Rory MacDonald vs. Carlos Condit Planned For UFC 115
Former WEC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit (24-5), is in talks to take on King of the Cage star Rory MacDonald (10-0), at UFC 115 from the General Motors Place in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, on June 15.
MMAmania.com learned of the pending match up earlier today.
That is a huge leap for MacDonald who is one of the bright future stars in the promotion.
Condit had his hands full in the win over Jake Ellenberger, but he was also able to give Martin Kampmann all he could handle when they met at Fight Night 18. It also feels like a step back for Carlos as he was scheduled to fight Paul Daley but had to withdraw due to staph infection from a cut on his hand.
Rory MacDonald has a perfect 10-0 record with all ten wins coming by way of stoppage. His most recent win was a first round submission over Michael Guymon at Fight Night 20. This win would be by far the biggest of his young career and would announce Rory as a true force at 170 pounds.

Too much too soon for Rory
Even if he manages to win then he will be 20 and in the upper echelon of the toughest division in the UFC. This is all too soon for him. He needs more build up fights
Completely agree…working up to Condit would make sense by like fight 4 or 5 in the UFC but with safer fighters like Brad Blackburn/Rory Markham/Mike Pierce in the division, it would be a better idea to start with them.
If Rory happens to beat Condit then he’s going to have to fight someone like Kampman next. Just seems rushed for no reason really.

Mike Pierce is not a safe fight for anyone. His wrestling is awesome, he dominated Brock Larson, and he nearly beat Jon Fitch. I’d say he is just as tough a fight as Condit, and maybe tougher, depending on the wrestling ability of his opponent.

That’s probably true. But someone like Brian Foster or John Howard or Phil Baroni are still steps up…hell even someone like Dennis Hallman could work.

I think Rob Kimmons would be a perfect guy for him at this point

That’s the point I’m trying to make. He’s 20 and supposed to be the future of the WW division, why rush him into a fight with a boarderline top 10 (probably top 15) WW? Just seems dumb.

Probably to get a Canadian on the main card.

"Mike Pierce is not a safe fight for anyone."
Spot on dude. I agree fully. That dude is no joke.

This match-making doesn't make any sense to me
Condit was set to face a serious contender in Daley before the staph infection, and now he gets a (very) young prospect? And MacDonald? If he’s the next big thing…shouldn’t they be building him slowly?
With the lack of serious challengers for GSP at 170, I think they should be trying to build both of these guys on separate paths (although obviously Condit is a little farther along). Or perhaps they’re just assuming GSP will vacate if he beats Hardy and then the picture gets a little more interesting?
Also: Condit has only just returned to physical activity, let alone full-blown training. I know June is a long way off, but can they really be sure he won’t suffer any setbacks with his hand?
I like this fight
I think it will be a great fight for starters. Also, if McDonald wins, then he is an instant contender, which is what the welterweight division needs. If he loses, then he can be brought along more slowly like many of you have suggested. It’s not like getting a L on his record to Carlos Condit is gonna ruin his career or something. Besides, Condit looked like absolute crap against Ellenberger, and I’ve never thought of him as a world beater at welterweight. He has sub par wrestling, sub par striking, and good jiu jitsu. If Ellenberger hadn’t gassed he would have 2 losses in the UFC. I also remember him having an extremely difficult time with Miura in the WEC. Very winnable fight for McDonald.

I thought he looked awesome in the Kampmann fight. That was one of the fights of the year, and could have gone either way.

Exactly
Fightmetric said that was the only fight that was a draw both with the 10 point must system and with their total fight scoring system. Not that fightmetric is the end all scoring system, but that does indicate how amazingly close the fight was.
Jake rocked him with some hard shots, but he still found a way to win, so all told I’d say he’s doing pretty well.
Then again, he was the first fighter I ever considered one of my favorites, so I’m a bit biased.
He’s still ranked #9 in the USA Today/BE rankings. Like Chris Lytle, Marcus Davis…those make more sense. And those are fucking retarded.

I think Rory has a really good chance in this one.

I blog about stuff too.
I like the fight. MacDonald is 20. I don’t think he wanted to come to the UFC to play in the wading pool. If he wins then he gets someone like Kampmann. If he loses he is still just 20 and can drop down to fight Kimmons, Davis etc.
If he is the future would you rather him lose to a very good fighter or take a chance of him getting caught by Baroni?
I think this is a horrible matchup for Rory. A lot of people seem to be flying off the condit bandwagon because of the Jake fight. Maybe its just me, but I see Jake being a force in the divison in 2011. The kid has really good wrestling and has huge power. He might not ever win the title, but will knock off alot of the top 10 guys. So I think condit is still a top ten guy. Rory will be good, but this is too fast IMO.
Well said…Jake I could see turning into a Paulo Thiago. Never will win a title but will give everyone fits.

That's not quite fair...
Paulo’s only loss is to Jon Fitch, and it was a competitive fight. He’s also put on a lot of muscle and tightened his striking significantly in the last year. Combine that with his high end jiujitsu and tons of the intangible “knockout power” I think people need to hold off on judgement until after we see him against Swick. Which, by the way, has any other WW run the full AKA gauntlet? I think he might be the first to get all three.

This is going to be Condit’s biggest fight in the UFC, he needs a dominant Killer performance and he also needs to send a message that he’s got his stuff together.
I’ve made no secret to where I stand as a Condit backer, i’ve also made no secret that he simply hasn’t looked as prepared and focused since he left the WEC.
Condit needs to wake up and realise that right now he’s prime to be the next challenger to GSP but only if the NBK returns this aimless and directionless fighter he’s been the past few fights isn’t going to cut it.
Macdonald is made for him to be a showcase finish, if he doesn’t go out and make a statement then I have a feeling he’s going to go the way of Karo a guy with tons of talent that simply isn’t focused on doing what it takes to be the best.
