Ubereem title fight…
The only question is, who does he defend his belt against?

Who would fight Overeem for the title?
Brett Rogers? Arlovski? This goes back to my prediction from a few days ago: they will try and get Werdum to fight Overeem in April. There is a precedence for it, Werdum and Overeem were supposed to fight in August. Where does that leave Fedor? Against Josh Barnett if he can get his CSAC troubles cleared next week.
I got no sources but run with it.
you are a fucking genius if this happened and ill only read your posts.

What conditions?
UFC WILL never allow him to do mma outside the UFC, like Dream.
And I dont think he is big enough, like Fedor, for them to say he can do K 1, They said Fedor could do sambo, but I dont think they would allow Overeem to do K 1, cause him getting knocked out in K 1 wouldnt look good for him fighting MMA in the UFC.
I think the reasons are more practical that than
Commissions won’t be as willing to clear him to fight if he just got knocked out in Japan.
Overeem’s somewhat flaky behaviour with Strikeforce is exactly why the UFC signs its fighters to such restrictive contracts. But man, Overeem in the UFC would be sweet – there are so many potential matchups right now that he could fight three or four times a year and not need to jet off to the city of Japan.
I finish beers at 1:55.
yes, and if they pay him enough,
he shouldn’t want/need to compete in K-1 anymore… I’m betting Dana and the UFC brass is hoping that Fedor loses to Ubereem, so they can pick him up after… or if Werdum magically wins, then they wouldn’t have to do anything.
by Anton Tabuena on Jan 28, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions
He wants the UFC to:
1. discontinue drug testing
2. allow him to immediately fight for the interim HW title…
3. …against CroCop
4. upon winning the belt, the UFC must agree to let him keep the belt and never have to return to fight again.
if the UFC agrees to these terms, he’d LOVE to sign.

“If I had it in my mind, like OK, I’m going to the UFC, then I would have gone. But I have a new contract with DREAM, so I’m planning to stay busy and fight in Strikeforce and Japan constantly.” – Gegard Mousasi
However, a well-placed source MMAjunkie.com spoke to Wednesday evening gave strong indications that Mousasi had been signed to a new long-term fight contract with the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion.

Seems logical enough
If I were Overeem, I’d be doing my best to stay away from Fedor as long as possible, until then he can still claim to be the SF Heavyweight.
first he got finish the k1 contract in march because he got one fight left on his k1 contract.. then once thats over he will probaly fight in strikeforce my guess in may against brett roger for the belt. because he has to defend that belt this year because scott coker already said if he doesnot defend that belt he will be stripped
K-1 Grand Prix
I can almost guarantee that he wants at least one more crack at the K-1 GP Championship, which means he won’t be in the UFC until 2011 at the earliest (as I don’t think they’ll make an exception like they would for Fedor and sambo).
Overeem’s stated goal is to be “a legend in K-1 and in MMA”, and I don’t think he will be giving up K-1 to go to the UFC until he’s got a GP title or has at least made another solid run at it.
