USAT/SBN January 2010 MMA Consensus Rankings

Rankings-button_medium_medium_medium

The first USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings of the new year are now live. Be sure and pick up a hard copy of USA TODAY tomorrow morning to see them in print.

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA sources to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

Admittedly, most of the divisions have been relatively quiet at the highest levels, due to the plague of locusts that befell the UFC in the Fall and Winter, but there's been some movement nonetheless. Check out the USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings to see who's rising and who's falling.

I still don’t like the fact that Mercer is ranked at all. Plus the guy he beat is two spots up.

It’s embarrassing to the sport.. Even more so that he moved up 3 spots since last time. What the hell.

Even if it wasn't Mercer,

you beat Tim Sylvia, you get ranked.. but yes, i do get your points.

….1 punch and you’re ranked 20th in the world? I guess Kimbo can’t be far behind, he beat Mercer by guillotine in an “exhibition”.

I was gonna put “1 lucky punch”, but it being ray mercer and with his boxing background, that wouldn’t be the case. I think his ranking would be more justified if we were able to see his fighting abilities displayed for more than 9 second, and not just 1 punch.

I don’t think most of these websites realize that Monson lost to Rizzo AGAIN recently.

Oh rankings. How silly you are, have been and always will be.

Jon Jones went up and Hamill down, good.

lol I like that George Sotiropoulos is ranked at welterweight but not at lightweight,

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Until Fight Magazine can satisfactorily explain why they continue to rank Semmy Schilt in the top 25 (currently ranked 14th), I think BE should seriously reconsider using them as a source for the meta-rankings. With Ray Mercer I can at least see why his ranking might make sense to a computer.

…and they don’t have Mamed Khalidov in top 100. BS

I just checked and it seems they use mixedmartialarts.com database, which is absolutely useless in terms of non-USA results. I think Fight magazine should be excluded from Consensus rankings.

No problem. It looks like mixedmartialarts database doesn’t have all Sengoku results from 2009. That’s why Kahlidov and probalby some other fighters are ranked so low at Fight magazine.

Weird that Santiago has somehow moved ahead of Khalidov in the MW consensus rankings, too.

sad to see Forrest move down a spot...

but I like that Gegard is moving up.

explain the rationale...

… for ranking A.Silva 3 spots behind F.Griffin in the LHW rankings. what, you think Griffin wasn’t embarrassed enough when they met in Philly?

subjectivity is one thing. ignorance of the sport is another.

by Adam Wagner on Jan 28, 2010 11:57 AM EST reply actions

The rationale is that not all sites will have silva ranked at lhw. And even if they did, 2 fights is going to make him a top 5 fighter?

Subjectivity is one thing. ignorance of how these rankings work is another.
