Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Forrest Griffin Agree to UFC 113 Showdown in Montreal

Two of the UFC's top light heavyweights will do battle in Montreal on May 8th when Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (18-3, 1-0 UFC), better known to fans as "Lil' Nog" and Forrest Griffin (17-6, 8-4 UFC) meet on the main card of UFC 113.  MMA Junkie confirms the initial report by Tatame:

The fight was first reported Tuesday by Tatame.com and subsequently confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) by sources close to the situation.

Verbal agreements are in place, and contracts are expected to be finalized shortly.

Griffin is coming off a close, but clear-cut decision over Tito Ortiz at UFC 106 while Nogueira made a statement in his UFC debut by knocking out the highly-touted Luiz Cane at the same event.

Brent Brookhouse opines on SBNation.com:

The impressive way that "lil Nog" blasted Luiz Cane really made a mark on a lot of people.  If he can touch Forrest Griffin's rather questionable chin with one of his hard left handed shots he could put himself directly into the title hunt.

When released the odds should lean fairly heavily in favor of the Brazilian given that his boxing technique is more refined than Forrest's and, while Griffin has very underrated jiu-jitsu skills, the Nogueira brothers possess some of the best skills on the ground of anyone in the MMA game.

Still, the skills and experience of Forrest should not be overlooked.  He was able to take a decision from 'Rampage' Jackson and displayed a very strong ability to stick to his gameplan and gain the title through a very blue collar performance.  Should he be able to avoid the power and work a patient game, maybe he can work his way to a three round decision.

Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione

Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens

Hell of a stacked card… This spring will be epic with the lineup of terrific cards the UFC is putting on. We should prob all thank Strikeforce for making UFC step up their game big time.

mitrione both denied and hinted

At the kimbo fight in separate interviews. It’s become pretty common in recent months for fighters to deny knowledge of a rumored bout only to have the UFC announce it weeks later.

It’s likely part of the UFC cracking down on fight news leaking before they announce it.

I think Forrest still has more to show. I wish he’d tighten up his boxing – his hands are STILL too slow, and he leaves himself open for bad counters – and I wish he’d work on his takedowns so we could see his BJJ top game. He strikes me as a guy who, blue collar reputation aside, has more talent than he has actually tapped. I’d actually like to see what would happen if he changed camps, maybe worked with AKA or ATT for a while.

so are people going to complain about better fighters being relegated to the undercard when the UFC inevitably puts Slice v. Mitrione on the main card? a la the Riggs/Heiron argument

Either on Spike or during the PPV.

And as already said, is there a #1 contender fight that’s been booted off the main card in favour of someone who really shouldn’t be there?

I’m surprised this is not the co-main event.

by DrTopo on Jan 26, 2010 3:46 PM EST reply actions

They need this fight for UFC 114 much worse, IMO.

113 already has a good main event in Kos-Daley, and those 2 will sell the hell out of that fight to determine the next shot at GSP.

Who will be left to help headline 114 with Rampage Rashad? Nearly all the other stars are already booked on cards from March-May 1, and can’t make the turnaround to fight on the UFC 114 Memorial Day weekend card.

You miss the point. The point isnt who is a great headliner. This card hasnt even had 1 match announced and your already declaring it a crap card. Wait until they announce the card and then if it sucks blast it.

Roy Nelson is not scheduled for anything him vs. Struve is rumored.

by bigdmmafan on Jan 26, 2010 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t miss the point at all, and haven’t declared it a crap card, so please refrain from putting words in my mouth. I was asking if this fight is on UFC 113, who does that leave available to co-headline UFC 114 later that month (a traditionally big show for the UFC). I am trying to figure out which matchups could be made given all the top talent scheduled heavily from March through this May 1 show. The UFC needing to make compelling Main and co-Main event fights is anything but a minor detail.

This entired card is "rumored". There’s a difference between rumors and fights that have been agreed to and reported by MMA sites, but not yet announced by the UFC. Struve vs. Nelson falls in the latter category.

by Scott Haber on Jan 26, 2010 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe it’s just me, but Kos/Daley didn’t look like it would help sell much more tickets. It’s appealing to hard core fans but not the casual ones.

Kos is pretty well known, and this is a #1 contender fight. Him and Daley are a perfect match to build up fan interest, as both guys have highlight KOs, and both will talk all kinds of trash to hype their bout. It’s a perfect contrast to the Shogun-Machida fight, where both guys will compliment their opponent and keep it respectful.

Let's not just blame the ACL

- Forrest was injured too and clowned Shogun
- Shogun had his chance at redemption by being given a man in his forties and took three rounds to put him away

His performances against Liddell and Machida have redeemed him in most peoples’ eyes (including my own), but let’s not just blame injuries for one spirited-yet-unsuccessful and one dreadful performance.

no, I mean it’s obvious that the guy that took on Forrest and Coleman was the same one that took on Chuck and Machida, injuries had nothing to do with his performances… you are right…

And you should watch that Forrest fight again, Shogun was not clowned by Forrest…

by Orcus on Jan 26, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

The fact you said Forrest clowned him means no-one gives a crap what your opinion of Shogun or Forrest is.

Try tearing your ACL and doing anything, let alone fighting in a cage. Then try doing it AGAIN and trying to get your gas tank back for your first fight upon return.

Fucking hell it really doesn’t pay to fight through anything anymore. Prepare for more 108’s where at the slightest sniff of an injury a fighter will withdraw since no-one cuts them any slack

to be frank, I don’t know much about ACLs or anything else for that matter, but playing without one and having one injured are two different things (even if I don’t really understand it that well). I can break or injure my index finger and not be able to type for a month or two until it heals, but if I have it cut off I can type just fine (or at least I’ve seen people with 9 fingers that can type faster than me :p).

I tore my ACL. If you are able to wear a heavy bulky brace on your knee to help with stability then you can play through it, Philip Rivers of the Chargers did it last year. Football and MMA are completely different.

hey man

Shogun lost fair and square, but injuries do play a factor, that’s all I’m saying. A shoulder injury and a knee injury I’d imagine are pretty different, for one you can’t work on your cardio with a knee injury but you can with a shoulder injury. come fight night the adrenaline takes over and from what I’ve read from interviews sometimes fighters can’t feel the injuries during a fight, but they’ll surely feel gassed if they’re not well trained. It does play a factor in the fight. Having said that, Shogun lost fair and square, I’m not debating that. I am however debating that it’s not a fight people should use as a reference to show how Forrest can be ‘dangerous’ given all the information we have today, it’s not an accurate estimation of Forrest as a fighter IMO, that’s all.

Wow, is this card absolutely sick.

Maybe the best stretch in UFC history.

Think about it, from mid March to mid May.

UFC primetime GSP/Hardy, UFC Versus card, UFC 111, UFC fight Night 21, TUF 11 debut and season, UFC 112, UFC 113. All in a two month stretch, probably the best stretch of cards in UFC history, 3 stacked cards in a row, with all 5 titles on the line possibly, the best free card on Versus and a great fight night with Florain/Gomi, TUF 11, UFC primetime.

Wow, this is why the UFC cant be touched. They got fucked with injuries, but now they are making up for it with the fans.

Imagine if this card still had Rampage/Rashad on it, if it wasnt moved to 114.

But I would not count out Griffin just yet. Little Nog has shown in the past that he can get starched quickly AND outhustled in a decision. And, at least Forrest has proven he can outhustle, and outlast some pretty good fighters.

The Tito fight was the best medicine that Forrest could take after his pathetic performance against Andy. He was able to get back his confidence and avenge a loss and get back in contention all in 1 fight. Lil’ Nog is a handfull for any LHW but he’s far from unbeatable, as long as Forrest doesn’t go chin first and uses smart strategy like he did against both Shogun and Page he can pull this off.

by Raker on Jan 27, 2010 1:31 AM EST reply actions

The main card and undercard bouts look to be very good. Even though this card lost Rampage vs Rashad, it may get a great bout in Griffin vs Rogerio Nogueira. The other thing that I like about this card is that a good amount of the fights on paper could go either way.
